The faith of Islam arose in western Arabia with God's revelation to the Prophet Muhammad (ca. 570-632) by the angel Gabriel. These sacred messages were written down by 651 as the holy book, the Qur'an. In 622 Muhammad left Mecca for Medina in a journey called the hijra which marks the beginning of the Muslim calendar (1 A.H.). In 630 he designated Mecca the spiritual and geographical center of Islam.
Islam demonstrates its faith in the building of religious monuments and the illumination of the Qur'an and celebrates all aspects of daily life by adorning the most humble of objects. Arabic calligraphy was the vehicle that spread the message of Islam and thus became the central, most venerated art form. The arabesque, derived from the classical vine scroll, evolved into Islamic art's most distinctive motif.
Although the Qur'an prohibits the worship of idols, it does not forbid representations of humans, animals, and birds in a secular context. Living beings, however, are not permitted as decoration in religious buildings or in the Qur'an.

Islamic art is perhaps the most accessible manifestation of a complex civilization that often seems enigmatic to outsiders. Through its brilliant use of color and its superb balance between design and form, Islamic art creates an immediate visual impact. Its strong aesthetic appeal transcends distances in time and space, as well as differences in language, culture, and creed. Islamic art not only invites a closer look but also beckons the viewer to learn more. For an American audience a visit to the Islamic galleries of a museum such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art can represent the first step toward penetrating the history of a religion and a culture that are often in the news but are little understood.
Related Links The term Islamic art may be confusing to some. It not only describes the art created specifically in the service of Islam Calligraphy is the most important and pervasive element in Islamic art. It has always been considered the noblest form of art because of its association with the Another characteristic of Islamic art is a preference for covering surfaces with patterns composed of geometric or vegetal elements. Complex geometric designs, as well as intricate patterns of vegetal ornament (such as the arabesque), create the impression of unending repetition, which is believed by some to be an inducement to contemplate the infinite nature of God. This type of nonrepresentational decoration may have been developed to such a high degree in Islamic art because of the absence of figural imagery, at least within a religious context.

The Department of Middle Eastern, Islamic and Asian Art encompasses works from all of the major cultures of the Ancient Near East, as well as Islamic Art from all parts of the Muslim world and the arts of Asia. The collections span a period of over six thousand years and represent a survey of the history of artistic accomplishment from early Mesopotamia, Anatolia and Iran in the Near East, to Islamic manuscripts and Asian sculptures and ceramics. Included in the collection are Assyrian relief carvings, and important examples of Islamic decorative arts, especially the art of the book.
The Asian collection comprises art of East, Southeast, South and Central Asia. They illustrate the diverse creative achievements of artists and artisans in Asia, and may embody Eastern religions or philosophies, views of the world, concepts of beauty, or notions of practicality. The majority of works are from China, Japan, India and Korea, with notable examples of Cambodian, Nepalese, Tibetan, Vietnamese, Ry ky an, and Indonesian art. The over 2,600 works in the Asian collection range in date from around 2500 BC to the present. Included are screens, scrolls, manuscripts, miniature paintings, lacquer, ceramics, sculpture, small-carved objects, bronzes, furniture, armor, weapons, games and textiles. Areas of strength include lacquerware and secular art from East Asia, and Hindu sculpture from South Asia.

I slam and Islamic art - Islam is the religion of Muslims, based upon the submission of the faithful to the will of Allah (the only God) as this was revealed in CE 610 by the angel Gabriel to the Prophet Mohammed (Arabian, 570?-632) in a cave near Mecca, in what is now Saudi Arabia. Mohammed recorded these revelations in the Koran (or Qu'ran ) Islam's holiest book. Muslims believe that Muhammad is the last in a line of prophets that includes Moses, Abraham, and Jesus Christ. Today, one fifth of the world's population believes in Islam. The adjectival form is Islamic. Of all the visual arts, calligraphy has been most highly regarded as a fine art by Muslims. The Arabic alphabet in various scripts, generally in combination with arabesque ornament , became the most prized decoration for architecture and other functional works, such as furniture textiles , and vessels . Indeed, with the exception of poets and calligraphers, Muslims have never looked to artists for special insights or meanings. They have regarded the arts primarily as the decorative arts , based greatly upon the study of mathematics , and involving intricately geometric designs Islamic houses of worship are known in the west as mosques . Some features of a mosque are the dikka mihrab , and minbar , and minaret (a tower The absence of figures is a characteristic feature of Islamic religious art. The Wonder Of Symmetry
Note: As, I have said before, all the elements used by Islamic art (geometry, patterns containing star shapes, symmetry, replication, word, light and water) are of profound significance from a scientific perspective. For example, light, we have discovered is something very special - nothing exceeds the speed of light. The fact that a DNA molecule can replicate itself (generate a repeat pattern) is what makes life possible and water is the most crucial requirement for life to exist. The power and sacredness of words (celebrated through calligraphy in Islamic art) is what distinguishes the human brain from that of other animals. Star shapes are also something special, for all the elements including those of which we are made were forged through the process of nuclear fusion in stars. All these themes, I have developed in detail in my books. Here, I shall limit myself to rejoicing in symmetry.
Symmetry deserves to be the subject of periodic festivals so that in its lofty atmosphere one can search for the relation between different manifestations of the human spirit. K.S.Mamedov (Russian Physicist)

    The Islamic Art Network
The Islamic Art Network is a project undertaken by the Thesaurus Islamicus Foundation, a charitable, non-profit foundation that was established to advance, support and promote the protection, preservation, study and dissemination of the Islamic intellectual, cultural and artistic patrimony by any means deemed appropriate.
The Network currently consists of two sections:
    1) The bulletins of the Comité de Conservation des Monuments de l’Art Arabe.
    2) A Photo Archive of the Islamic monuments of Cairo. Over the coming months a map of the Islamic monuments of Cairo will also be added, and the website will eventually be expanded to include other major Islamic cities such as Fez, Damascus, Istanbul and Isfahan. Although particular items, such as the Comité bulletins will be of special value to experts in the subject, the glossary and photo archive are intended to provide an introduction to less experienced readers, and it is hoped that the Network will provide a comprehensive resource for any level of research or interest in Islamic Art and Architecture.
Comité Bulletins The Comité de Conservation des Monuments de l’Art Arabe was founded in 1881, by decree of the Khedive Tawfiq. It remained the sole body responsible for the preservation of Islamic and Coptic monuments in Egypt, until its dissolution in 1961 when these responsibilities were transferred to the Egyptian Antiquities Organisation.
