Welcome to dankarran.com , the personal website of Dan Karran . Dan is a university student originally from the Isle of Man, studying for a degree in Computing and Geography at university in Manchester. Last year he was doing a 'year in industry' as part of his course, working as a web developer at Reuters in London. That's the intro out of the way, so please feel free to use the links on the left to find out more about me and what I like doing, and don't forget to sign my guestbook when you get a chance. The largest part of this site by far is my photo galleries section, with photos from around the Isle of Man, UK and Europe. Every time you load this front page, a random image - selected from my photographs - will appear below. Also below, you will find the latest news item that I've posted to the website, as well as links to the most recent and the full news archive ... I try to keep the news up to date whenever I get a chance, with both what I'm up to and what is happening with the site - so keep an eye on it!

Project Team:
Richard Chiverrell and Geoff Thomas The project was a new initiative, but built upon existing research. Three objectives were targeted in the research that formed part of the Elf Exploration funded Isle of Man Geological Work Programme led by the British Geological Survey (BGS). Quaternary research during the last 30 years produced data and knowledge that was essential for the revision of the existing BGS Geological Map of the Isle of Man (Lamplugh 1903). The research grant facilitated the integration of existing key data into a GIS leading towards the production of a new 1:50,000 scale Geological Map and funded a field season to resolve problem locations and to complete the mapping of selected areas. Three deliverables were produced from the research:
  • Digital and paper mapping of the Quaternary Geology of the Isle of Man, which forms a large portion of the new 1:50000 Geological Map. The map will be published in late 2001.
