IN-DEPTH SPECIAL:
Israeli elections JERUSALEM (CNN) Prime Minister-elect Ehud Barak wasn't talking Sunday, leaving Israeli politicians and pundits to speculate on the nature of the government he will form as he prepares to take the reins of the Jewish state from Benjamin Netanyahu One of Barak's early moves, one lawmaker close to the premier-elect said Sunday, would be a clean break from his predecessor reopening peace talks with Syria where they left off in 1996. Labor Party lawmaker Ephraim Sneh said Sunday that reopening the Syrian talks was key to fulfilling Barak's campaign pledge to withdraw Israeli troops from southern Lebanon within a year.

    FORWARD STAFF Despite angry denials by Israel and its American supporters, reports that Israel was conducting spying activities in the United States may have a grain of truth, the Forward has learned. However, far from pointing to Israeli spying against U.S. government and military facilities, as reported in Europe last week, the incidents in question appear to represent a case of Israelis in the United States spying on a common enemy, radical Islamic networks suspected of links to Middle East terrorism. In particular, a group of five Israelis arrested in New Jersey shortly after the September 11 attacks and held for more than two months was subjected to an unusual number of polygraph tests and interrogated by a series of government agencies including the FBI's counterintelligence division, which by some reports remains convinced that Israel was conducting an intelligence operation. The five Israelis worked for a moving company with few discernable assets that closed up shop immediately afterward and whose owner fled to Israel. Other allegations involved Israelis claiming to be art students who had backgrounds in signal interception and ordnance. (See related story, Page 8.)

    Israeli Government in Turmoil Over Sharon Gaza Pullout Plan
    THE SITUATION
    OFER SHELAH The plan, first disclosed Monday in an interview in the daily Ha'aretz, was far more detailed than any withdrawal plan Sharon has offered in the past. Indeed, politicians across the political spectrum were taking him seriously rather than dismissing his words as posturing or playing for time, as most have done up to now. As a turbulent political week drew to a close, Sharon's right-wing coalition partners were threatening to bolt the government, while the Labor party seemed all but ready to come in and replace them. Complicating Sharon's situation, opposition was growing among his close allies, including his foreign minister, Silvan Shalom, and his longtime friend Reuven Rivlin, speaker of the Knesset. The Israeli public, for its part, seemed firmly behind him. A poll in the daily Yediot Aharonot showed support for a Gaza withdrawal at 59%, with 34% opposed. As the first concrete step toward removing settlements from Israel's biblical heartland in 37 years of occupation, the plan appeared historic. Even the Palestinian prime minister, Ahmed Qurei, called it "good news," voicing hope that it would prove to be a first step toward more sweeping withdrawal.

    COMMUNIQUE: 20 January 2003
    Update: Canadian TV Journalist Urges Boycott of Israeli Government Event
    HonestReporting has been deluged with inquiries about Neil Macdonald and the controversy over the January 19 Israeli Government Press Office (GPO) reception which included a press conference with Prime Minister Sharon. HonestReporting presents here the facts, and leaves it to each reader's discretion to resolve whether Macdonald's actions crossed the bounds of acceptable journalistic conduct. The facts: (1) Macdonald, CBC's Mideast correspondent, sent an email to his colleagues in the Foreign Press Association (FPA) advising that "on an official level, let the FPA send a single representative to the reception. Meanwhile, I intend to be absent. And I urge my colleagues to find other work that day, too." The issue is not who germinated the idea. The issue is Macdonald instigating support for a boycott which is a documented fact. Macdonald's plan to send one person to an event, where 300 are expected, seems an attempt to publicly embarrass, if not the prime minister himself, then at least the event's sponsor the GPO, a branch within the prime minister's office.

    The Local Dimension in Israeli Government and Politics
    Local Government in Israel
    Daniel J. Elazar
    Local government plays an important role in Israeli society, particularly in connection with the following four tasks:
  • the provision and administration of governmental services;
  • the recruitment and advancement of political leadership;
  • the fostering of channels of political communication between the governors and the governed; and
  • the maintenance of necessary or desired diversity within a small country where there are heavy pressures toward homogeneity. All four of these tasks are of great importance in the integration of what is still a very new society of immigrants or the children of immigrants. The role played by local government in meeting the challenges they pose makes it a far more vital factor on the Israeli scene that it is often given credit for.
    Historical Manifestations of Territorial Democracy
    Territorial democracy has two faces. It can be used to secure political power or influence for specific communities which occupy specific territories or it can be used in a very neutral way to secure political power or influence for any groups which happen to be resident in a particular area at a particular time. What is common to both is the role of the territorial unit as the basis for organizing power.

    Government The Israelites were originally consisted of many tribes, each with its own leader or king. It was not until the Philistines first attacked that they decided to have a more organized form of government. There were three kings; Saul, David, and Solomon. Saul Saul was the first king of Israel. He was big, strong and handsome. He was from the centrally located tribe of Benjamin, so he was chosen easily. When he won a war with the Philistines, his position as king was strengthened. His death occurred during a war against the Philistines. His three sons had been killed, and he was wounded, so he committed suicide by falling upon his own sword. David When Saul died, he had no sons to give the kingdom to. So the Canaanites picked the most famous person in Canaan, David. He was famous because he slayed Goliath. David extended the kingdom when he took over the Philistines. He brought the people back to believing one God and only one God. Solomon Solomon was David's son. He was famous for building the first temple in Jerusalem. Solomon expanded the kingdom to make iron and copper mines. That helped the Israelites because trading routes across seas. The Canaanites were the first to use iron tools. He developed ships to make trading routes overseas,with that came high taxes.

    Chapter 5-1000 year reign of Jesus Christ
    or
    The Millenium The Bible talks of this period very clearly in Revelation 20. It is a 1000 year period after the 2nd coming of Christ to earth.
    It starts after the Antichrist, the False prophet and their armies have been destroyed. Also the devil or satan has been bound by an angel from heaven with a great chain and thrown into the bottomless pit and set a seal upon him that he be there for a thousand years. (Revelation 20:1,2,3)
    He will no longer have the power to deceive the nations until after the 1000 years when he will be loosed out of the pit for a short while. (Revelation 20:7)
    Satan then will again go out to deceive the nations of the earth and gather together men who dislike Christ's rule (during the Millennium). Then with a very large army Satan surrounds Jerusalem, but fire comes out of heaven devours them all. (Revelation 20:8,9)
    Satan is finally cast into the lake of fire where the beast (the Antichrist) and false prophet have already been thrown. There they will be tormented day and night for ever. (Revelation 20:10)
    The 1000 yr reign of Christ will be between the 2nd coming and the New Heaven and New Earth.
