Topic: The Vikings and Their Pan-Nordic Predecessors
Topic Editor: Maria Marius Topic Description: The sacking of the monastery of Lindisfarne in June of the year 793 marked the official beginning of the Viking Age. Over the next several centuries, the Vikings ranged eastward from the cities of the Rus, south to the Emperor's palace in Miklagard (Constantinople), and west to Greenland, Iceland and Vinland the Good. At various times, the Vikings established a military hegemony over portions of present day Russia, Ireland, England, Scotland, France and Italy. Yet the predecessors of the Vikings are barely mentioned by historians. What led to the tremendous explosion of trade, piracy, and conquest amongst the Vikings themselves? Message: Global Warming

In several different sources, I have seen reference to the climactic optimum which occurred around the time the Vikings burst forth on the world scene. I can see how this would lead to a larger food supply and thus contribute to a lower death rate amongst children and the eldely, the most vulnerable members of any population group. However, I don't think an excess supply of rutabagas is a sufficient explanation for the explosive energy of the Viking Age. Message: No, many good years isn't enough by itself

(An Arcanum walkthrough)
Last updated: 29th March, 2002
Introduction
Arcanum is one of the most innovative RPGs to have been released since Fallout, which is no surprise given that its creators were part of the original Fallout team. The quirky blend of technology, magick, and the 'steampunk' setting remeniscent of our own 1800's make for interesting fare indeed. If this is the first RPG you've ever attempted, then be warned: it is quite a difficult game. Figuring out what you have to do to complete a quest is one thing; being able to accomplish it is another thing altogether. However, with this guide at your disposal, hopefully your objectives may be made that little bit clearer, and you can kick back and enjoy this fantastic game. By the way, it's best to ignore what a lot of the mainstream gaming sites said about Arcanum. They were largely over-critical. Sure, the graphics are nothing to write home about, and the interface is a bit unwieldy until you get used to it... but once you get past these niggly bits you'll find an RPG of astonishing depth lurking behind there! It took me literally months to finish my first game, and then I found myself itching to start a new one the very next day.
Conventions
Once again, I've chosen to eschew that handy yet game spoiling Table of Contents. OK, so this Guide is loaded with outright spoilers anyway, but I try not to ruin all the fun right up front by providing you with a listing of all the important locations you will visit. If you're looking for references to a particular location, person, weapon, etc., then just search for it in your browser.

The 'Viking Shield' from Archaeology
Peter Beatson
- NVG Miklagard
Introduction
The large circular shield of the Vikings was part of a conservative tradition of manufacture. The best known intact examples from the Viking Age are those that lined the gunwales of the buried warship from Gokstad, Norway ( Fig. 1 ) dated to c.905 AD (Bonde and Christensen 1993). They are similar to shields from Thorsberg bog (Raddatz 1987) and other Danish weapon deposits of the Roman Iron Age. Though archaeological evidence dries up with the adoption of Christian burial rites, art sources (such as the Lewis chessmen) indicate that kite shields were accepted in the Norse lands in the twelfth century, along with a small round buckler (Karlsson 1993). Scandinavian settlers seem to have adopted different (native Insular?) designs in the Irish Sea region, judging by material from burials there. These variants may be discussed in a separate paper.

Treasures of a Saxon King of Essex
An archaeological excavation by the Museum of London Archaeology Service at Priory Crescent, Prittlewell, Essex in autumn 2003 unearthed a 7th century grave that is perhaps the most spectacular discovery of its kind made during the past 50 years - the grave is probably that of an Anglo-Saxon King of Essex . The range and combination of objects and how they were placed in the grave to create a setting for the dead king is unique. Weapons, equipment for feasting and personal possessions were found. The coffin contained items that had been placed on the body as part of the burial ritual. These included two small gold foil crosses, two gold coins and a gold belt buckle. The survival of the chamber and its contents is due to the mound above the grave collapsing into the open chamber as the roof timbers decayed. However, the high acidity of the sand filling the burial chamber has meant that no trace of a body survived. The objects in the grave such as the sword suggest it was almost certainly that of a man. The contents of the burial chamber, down to the 'king's' shoe buckles (above) were still in place. The finds will be on show in London and Southend for the next few weeks.
