CULTURE of ISRAEL
I srael is a young country, small in size, but with a widely varied landscape and a culturally active, heterogeneous population of justover 5 million. It is a place where East meets West; where past and present touch; and where ideologies mold lifestyles. Four thousand years of Jewish heritage and over four decades of modern statehood have contributed to an Israeli culture which strives to create an identity of its own, while preserving the uniqueness of each contributing community. Emerging from the encounter between the individuals and the society, it blends tradition and innovation, steers a course between Israeli particularism and universal elements, and grows from a conflict between artistic freedom and the need to cater to public tastes. A n immigrant society, its creative expression has absorbed many different cultural and social influences, as the traditions of each group not only contend with those of other groups, but also confront the country's recent history and life in a Middle Eastern context. The ongoing search for cultural identity is expressed through dynamic creativity in a broad range of art forms, appreciated and enjoyed by a great many people, not as an elitist activity but as part of daily life. I srael's international cultural ties focus on cooperation in a broad range of fields, including language, literature, the arts, science, media and sports. Based on official two-way agreements with some 45 countries, in addition to links with many others, activities range from student and academic exchange programs and reciprocal tours by dance troupes, theater companies, art exhibits, musicians and orchestras, to participation in book fairs, film festivals and sports competitions and the teaching of the language and cultural traditions of both countries.

    Israel History
While the modern-day State of Israel's history is relatively short, it is of such complexity that no two people are likely to see it in the same way. The following summary skims only the surface of issues that have made Israel the focus of intense international attention. The creation of Israel in 1948 was the result of a U.N. plan to partition the British protectorate in Palestine - what is now Israel was designated to be a predominantly Jewish state, and the remaining portion was to be an Arab nation. Many Arabs refused to accept the division, and armed conflicts occurred between Israel and its Arab neighbors in 1948 (War of Independence), 1956 (Sinai War), 1967 (Six-Day War), 1973 (Yom Kippur War) and 1982 (Lebanon War). As a result of the Six-Day War in 1967, Israel got control of territory on the West Bank of the Jordan River, which before the war was Jordanian territory. Israel also secured control over the Gaza Strip, a band of desert that once was administered by Egypt, and annexed the strategically important Golan Heights, which had been Syrian. These lands were collectively known as the Occupied Territories. Many Israelis argued that control of the areas was vital for their national survival, while Palestinians protested Israeli settlements and sought autonomy on the West Bank and in the Gaza Strip. Smoldering Palestinian resentment broke out in the

Israel Culture Week brings Dr. Ruth
By Nicol Jenkins Published: Monday, March 29, 2004 What do Hookah Night and sex therapist Dr. Ruth Westheimer have in common with UCF? They are all part of UCF's Israel Culture Week beginning today. This fun-filled week is sponsored by Hillel@UCF, the Jewish student group on campus, Central Florida Hillel, Knights for Israel and the Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity.
Benjamin Sack, president of Hillel@UCF and member of the Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity, aims to bring a taste of Israel's culture to UCF. "I would like to show students that there is more to Israel than the conflict shown in the news," Sack said.
In Israel Culture Week's main event, sex therapist Dr. Ruth Westheimer will speak to UCF students on the culture of Israel at 1:30 p.m. on Friday in Business Administration Room 119. Dr. Ruth is a Holocaust survivor and fought in the Israel War of Independence.
The week is planned to recreate Israeli traditions and customs. Events begin at 8 p.m. today with Hookah Night at Pegasus Landing. There will be baklava, coffee and a hookah, which is a Middle Eastern water pipe in which you smoke flavored tobacco. At 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in the Student Union Room 316B, The Hitchhikers will be shown in Hebrew with English subtitles. Other events include Comedian Dan Ahdoot performing at 8 p.m on Wednesday at Wackadoo's patio and Bedouin Night on Thursday at Camp Shalom in Ocala. Bedouin offers an Israeli-style barbecue, music and entertainment. At 7:30 p.m. Friday, there will be a traditional Israeli dinner in Live Oak Room A, near the Marketplace cafeteria.

"Israel is very "civilized" within the framework of a struggling and pressurized Middle Eastern nation that strives very hard to be "Western."
Israelis have perceptions of time, space and values that are completely different from those of North Americans. Israelis see Americans as artificial and square, when they are actually just showing respect. Americans think Israelis are arrogant, rude and pushy, when in realilty they are being direct and honest. Israel is a very small country whose population is one big family. In a family people can be as direct and honest as they want. Culture of Israel
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Israeli culture is inseparable from the Jewish culture which preceded it (i.e. dated earlier than the Israeli Declaration of Independence , in May 14 ). However, this article concerns only the cultural aspects of the modern Israeli state. With a population drawn from more than 100 countries on 5 continents, Israeli society is rich in cultural diversity and artistic creativity. The arts are actively encouraged and supported by the government. The Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra performs throughout the country and frequently tours abroad. The Jerusalem Symphony, the orchestra of the Israeli Broadcasting Authority, also tours frequently as do other musical ensembles. Almost every municipality has a chamber orchestra or ensemble, many boasting the talents of gifted performers recently arrived from the countries of the former Soviet Union. Folk dancing, which draws upon the cultural heritage of many immigrant groups, is very popular. Israel also has several professional ballet and modern dance companies. There is great public interest in the theater; the repertoire covers the entire range of classical and contemporary drama in translation, as well as plays by Israeli authors. Of the three major repertory companies, the most famous, Habimah, was founded in 1917. Active artist colonies thrive in Safed, Jaffa, and Ein Hod, and Israeli painters and sculptors exhibit and sell their works worldwide. Haifa, Tel Aviv, and Jerusalem have excellent art museums, and many towns and kibbutzim have smaller high-quality museums. The Israel Museum in Jerusalem houses the Dead Sea Scrolls along with an extensive collection of Jewish religious and folk art. The Museum of the Diaspora is located on the campus of Tel Aviv University. Israelis are avid newspaper readers. Israeli papers have an average daily circulation of 600,000 copies. Major daily papers are in Hebrew; others are in Arabic, English, French, Polish, Yiddish, Russian, Hungarian, and German.

The modern Hebrew poetry of the first two or three decades is considered by many to be among the most remarkable achievements of Israeli culture, especially the poetry of the 1950's and 1960's, which introduced modern Hebrew poetry, as opposed to the more conservative poetry written before, such as that of Natan Alterman, Abraham Shlonsky and Leah Goldberg . Critics generally agree that the three main figures in the modern poetry of the first decades ("Dor-Hamedina" - Hebrew for "The State Generation") were Yehudah Amichai, Nathan Zach, Naomi Shemer and David Avidan Israeli writers such as A.B.
