History

The number of Jews in Palestine is about 12,000.
The Zionist movement is started in Basel, Switzerland. Zionism's goal was to establish "for the Jewish people a home in Palestine secured by public law".
November 2: The Balfour declaration , a letter by the foreign secretary Arthur James Balfour to the English Zionist leader lord Rothschild, gives support to the Zionist case. The Jews organize their own social and political institutions, which exercise much control over their own population. Hebrew language is fostered, and the Hebrew University is founded in Jerusalem The League of Nations adopt the Balfour declaration, and leaves Britain in charge of Palestine, and in assisting the Jews in "reconstituting their national home in that country". Jews represent 11% of the population in Palestine with their 85,000, compared to the 670,000 Palestinians. Large influx of Jews, frightened by persecution in Germany. New towns and villages were created, hundreds of kibbutzes founded. 175,000 Jews and 860,000 Arabs live in Palestine (17%).

Israel History The Zionist movement, calling for an independent community for Jews in Palestine , began in the 19th century, and in 1917 Britain declared its support for the idea . In 1920 the League of Nations placed Palestine under British administration , and the British government was immediately faced with the rival claims of Jews who wished to settle there and the Arabs who opposed them. In 1937 Britain proposed separate Arab and Jewish communities ; this was accepted by the Jews but not by the Arabs, and fighting broke out between them.
Creation of Israel In 1947 the British plan for partition was supported by United Nations, and when Britain ended its Palestinian mandate 1948, an Israel was proclaimed , with David Ben-Gurion as prime minister. Neighbouring Arab states sent forces to crush Israel but failed, and when a cease-fire agreement was reached 1949, Israel controlled more land than had been originally allocated to it. The remaning of Palestine, known as the West Bank, was controled by Jordan, and Gaza Strip wa controled by Egypt.
The creation of Israel encouraged Jewish immigration on a large scale , about 2 million having arrived from all over the world by 1962 . Hundreds of thousands of Arab residents fled from Israel to neighbouring countries, such as Jordan and Lebanon. In 1964 a number of Palestinian Arabs in exile founded the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), aiming to overthrow Israel.

Independence
On 14 May 1948, Israel proclaimed its independence . Less than 24 hours later, the regular armies of Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq invaded the country, forcing Israel to defend the sovereignty it had regained in its ancestral homeland. In what became known as Israel's War of Independence , the newly formed, poorly equipped Israel Defense Forces (IDF) repulsed the invaders in fierce intermittent fighting, which lasted some 15 months and claimed over 6,000 Israeli lives (nearly one percent of the country's Jewish population at the time).
During the first months of 1949, direct negotiations were conducted under UN auspices between Israel and each of the invading countries (except Iraq which refused to negotiate with Israel), resulting in armistice agreements which reflected the situation at the end of the fighting. Accordingly, the coastal plain, Galilee and the entire Negev were within Israel's sovereignty, Judea and Samaria (the West Bank) came under Jordanian rule, the Gaza Strip came under Egyptian administration, and the city of Jerusalem was divided, with Jordan controlling the eastern part, including the Old City, and Israel the western sector.

While the modern-day State of Israel's history is relatively short, it is of such complexity that no two people are likely to see it in the same way. The following summary skims only the surface of issues that have made Israel the focus of intense international attention. The creation of Israel in 1948 was the result of a U.N. plan to partition the British protectorate in Palestine - what is now Israel was designated to be a predominantly Jewish state, and the remaining portion was to be an Arab nation. Many Arabs refused to accept the division, and armed conflicts occurred between Israel and its Arab neighbors in 1948 (War of Independence), 1956 (Sinai War), 1967 (Six-Day War), 1973 (Yom Kippur War) and 1982 (Lebanon War). As a result of the Six-Day War in 1967, Israel got control of territory on the West Bank of the Jordan River, which before the war was Jordanian territory. Israel also secured control over the Gaza Strip, a band of desert that once was administered by Egypt, and annexed the strategically important Golan Heights, which had been Syrian. These lands were collectively known as the Occupied Territories. Many Israelis argued that control of the areas was vital for their national survival, while Palestinians protested Israeli settlements and sought autonomy on the West Bank and in the Gaza Strip. Smoldering Palestinian resentment broke out in the

    THE HISTORY OF ISRAEL
T he birthplace of the Jewish people is the Land of Israel. There, a significant part of the nation's long history was enacted, of which the first thousand years are recorded in the Bible; there, its cultural, religious and national identity was formed; and there, its physical presence has been maintained unbroken through the centuries, even after the majority was forced into exile. During the long years of dispersion, the Jewish people did not sever or forget its bond with the Land. With the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Jewish independence, lost 2,000 years earlier, was renewed. A rchaeology : Archaeology in Israel has provided a valuable link between the country's present and past, with thousands of years of history unearthed at some 3,400 sites. Many finds attest to the long connection of the Jewish people with the Land of Israel, including Solomon's stables at Jezreel Valley, houses of the Israelite period in Jerusalem, ritual baths at Masada, numerous synagogues and the Dead Sea scrolls, containing earliest extant copy of the Book of Isaiah in still-readable Hebrew script. Excavations have also revealed vestiges of other civilizations which left their imprint on the Land over the centuries. All finds are recorded, and historical sites are carefully preserved and marked, for scholar and visitor alike. H ISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS : (BCE - Before the Common Era)

GE in Israel GE Israel History
GE established its presence in Israel in 1950 when General Engineers Ltd. was founded, making GE one of the first major U.S. corporations to operate in Israel. From then, and throughout the last five decades, GE's innovative products and services have been actively and successfully marketed in Israel via a network of distributors and direct operations. In the late 1990s, significant investments and acquisitions made GE an even stronger player within the country's rapidly developing high-tech industry.
GE Medical Systems in Israel currently employs over 350 people with global exports of over $100 million. This is the bedrock for GE Medical Systems' future growth in Israel.
GE Equity benefits from Israel's thriving high-tech industry. In 1998, it opened an office in Tel-Aviv and made its initial investment in the Giza Fund. Since then it continued to make many additional investments. GE Equity is very active in the private equity market in Israel.
GE Investments, the corporation's pension fund management, has holdings valued at more than $400 million both in public and private Israeli companies. This represents one of GE Investments' largest portfolio exposures to an emerging-market country.

Jews organized their first congregation in Jackson in , when there were only about a dozen Jewish families in town. The original founders of the Beth Israel congregation included H. Goodman, M. Adler, M. Ullman, Elias Bloom, and Isadore Strauss One of the first things the founders did was to establish a cemetery located along North State Street. In May of , the congregation purchased land for a synagogue at the corner of South State and South streets. Later that year, the congregation constructed a small wood frame building, which it used primarily as a schoolhouse (since Jackson had no public school system yet), though they also held religious services there. This was the first synagogue constructed in Mississippi . This building burned down in 1874, and it was replaced by a stone and brick synagogue.

    Rabbi Marc Kline
The History of Temple Adath Israel
On November 1, 1903, at 7:30 p.m., a handful of Jewish Lexington pioneers gathered in the Phoenix Lodge Room on West Short Street to discuss the possibilities of organizing a temple "...for the purpose of religious services, a Sabbath school and other matters pertaining to the moral elevation among the Jewish people of Lexington and Central Kentucky. The matter was heartily approved and on January 24, 1904, the first permanent officers were elected: Fred Lazarus, president; Simon Wolf, vice-president; I. Jay Miller, secretary; and William Moses, treasurer. Rabbi George Zepin delivered the first sermon. The following month, the services of Rabbi Leo Mannheimer of Chattanooga were engaged to conduct a monthly service and the group was granted membership in the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. At the April 8, 1904 meeting, it was announced that Samuel Goldenson had accepted this pulpit offered to him upon his graduation from the Hebrew Union College in June of that year. On July 11, 1904, the group formally incorporated under the laws of the Commonwealth of Kentucky as "Adath Israel Congregation" for the purpose of "...conducting and maintaining religious institutions and religious worship, teaching and training according to the customs of American Israelites.”
