41. HISTORY OF THE PALESTINE PROBLEM
One of the two States envisaged in the partition plan proclaimed its independence as israel and in the 1948 war expanded to occupy 77 per cent of the territory
http://www.un.org/Depts/dpa/ngo/history.html
The Palestine problem became an international issue towards the end of the First World War with the disintegration of the Turkish Ottoman Empire. Palestine was among the several former Ottoman Arab territories which were placed under the administration of Great Britain under the Mandates System adopted by the League of Nations pursuant to the League's Covenant (Article 22) . All but one of these Mandated Territories became fully independent States, as anticipated. The exception was Palestine where, instead of being limited to "the rendering of administrative assistance and advice" the Mandate had as a primary objective the implementation of the "Balfour Declaration" issued by the British Government in 1917, expressing support for "the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people". During the years of the Palestine Mandate, from 1922 to 1947, large-scale Jewish immigration from abroad, mainly from Eastern Europe took place, the numbers swelling in the 1930s with the notorious Nazi persecution of Jewish populations. Palestinian demands for independence and resistance to Jewish immigration led to a rebellion in 1937, followed by continuing terrorism and violence from both sides during and immediately after World War II. Great Britain tried to implement various formulas to bring independence to a land ravaged by violence. In 1947, Great Britain in frustration turned the problem over to the United Nations.

A Brief History [
Zim was incorporated in 1945 by the Jewish Agency, which held 44% of the shares, the Israel Labour Foundation (Histadrut) - 45%, and the Israel Maritime League - 11%. Several share realignments have since taken place. In 1947 the first Zim ship was purchased, in partnership with the London based "Harris & Dixon" company. The m/v "Kedah", a 'gallant ship' of long history, was refitted and renamed "Kedmah" - Hebrew for "Eastward". The main task of the early years was the carriage of hundreds of thousands of refugees and immigrants to Israel. The company acquired mainly old passenger vessels for this purpose -among them "Negbah", "Artza" and "Galila", and at the same time provided a vital cargo line to Israel during the War of Independence. In 1953 Zim began an era of expansion that would establish its global presence. In the framework of the German-Israeli reparation program Zim purchased 36 modern vessels and thus was able to dramatically develop its fleet and scope of activity. In the fifties and early sixties the company's most prominent activity was passenger liners . Zim offered service throughout the Mediterranean, to and from the United States and to the Caribbean during the winter.

According to an old story, the powerful Prussian King Frederick the Great had a chaplain who was a Bible-believer, though Frederick himself was a rationalist. One day, Frederick challenged his chaplain, "In a word, give me a good argument for the God of the Bible." His chaplain, a knowledgeable man, responded, "The Jew, your majesty!" To unpack the chaplain's concise remark is the purpose of this essay.
Neglected Evidence for the God of the Bible
The history of the Jews is a demonstration of God at work, sometimes miraculously, sometimes providentially, in the affairs of men and nations. The particular significance of the Jewsin contrast to other nationsis that God called Israel His special people and made covenants with them through Abraham, Moses, and David. In addition, the Old Testament predicts what God planned to do with His people. We'll look at three rather wide-ranging prophecies about the nation Israel and see how they have come to pass. These involve first, the covenant curses; second, an acted parable of the marital relations between God and Israel; and finally, a prediction of Israel's return to her own land. The first area of prophecy involves what God promised to do to the nation of Israel if they did not keep the laws Moses had given them from Mt. Sinai.

ISRAEL The first airplane to visit the Holy Land was a Bleriot XI, flown by the French aviator Jules Vedrines, who participated in a competition to fly from Paris to Cairo. He landed near Jaffa, on the Mediterranean coast, on December 27th, 1913 - at a time when Palestine was under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. Vedrines took off from Nancy in eastern France on November 20, 1913, and headed his Bleriot XI for central Europe, where his main stops were Prague, Vienna and Belgrade. His last stop in Europe was the Ottoman Empire capital Constantinople (today Istanbul in Turkey), after which he flew over Ottoman territory around the eastern Mediterranean, finally reaching Egypt via Beirut and Jaffa. A few days later, on December 31st, 1913, a second French airplane reached Palestine - a Nieuport flown by Mark Bornier and Joseph Bernie, which landed near Jerusalem. As Turkish pilots wanted also to prove their ability to perform long-distance flights, the "Cairo Expedition" was announced at the beginning of 1914. The aim was to complete a travel of about 2,370-km from Istanbul in Turkey to Alexandria in Egypt, through Lebanon, Syria and Palestine. Two airplanes - a Bleriot XI and a Deperdussin with Turkish pilots - took off on February 8th 1914 for the attempt. The Bleriot XI crashed near the Lake of Galilee and its two pilots were killed. The Deperdussin managed to reach Palestine and landed near Jaffa on March 9th, but when taking off to continue the journey, it crashed into the Mediterranean; one pilot drowned in the accident, while the other survived. Another Bleriot, named "Edremit" and flown by Salim and Kemal Bey, finally completed the "Cairo Expedition" successfully in mid-May 1914.

History of the Book
Writing this book was not easy. It required overcoming scholarly, legal and personal difficulties. Some had to do with access to sources, archival and human; some with breaking an Israeli code of silence concerning the discussion of nuclear weapons. The latter was more taxing than the former. I had to abandon acquired habits and practices, and distance myself from modes of thought and speech into which I have been socialized from childhood. Like other Israelis, I had internalized the norms governing the discourse on nuclear weapons, having learned that Israelis were not supposed to discuss their nation's nuclear weapons program. Israelis avoid uttering the words "nuclear weapons," using instead ambiguous phrases such as "nuclear option," and "nuclear capabilities," just as orthodox Jews would never utter God's Hebrew name, using all kinds of euphemisms instead. Over the years I have come to see these circumlocutions for what they were-burdensome and unnecessary rituals-but even to this day I still feel certain unease talking openly about Israel's nuclear arsenal. Ambivalence toward and inhibition regarding nuclear weapons are not an Israeli invention-they were part of the cultural legacy of the nuclear age since the Manhattan Project. In Israel, however, these attitudes have been manifested in the extreme. The code of silence over the nuclear issue is a testimony of what Israelis call kedushat habitachon-the sacredness of security.

49. Bible Basics - History Of Israel
Brief history of israel (BC). The nature of israel s history, is best understood in the Old Testament, in terms of the nature and purpose of israel s God.
http://netministries.org/Bbasics/BBHOI.htm
Brief History of Israel (BC)
The Bible is the primary source for knowledge about the ancient history of Israel. The history related, is the interpretation of historical events by members of a community of faith. In these biblical accounts, history and faith are intimately intertwined. Then, in about 630 BC, the Assyrians started to decline, and eventually the Babylonians took over the Assyrian capital of Ninevah. Meanwhile in Judah, now king Josiah began a series of reforms with the Assyrians out of the way to reestablish the worship of Yahweh, and throw out the Assyrian idols. But Egypt who had been watching this opportunity from the sideline, decided this was a good time to reassert Egyptian control. In 609 BC pharoah Neco marches toward Syria, and killed Josiah. One of Josiah's sons, Johoiakim, is put on the Jerusalem throne by Neco. Eventually however, the Babylonians (now under Nebuchadrezzar) defeat the Egyptian forces at Carchemish, and Neco is killed. The Babylonians, now unstopable, attack Jerusalem, and Jehoiakim was killed. Nebuchadrezzar ransacks Jerusalem and carries many priests, officers, and artisans back to Babylon to work for him. Zedekiah, the 3rd son of Josiah is made a puppet king in Jerusalem. After a time, Zedekiah rebelled, but Nebuchadrezzar retaliated with fury and Judah was burned. Jerusalem was under seige for 30 months and eventually fell. The Babylonians leveled the city, razed the temple, killed Zedekiah's sons, blinded him and dragged him off to Babylon in chains. Most of the population of Jerusalem was enslaved and carried off to Bablylon as well. This was the end of the 'kingdom of David'.

40 Significant Facts About Israel's History - Part 3
by Clarence H. Wagner,Jr.

In the Arab invasion of 1948 the Arab nations surrounding Israel sought to end all Jewish immigration and destroy the newly declared Jewish state of Israel. In my last Israel Teaching Letter, we explored the history of Israel and covered the period from the 19th century to the founding of the State of Israel in 1948. If you want to find the previous two issues which cover all of Israel's history from the time of Abraham, it is listed on the Teaching Letter page. Fact #30 The Arabs rejected the UN partition plan of 1947 and didn't accept their portion of land. Instead, five Arab armies (Egypt, Syria, Transjordan, Lebanon and Iraq) immediately invaded Israel expecting to sweep the Israelis into the sea. Fortunately, his words were not prophetic and Israel not only retained that which was given to her by the UN, but a bit more. Those areas designated for the Arab state in Palestine were occupied by other Arab countries: the West Bank (of the Jordan River) by Jordan, and the Gaza Strip by Egypt. After the establishment of the State of Israel, Jewish refugees of WWII and others from Moslem countries of the Middle East began to pour in. From 1948-1972, over 1,400,000 immigrants came into Israel. All had to be settled, trained, given Hebrew language classes, and many needed health care. All of this cost fell on the shoulders of the Israelis and the Jewish community worldwide.

40 Significant Facts About Israel's History - Part 2
by Clarence H. Wagner, Jr.

Yemin Moshe Today In my last Israel Teaching Letter, we began to explore the history of Israel and covered the period from Abraham to the 19th century. If you want to find the first part of this article it is listed on the Teaching Letter page. Fact #18 The 19th century saw signs of Western progress with European powers jockeying for position, often through missionary activities. British, American and French scholars launched studies of biblical geography and archaeology, consulates were opened in Jerusalem, steamships began to bring travelers and trade from Europe, postal and telegraphic connections were installed, and the first road was built connecting Jerusalem and Jaffa. The Land's rebirth, as the crossroads of three continents, was accelerated by the opening of the Suez Canal. (1) Of all the groups living in Jerusalem, since 1818 the Jewish population has been the religious majority. The first official census in 1844 confirms Jewish religious majority: 7,120 Jews, 5,760 Muslims, and 3,390 Christians. Up until 1860, everyone in Jerusalem lived inside the walls of the ancient city and the gates were secured at sunset each day. At this time, the population had grown to the point that there was no more room. The first Jewish suburb, Mishkenot Sha'ananim, was built near the Jaffa Gate outside the Old City walls in 1860 by Sir Moses Montefiore. Seven similar neighborhoods were also built outside the walls, e.g., Nahlat Shiva (1869), Mea Shearim (1873-75), and Yemin Moshe (1892), etc. These became the nucleus of the New City of Jerusalem. Some are the quaintest and most interesting neighborhoods of Jerusalem today.

For 2,000 years, Jews in the Diaspora dreamed of returning to Israel and creating a Jewish homeland. When Jews in British-controlled Palestine (known as "the Yishuv " of Eretz Yisrael ) were faced with starvation during World War I, the American Jewish community established JDC to provide immediate aid. From 1914 to 1948, JDC played a pivotal role in providing welfare and social services to Palestinian Jews and in laying the foundation of the State of Israel. Together we shared the dream of making Israel a just and caring society, a welcoming homeland, for Jews throughout the world. On May 14, 1948, Jews reclaimed their homeland and declared the independent State of Israel. One day later, Israel was fighting for its survival. When the war ended in 1949, the country desperately needed help. Hundreds of thousands of Holocaust survivors and Jews from across the Moslem world were arriving in Israel. Many were elderly or disabled. The young State of Israel was unable to provide care for them and turned to JDC for help. JDC immediately responded and established JDC-MALBEN, Israel’s first social service program for the aged and handicapped. JDC-MALBEN was funded and directed by JDC until the Israeli government was able to assume responsibility for its programs. Since then, we have worked in partnership with the Israeli government to help strengthen Israel’s capacity to meet the social service needs of its most vulnerable people.
