A bystander also was shot, and doctors believe he is clinically dead, Palestinian sources said. The Islamic Jihad activist was identified as Nazem Mubarak, the Palestinian sources said. An Israeli military source said Israeli troops entered the Tulkarem refugee camp in search of suspects, including an Islamic Jihad member accused of planning terror attacks. Shots were fired at the soldiers, the source said. The troops fired toward two men who ran away and refused to stop, said the source. One of the men, the Islamic Jihad member suspected of planning and directing suicide bombings, was hit, the source said. The shooting came on the same day Israeli troops in Jenin arrested the head of Islamic Jihad's political wing for the West Bank, Israeli military and Palestinian security sources said.

ISLAMIC MOVEMENT OF UZBEKISTAN CONTROLS DRUG TRAFFIC TO CENTRAL ASIA, SPECIAL SERVICES SAY
According to Kirghiz secret services, channels for trafficking drugs from Afghanistan to Central Asian countries are currently controlled by gunmen of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU).
The above has been revealed by Bolot Dzhanuzakov, head of the National Security Service of Kirghizia, in an interview the Slovo Kyrgyzstana newspaper carried Tuesday.
Dzhanuzakov said that gunmen led by the IMU's Dzhuma Namangani control the northern section of the drug traffic from Afghanistan. He noted that, apart from being drug traffickers, they also sell drugs in Kirghizia, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.
The National Security Service chief believes that "the main task of the international terrorists is to keep the drug traffic going, as the drug business has been and remains the main source of finance for international terrorism." Dzhanuzakov recalled that "Afghanistan is a leader of illicit drug trade, accounting for two-thirds of the world's narcotics output." Dzhanuzakov also declared that there remains the possibility of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan's gunmen invading Kirghizia. "We are ready to repel a possible invasion, and we possess reliable information on the number, plans and whereabouts of the gunmen," said Dzhanuzakov. He added that Afghanistan remains the seat of bandit units.

Islamic Calligraphy from a Private Collection
Editor's note: This is one in a series of articles showing objects from a private collection of Islamic art. This article covers highlights of the calligraphy collection.
JB: Many of our readersmyself includedapproach these calligraphic works with little or no background knowledge. Could you please introduce us to the field of calligraphy?

AR: There are two key facts that will help you appreciate the elevated position of calligraphy in the Islamic world: First, specific depictions of the human form are considered sacrilege in Islam . Second, as you learned when we discussed the amulet portion of my collection, verses of the Holy Koran figure significantly in everyday Islamic life.
JB: So, you're suggesting that these factors focused much creative and artistic energy on the written word?

AR: Indeed. And the calligrapher , because he could both delight the eye and feed the soul, held an honored place in the culture . The value of calligraphy was such that it could be readily converted into currency: calligraphic panels traded for their weight in gold
JB: Literally?

Islamic Poetry
Reflections of Taqwa
It pains me to look around and see how precious life is wasted, and how this beautiful world is being slowly poisoned. I feel so sad to see little children grow up in ignorance; knowing little about Islam and being taught not to care. In all the talk of economic development, growing cities, higher standards of living - I still see the spiritual poverty, the broken hearts and instability of human beings, whose needs are no longer met. Human beings, caught in the web of the new age and who, in their ignorance, too often do not know how to escape its evil clutches. My poems are a personal expression of what I see around me and what I see as the answer to all this mess, which we call western civilization. Yet, the spirit of man remains intact and strong, as we submit to Allah and follow Islam. There is no beauty without truth, no goodness without sacrifice and no salvation without obedience.
In Allah's name
by Velma Cook Everything in and around us - everything that exists which we don't know about - all belongs to Allah, the Creator of all. Everything we do therefore, should be in His name.

Recent Terrorism Events: Background and Context Table of Contents Links Page Americans responded to the September 11 terrorist strikes on New York and Washington, D.C., with a mix of anger toward the terrorists, generosity and empathy for the victims, and bewilderment at the intentions of people who would kill themselves and thousands of others. Policymakers face daunting tasks in waging war against shadowy terrorists and preventing further attacks, and they also must navigate the U.S. public reaction. A majority of Americans support military action, but they puzzle over the motives of terrorism and wonder why the U.S. is hated by so many people abroad. HAMAS (Islamic Resistance Movement) Description The HAMAS (in Arabic, an acronym for "Harakat Al-Muqawama Al-Islamia" Islamic Resistance Movement and a word meaning courage and bravery) is a radical Islamic fundamentalist organization which became active in the early stages of the intifada, operating primarily in the Gaza District but also in Judea and Samaria. Formed in late 1987 as an outgrowth of the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood. Various HAMAS elements have used both political and violent means, including terrorism, to pursue the goal of establishing an Islamic Palestinian state in place of Israel. Loosely structured, with some elements working clandestinely and others working openly through mosques and social service institutions to recruit members, raise money, organize activities, and distribute propaganda. HAMAS’s strength is concentrated in the Gaza Strip and a few areas of the West Bank. Also has engaged in political activity, such as running candidates in West Bank Chamber of Commerce elections. Activities HAMAS activists, especially those in the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, have conducted many attacks—including large-scale suicide bombings—against Israeli civilian and military targets. In the early 1990s, they also targeted suspected Palestinian collaborators and Fatah rivals. HAMAS increased its operational activity during 2002-2003 claiming numerous attacks against Israeli interests. The group has not targeted US interests—although some US citizens have been killed in HAMAS operations—and continues to confine its attacks to Israelis inside Israel and the territories.

THE ISLAMIC TALIBAN MOVEMENT
And The Dangers of Regional Assimilation
Click here to read Nida'ul Islam's interview with Taliban's spokesperson

When the 'Students of Islamic Knowledge Movement' (Taliban) emerged at the beginning of 1995 and swept over most of the southern and eastern states of Afghanistan in the course of one year, many questions arose about the identity of the Movement, its obje ctives, the sides that support it and the reasons for its swift victories.
With the development of events along with the fall of most of the Afghani states to the will of the Mujahideen and the domination of 80% of the Muslim Afghani land, the profile of the evolving Movement began to appear, especially after it took over the capital city, Kabul, and expelled from it the Shiite-Communist confederation.
So, what are the facts behind this Movement and its objectives? How did it deal with Arab Mujahideen there? What are the dangers of the conspiracies that plans to domesticate it and attempts to change its path to conform with the interests of the regional and international powers, especially that of the United States and it's allies?

The Development of the Movement Before examining the details of this, it is necessary to briefly highlight the state of affairs that existed in Afghanistan before the development of this Jihadi Movement.
