A spokeswoman for the Finance Ministry, which oversees government purchases, said Tuesday that government agencies would use existing Microsoft Office products for the time being rather than upgrade to newer versions. The Israeli government also will encourage the development of lower-priced alternatives to Microsoft software in an effort to help expand computer use by the public.

Israel Blocks Palestinian ISP
By Noah Shachtman Also by this reporter Page 1 of 1
02:00 AM Jul. 16, 2002 PT For hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, getting to work, school or the market has been virtually impossible since Israel's latest anti-terror campaign began. Now, they won't be able to get online, either. Early Monday morning, Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) troops took over the offices of Palnet, the leading Palestinian Internet service provider, shutting down the firm's operations. The move part of Israel's 3-week-old "Operation Determined Path," which has kept seven of the eight major Palestinian cities under strict curfew reduced Internet access to a trickle in the West Bank and Gaza. Israel is a parliamentary democracy with legislative, executive and judicial branches. The head of the state is the president, whose duties are mostly ceremonial and formal; the office symbolizes the unity and sovereignty of the state. The Knesset, Israel's legislative authority, is a 120-member unicameral parliament which operates in plenary session and through 14 standing committees. Its members are elected every four years in universal nationwide elections. The Government (cabinet of ministers) is charged with administering internal and foreign affairs. It is headed by a prime minister and is collectively responsible to the Knesset. Israel Presidents Israel Prime Ministers

    To Shortman and Stein Johnbeck
(by the way, is that some stupid play on the name John Steinbeck - the author? - I hope not for his souls sake. The poor old b*st*rd would roll over in his grave if he read your words). I would respond with a detailed argument to rebutt your ridiculously stupid claims if I thought it might penetrate your dim intelligence and convince you to to take an objective look at the events in Israel. I am quite certain that even the most incisive argument could never achieve such a goal. Keep living your stupid lives, I am sure they are very pleasant. Ignorance as they say is bliss.

    39. The Electronic Intifada - Deconstructing The Israeli Ministry Of Foreign Affairs
Palestinian response to the sixteen official points raised by the government of israel in its position paper on the current crisis, with photographs, statistics, and supporting quotes and links.

Deconstructing the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs' publication:
The Current Situation in Israel - Answers to Frequently Asked Questions (Updated April 2001)

    The Electronic Intifada
    responds to the FAQ:
  • Who is responsible for the outbreak of violence?
  • Why is this violence occurring?
  • Are violence and peace talks compatible?
  • Is the IDF using excessive force in its response to the violence? ...
  • What about the outbreak of anti-Semitism worldwide?

Who is responsible for the outbreak of violence?
A simple, compelling and important truth has somehow been lost in the recent turmoil enveloping the Middle East.
The events recently witnessed in our region are the result of a clear Palestinian decision to pursue violence as a political tool.
While the Israeli government and people yearn for this violence to end, its does not appear that the Palestinians share this aspiration.
Israel seeks to resolve its differences with the Palestinians at the negotiating table, while Yasser Arafat and the Palestinian Authority have chosen ongoing, violent confrontation.
Yasser Arafat must be held accountable for the wave of violence sweeping through the territories.
