    Israel - Geography
Israel is located at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea. It is bounded on the north by Lebanon, on the northeast by Syria, on the east and southeast by Jordan, on the southwest by Egypt, and on the west by the Mediterranean Sea (see fig. 1). Before June 1967, the area composing Israel (resulting from the armistice lines of 1949 and 1950) was about 20,700 square kilometers, which included 445 square kilometers of inland water. Thus Israel was roughly the size of the state of New Jersey, stretching 424 kilometers from north to south. Its width ranged from 114 kilometers to, at its narrowest point, 10 kilometers. The area added to Israel after the June 1967 War, consisting of occupied territories (the West Banksee Glossaryand the Gaza Strip) and annexed territories (East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights) totaled an additional 7,477 square kilometers. The areas comprised the West Bank, 5,879 kilometers; the Gaza Strip, 378; East Jerusalem, 70; and the Golan Heights, 1,150.

Geography of Terrorism Afghanistan The U.S.S.R. invaded Afghanistan (1979-1989) to protect the civilian regime from overthrow by several militant mujahideen , supplied and supported by the U.S. over the Pakistani border. Political chaos followed the Soviet withdrawal and the fundamentalist Taliban eventually gained control. Only Pakistan Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirate have recognized the Taliban as the legal government of Afghanistan. Iran Known as Persia until 1935, Iran became an Islamic republic in 1979 when the U.S. under Carter withdrew support for the current shah Reza Pahlavi. Militant Iranian students seized the US Embassy in Tehran on November 4, 1979 and held it until January 20, 1981. Iran is currently ruled by a conservative clerical government that supports various terrorist groups. [LOC Country Study] Iraq Iraq gained its independence from Turkey in 1932. Since 1958 it has been controlled by the military, the latest being Saddam Hussein. Attempts at territorial expansion led to a costly war with Iran (1980-1988) and the Gulf War with the U.S when it seized Kuwait. It is now under U.N. sanctions which make it strongly anti-U.S. [LOC Country Study] Israel Following World War II, the British withdrew from Palestine and the U.N. partitioned it into Arab and Jewish sectors over vociferous objections by the Arabs. (From a report issued by the IDF Intelligence Branch - July 2003)
General Characteristics: The propaganda effort to delegitimize the State of Israel is clearly reflected in the maps of 'Palestine' and the accompanying geographical information that appear in the textbooks used in the Palestinian Authority (PA) education system. The ideological and political messages in the textbooks deny the existence of the State of Israel, repudiate the connection between the Jewish people and the land of Israel, and emphasize the Arab-Islamic character of "Palestine" - which is described solely as part of the Arab and Islamic world. This indoctrination of the younger generation begins at an early age, continuing until the completion of studies in institutes of higher education. The anti-Israeli political and ideological messages are promoted through a variety of methods and approaches. The study of geography constitutes a considerable instrument for the advancement of such messages. Following are the conclusions of a review of Palestinian textbooks for the school years 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 and of research conducted by the Government Coordinator of Activities in the Territories:
  • The State of Israel is totally ignored. This is seen through systematic omission of the name of Israel, replaced by "Palestine," which appears alongside the Arab countries of the region (Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Egypt).
