Survey Reveals Geographic Illiteracy Bijal P. Trivedi
National Geographic Today

See Survey Results and Test Yourself: Go>> In a nation called the world's superpower, only 17 percent of young adults in the United States could find Afghanistan on a map, according to a new worldwide survey released today. The young U.S. citizens received poor marks generally in geography. But then, as results showed, their counterparts in other countries were hardly star students.

The U.S. was next to last. "The survey demonstrates the geographic illiteracy of the United States," said Robert Pastor, professor of International Relations at American University, in Washington, D.C. "The results are particularly appalling in light of September 11, which traumatized America and revealed that our destiny is connected to the rest of the world." About 11 percent of young citizens of the U.S. couldn't even locate the U.S. on a map. geography of Water Resources. The Jordan River Valley stretches from Mount Hermon in the north to the Dead Sea in the south and includes israel, Jordan, Lebanon
    http://www.wws.princeton.edu/~wws401c/geography.html
Geography of Water Resources The Jordan River Valley stretches from Mount Hermon in the north to the Dead Sea in the south and includes Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. Eighty percent of the basin, however, is in Israel, Jordan, and the West Bank, which do not have other significant surface water sources, and have only limited groundwater sources. Jordan relies on the surface waters of the basin for 75% of its water needs, while Israel relies on the surface waters for only 30% of its water consumption because it has larger aquifers from which to draw water. Syria relies on the basin minimally, for the Euphrates River and other smaller basins fall within its borders. Israel and Palestine have an combined 1.4 BCM/yr of renewable water resources, with an additional 450 MCM/yr captured by Israeli water reuse and rainwater collection for a total of about 2 BCM/yr. Already a deficit of water exists between what is used and what is available in the environment. In 1994, Israel and the Palestinian territories used approximately 2.1 BCM of water. Map of the Regional Drainage Basins The Sea of Galilee is the principal aboveground storage reservoir in the basin with a surface area of 170 square kilometers and a volume of approximately 4000 MCM. Its water derives from three sources: the Hasbani, Dan and Banias River, which merge at a point six kilometers within Israel’s northern border. At present, the water level in the Sea of Galilee has fallen more than 213 meters below sea level and is now no more than 4 to 6 meters deep at any point. This low quantity of water threatens water quality, including the toxic algae and lowers the water pressure that keeps out the salt water springs flowing into the bottom of the lake.

    Geography
Ah, the Promised Land; land flowing with milk and honey; paradise on earth, with snow-crested mountains, verdant valleys, sweetwater lake, fast-flowing river and long, unspoiled coastline. Well, not quite. While it may certainly have been more like that in ancient history, the last 2000 years have seen the land of Israel denuded, with malarial swampland slithering down from the north and dusty desert creeping up from the south. The restored people of Israel have spent the last 125 years draining the swamps, pushing back the wilderness, planting and nurturing hundreds of new forests. What has not changed much is the lie of the land. The coastal plain that sweeps inland from the Mediterranean surrenders to gently sloping foothills and they, in turn, to the rocky peaks of Samaria and the smooth dome-topped hills of Judea. Together, the Samarian and Judean ridges create a mountainous spine that stretches from south of the Dead Sea up to the Jezreel Valley. These "mountains of Israel" as the Bible calls them, stand as a fortress wall keeping the country's enemies away from the coastal plain, where upwards of 80 percent of Israel's citizens live today. Further north, Lebanon's southern hills to the west and the Golan heights to the east form a cap around the top of the Galilee, with the Golan one of Israel's main water catchment areas, channeling the life-bringing liquid down to the Sea of Galilee.

    Israel's geography - an overview
By Susan Jones Although Israel is a tiny nation (approx. 150 X 50 miles, about the size of New Jersey) it has the world's fourth most powerful army, has the third largest press corps in the world, ranks third in the world in high tech industries, and ranks second in health care in the world. The Jerusalem Post, Israel's only daily newspaper in English, is ranked sixth in the world in circulation. The original promise of Genesis 15 is estimated to be a stretch of land about 300,000 square miles, about 12 times the size of Great Britain and Ireland today. This contrasts strongly with the borders of the modern State of Israel. Israel is a mountainous land. Running through the land is a deep gash in the earth, known as the Jordan Valley (north of the Dead Sea) and the Aravah Valley (south of the Dead Sea). They are the same valley and are part of the great Syrian-African Rift Valley. It extends over 4,000 miles from the mountains of Turkey, through Syria, Lebanon (the Beka'a Valley), Israel, the Red Sea, into Africa as far as Tanzania. At the Sea of Galilee, the Jordan Valley is 656 feet below sea level, and at the Dead Sea it drops to 1,312 feet below sea level - the lowest point on earth.

    The Golan Law

The area in the north which came under Israeli control as a result of the 1967 Six-Day War and is popularly referred to as the "Golan Heights," is actually composed of two geologically distinct areas (divided by Nahal Sa'ar): the Golan Heights proper (approx. 1.070 sq. km.) and the slopes of the Mt. Hermon range (approx. 100 sq. km.).
    GEOLOGY, GEOGRAPHY AND NATURAL HISTORY
While the Mt. Hermon range is mostly limestone, the Golan Heights proper is mostly basalt and other types of volcanic rock, forming a plateau that drops off to the west, to the Jordan River and Lake Kinneret (in the Syrian-African Rift Valley), and to the south, to the Yarmouk River. The plateau is crossed by a number of seasonal streams which run through valleys, sometimes very deep, and flow west into the Jordan or the Lake. The Golan proper may be divided into three regions: northern (between Nahals Sa'ar and Gilabon), central (between Nahals Gilabon and Dilayot), and southern (between Nahal Dilayot and the Yarmouk Valley). The northern Golan has double the average rainfall of the southern Golan, and often receives snow in the winter, as does the Mt. Hermon area. Hydrologically, nearly the entire Golan lies within the Lake Kinneret catchment basin, which supplies 30% of Israel's
