Three objectives were targeted in the research that formed part of the Elf Exploration funded Isle of Man Geological Work Programme led by the British Geological Survey (BGS). Quaternary research during the last 30 years produced data and knowledge that was essential for the revision of the existing BGS Geological Map of the Isle of Man (Lamplugh 1903). The research grant facilitated the integration of existing key data into a GIS leading towards the production of a new 1:50,000 scale Geological Map and funded a field season to resolve problem locations and to complete the mapping of selected areas. Three deliverables were produced from the research: Digital and paper mapping of the Quaternary Geology of the Isle of Man, which forms a large portion of the new 1:50000 Geological Map. The map will be published in late 2001.
