Culture
Until recently, Israel's culture has been predominantly religious, be it Jewish, Christian or Muslim. Although the scoutlike kibbutz feeling is still in evidence, and although Judaism is the state religion, Israel is rapidly turning into a cosmopolitan consumerist society. Most Jewish Israelis play it both ways, leading a largely secular life but still taking part in the occasional religious ceremony. This is not to say that orthodoxy has died out: on the contrary, orthodox factions are becoming stronger and stronger, and their calls for a return to religion are louder and louder. Many Orthodox - and particularly Hasidic - Jews are recognisable by their dark clothes, beards and curly sideburns (although women tend to forego the beards and sideburns). In Palestinian parts of the country, Muslim culture is more evident: you'll generally see fewer women, and those that you do see will be dressed more modestly. Sunni is the predominant Muslim sect. Family and hospitality are very important in Palestinian life, and most Palestinians are extremely friendly and helpful to strangers, going so far as to welcome them into their homes. Israel is renowned for its classical music, with artists such as violinist Yitzhak Perlman strutting the world stage. Klezmer, the knees-up violin-based Yiddish folk music, is hugely popular in Israel and has spread its tentacles to Jewish communities around the world. The founders of the Zionist movement were writers, and literature is still strongly supported in Israel - successful exports have included Amos Oz and David Grossman. The Palestinian community also has a strong literary tradition, born out of adversity and struggle - poetry is particularly popular. In their passion to impose a Jewish identity on their new homeland, the new Israelis took to architecture with a passion, resulting in the form-over-function Internationalist style as well as the spread of Bauhaus buildings. Few Islamic buildings have survived into the 20th century, but there is some beautiful Mamluk architecture in Old Jerusalem.

Dissecting the Disengagement Defeat
Thousands of Likud voters recently opposed Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s plan for an Israeli "disengagement" from the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and Samaria. Understandably, the forcible uprooting and transfer of a long-established Jewish population is a notion that drew fierce opposition not only from those citizens who were to be personally affected, but also from the wider Israeli population of Likud voters.

The objectors do not want to serve in the West Bank
By BBC News Online's Kathryn Westcott The refusal of some 50 reserve officers of the Israeli Defence Forces to serve in the occupied territories of the West Bank and Gaza strip strikes at the heart of the notion of Israeli citizenship For much of Israel's history, serving in the reserves for a few weeks a year until well into middle age - a legal requirement - was regarded as an honour.
This is the tip of the iceberg. The army's reaction is one of panic
Ishai Menuvhin, There's a limit! With a small population, the only way Israel can maintain an army of sufficient size to protect its borders is through reservists. Conscientious objection is not new. Many reservists refused to take part in Israel's occupation of Lebanon and to serve in the occupied territories during the previous Palestinian uprising. But what makes this case so unusual is that so many combat reservists, soldiers and officers have come forward publicly at one time.

Everyone has their own perception of what Israel and the Palestinian Territories are about: it’s a travel agency package of beaches and sun; it’s the Promised Land of the Jews; it’s a ticking time bomb; it’s the birthplace of Christ. And while it is all of these things, it's much more besides. Israel is a bustling, noisy, modern country. It’s best not to arrive with preconceptions of spiritual epiphany. If you do, you'll almost certainly have them confirmed, but in doing so you run the risk of missing the best that this fascinating country has to offer. If you want to understand Israel, take time to visit the new, cosmopolitan city of Tel Aviv, dive the Red Sea at Eilat, explore some of the country's thriving national parks and float for hours in the salty stillness of the Dead Sea. Look beyond the larger-than-life figures of the past and have a chat to your bus driver or hostel owner.
Warning
Despite ongoing efforts by various world leaders, the situation in Israel and the Palestinian Territories remains volatile and, in many parts, dangerous. In particular, the West Bank and Gaza Strip are unsafe and should be considered off-limits. The threat of Palestinian suicide bombings and retaliatory strikes by Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) mean personal security situation in Israel is not reliable or predictable. Violence can occur without warning, even during 'cease fires'. While this cycle continues, travel to this region is not encouraged. Prospective travellers are advised to check consular travel advice.

Four thousand years of Jewish heritage, a century of political Zionism and five decades of modern statehood have contributed to the development of an Israeli culture which reflects worldwide elements while striving for an authentic identity of its own. Cultural expression through the arts in Israel is as varied as the people themselves, with activities for every taste, offering professional talent of international standard alongside a wealth of opportunities for aspiring artists and amateurs. PEOPLE OF THE BOOK. Basic to the development of literature in the country is the century-long revival of Hebrew, both for everyday use and as an expressive literary language. Authors and poets deal extensively with local images and events as well as with universal themes, reflecting the changing nature of the country's concerns and the development of its complex, multilayered society. Some 2,500 titles are published annually, which, in addition to republications of classics and imported books, may be found in the many bookshops of every town and city. About 1,000 libraries provide reference and lending facilities, including several bookmobiles serving outlying districts. The biennial International Book Fair draws thousands of visitors to Jerusalem, and every spring Hebrew Book Week turns city squares and parks into crowded book markets.

Antigypsyism in the Political Culture of the Federal Republic of Germany:A Parallel with Antisemitism?
by Gilad Margalit
Abstract
This article analyses the recent wave of ethnic hatred directed against Romanies (Gypsies), in the political culture of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). This ethnic hatred is designated here as antigypsyism. Differences and similarities between contemporary antigypsyism, antisemitism, and xenophobia will be discussed, with a preliminary survey of antigypsy patterns, and its various manifestations since 1945. Antigypsyism in the political culture of the FRG was mitigated under the influence of the Allies' reeducation policy during their occupation of Germany, just as revelations of antisemitism had been. This enlightened trend progressively gained power in the FRG after 1945. Nevertheless, hostile assertions and actions directed towards Romanies, as well as statements indicating implicit and explicit "understanding" of the motivation for their persecution under the Nazis were observed. Such statements were found not just among extreme Right groups, or in the private sphere (as was also largely the case with postwar antisemitism), but prevailed on the fringes of mainstream circles as well, at least during the 1950s. Antigypsyism played only a marginal role in the political agenda of the contemporary German extreme Right. It is certainly not comparable in its depth or dimensions to the central and profound role played by antisemitism in the German extreme Right Weltanschauung. Nevertheless, traditional antigypsyism, and especially the Nazi persecution of the Romanies, gave this ethnic hatred a unique character different from general xenophobic feelings. Antigypsyism has borrowed traditional as well as post-Holocaust antisemitic patterns, and, surprisingly, even has a certain amount of antisemitic content. Like antisemitism, antigypsyism was delegitimized in the political culture of the FRG, and contemporary public appearances are restricted to extreme Right circles.

Ariel Natan Pasko Reforming Israel's Culture of Corruption By Ariel Natan Pasko Jan 4, 2004 The daily newspaper headlines ring out, "Sharon Get's Questionable Loan." Israeli television news tells us, "Former Prime Minister Barak Investigated For Phony Organizations." The radio blasts, "Knesset Members Accused Of Double Voting." Israeli Internet sites let us know that, "Former Knesset Member investigated for bribery during primaries." Well they're politicians, so what do you expect? Then every so often the Central Bureau of Statistics reminds us that the heads of companies in Israel - including state owned companies - are making gosh awful lots of money. But who cares?

Ariel Natan Pasko The Cultural Elites in Israel Are Sick By Ariel Natan Pasko May 10, 2004 True, cultural elites in most western countries today are anti-nationalist, anti-traditional, and tend toward degrading whatever general society holds in esteem, but it still hurts me to see this degenerate phenomenon in Israel. After recently awarding the prestigious 2004 Israel Prize to the Judeo-pathic Israeli artist Yigal Tumarkin; now the Israeli "guardians of culture" have decided to honor Israeli pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim, with the 2004 Wolf Prize, even though he is an admirer of Nazi Germany's favorite musician. Barenboim is currently the musical director of the State Opera House in Berlin and of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and an inveterate Wagner perpetrator. Once, art, music and literature, were produced in Israel to build up national identity in the fledgling Jewish State. Jews were returning home after nearly 2,000 years of abusive exile, and they wanted to reconstitute their own independent national - Hebrew - culture. Though sometimes at odds with the traditional Jewish religious establishment, the New Hebrew - "Israeli" - culture drew heavily from Jewish, and especially biblical sources. But today, the cultural elites in Israel have spurned "Jewishness" for a more secular global identity. They've even become self-hating.

Culture Most of the Israelites' culture was based on their religion, Judaism. The only thing the Israelites did for fun was they danced and played music. Ekron This is a pot and dome from a shrine in Canaan. This is a statue of a god during the time of the Israelites. In Ancient Israel the arts were either religious or made to help their daily life. Most of their music was also religious. The Israelites are known for their creative dancing, though. They danced when they won wars, and at most religious ceremonies. Agricultural Holidays There are two main agricultural holidays: Passover and Shavuot. In Passover the Israelites could not eat anything that had flour in it. The Israelites had no time to let the bread rise so they had to eat 'Matza'. Matza is bread without yeast, which means it is flat bread. Shavout is based on the first fruit of the seven species: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, olives, and dates. Museum Lobby Africa China India ...
