Last week, a Palestinian suicide bomber blew himself up on a Tel Aviv bus, propelling pounds of densely packed metal shrapnel into the vehicle's passengers. Five people were killed instantly, and 60 others wounded. The event presumably failed to darken the day of Ted Honderich, a Canadian-born philosopher who teaches at University College London. Last week, he told an audience in Toronto that Palestinians have a "moral right" to blow up Jews. And he encourages them to exercise it: "To claim a moral right on behalf of the Palestinians to their terrorism is to say that they are right to engage in it, that it is permissible if not obligatory." In Britain, where Honderich now lives, his theories have generated controversy. A disgusted Daily Telegraph reviewer called his new book, After the Terror, "one of the worst books I have ever read." But on his Canadian tour, Honderich was greeted warmly. Following his lecture at the University of Toronto, audience members lined up to respectfully parse the fine points of his philosophical theories. And since Honderich blames the West and Israel for what happened on Sept. 11, the CBC naturally regards him as star material. On Sept. 8, Michael Enright interviewed Honderich on national radio an opportunity Honderich used to repeat his claim that suicide bombings are a proper response to Israel's "rape" of Palestine.

Answer: Israelis are citizens of Israel. Jews may automatically become Israeli citizens under the terms of the Law of Return (as long as they have not renounced the Jewish faith), as may those associated with Jews, such as certain close family members. The Law of Return does not grant immediate citizenship to Jews who, sadly, practice other religions. In the case of people whose status as Jews is uncertain, Israel will still rescue them, especially if they risk being killed as a result of Jew-hatred. There have been efforts to amend the law of Return to exclude from automatic citizenship people whose conversions to Judaism would be unacceptable by Orthodox halachic standards. While this might only affect tens of people, it is an extremely sensitive issue. Subject: Question 14.2: What is Zion? Answer: Zion is a hill in Jerusalem, and one of the names by which Jews have always referred to their homeland, the Land of Israel (Eretz Israel). The name 'Zion' is used in Tanakh both for the land of Israel and for its national and spiritual capital, Jerusalem. Zion (Pronounced 'tsee-yohn' in Hebrew) has had a continuous Jewish population for thousands of years. For many centuries the majority of the Jewish people have lived dispersed in countries all over the world. Yet, powerful national-spiritual bondsexpressed mainly in liturgy and literaturehave constantly linked these Jewish communities with their ancestral homeland. After centuries of decline and neglect under foreign occupation, Zion is flourishing once again, with the large increase in its Jewish population over the past 100 years, and the restoration of its political independence in 1948.

Coffee In Israel
by Myron Joshua Print Friendly Version Email This Article In a recent article in the Jerusalem Post, the Israeli English Language daily, Herb Keinon writes about "Culture in a Cup", the growth of coffee shop culture in Israel during the past five years. During the 1940's and 50's, Israel (a young country now only 52 years old) used to have coffee shops that had a thriving business selling...soda water (flavored and unflavored). That's what people could afford when they were looking for a quiet spot to sit and talk with friends, or argue ideology (a great pastime amongst the ideologues and writers of this new immigrant society.) Coffee was rare in the country that had to ration food during difficult war times and had to invest in the very basics to absorb immigrants and post WWII refugees. Ironically, it may have been the harsh times and required military service (including reserve duty of one or two months a year for all adult males through the age of 50) that laid the cornerstone for a now striving coffee culture that includes espresso bars, outdoor cafes throughout the country. In a recently published Coffee Table book about coffee itself, author Matam Shiram writes about the ritual of coffee preparation in the Israeli army: "Coffee in the reserves is our exclusive invention. It is an Israeli institution that is difficult to describe...You have to imagine the dunes and the beating sun (or conversely the pouring rain), the sweaty uniforms, the smell of oil on the tank... And it is especially necessary to imagine the smell of the coffee cooking in the finjan...

Dove Hunting Bill Advances to Michigan Governor By Susan Jones CNSNews.com Morning Editor June 09, 2004 (CNSNews.com) - It's the hunters versus the Humane Society in Michigan, where the State Legislature has passed a bill that would allow dove hunting in Michigan for the first time in 99 years. The bill authorizes the state's Natural Resources Commission to set the rules for hunting mourning doves. The Humane Society of the United States, The Fund for Animals, The Songbird Protection Coalition and other like-minded groups are urging Gov. Jennifer Granholm, a Democrat, to "keep her word" and veto the bill.

Israel The Yarmukian Culture is one out of several Pottery Neolithic units which flourished in the Southern Levant in the 6th millennium B.C. The other cultures are the Jericho IX unit commonly named Pottery Neolithic A, the Southern Coastal plain unit, and the Desert Societies (see Fig. 1). Various suggestions were raised over the years concerning these culturals units and especially their chronological relations one to the other, but none has gained any scholarly concensus(1). In this article we will concentrate on the most well defined unit which is the Yarmukian Culture. The following aspects will be presented: history of research, sites description, stratigraphy and geographical distribution, pottery, the flint industry, stone tools, art objects, burial customs, the ecomony, the architecture and settlement pattern, long distance trade, and chronology. Olive Culture in Ancient Israel
by David Eitam
David Eitam is an archeologist who specialized in ancient industries of the Holy Land. Four years ago he founded “More Netofa”, a private company that produces gourmet olive oil, honey and spice mixtures, using ancient recipes and modern methods. He also conducts workshops about olive oil, at his home, in Hararit in the Galilee (see related article). The olive tree and its oil have been major components in the culture and rituals of Ancient Israel and the economy of its inhabitants throughout history. Its prominent status is revealed by numerous verses in the Old Testament, the Mishnah and the Talmud.

Jews in Ethiopia were separated from the Christian and Moslem communities by their distinct way of life and religious customs.
The majority of Ethiopian Jews were farmers, but a smaller portion were traditional craftsmen, working as tinsmiths and tailors.
Overall the community had very little contact with other ethnic communities and developed a very rich culture in isolation. Jews in Ethiopia lived in huts and their villages were built near rivers and streams in the mountainous regions of Ethiopia. Besides the economic benefits of living near the water, there was the importance of flowing waters in the rituals of purification and cleanliness practiced by the community. The Ethiopian Jews maintained a strict biblical code of purity surrounding menstruation, birth, death and preparation for the Sabbath. Fresh running water was therefore essential to the community's way of life and spiritual health. The Kessim ("Kohanim") were the top religious and spiritual leaders of the Jewish community. Members of the community came to the Kessim for information related to religion, holidays, wedding ceremonies, divorce proceedings, burials, etc.
