... Contemporary Irish Poetry History The Robert W. Woodruff Library of Emory University began building its Irish literary collections in the late-seventies in response to the research interests of Professor Ron Schuchard and noted Joyce biographer Richard Ellmann. Since that time, the library has continued to expand its Irish book collections and, most notably, its Irish literary manuscript holdings. These resources provide direct support for teaching and research at Emory while also attracting visiting scholars from around the world. Here students can study the creative process by examining manuscript drafts of a writer's work, while visiting scholars can pursue a wide array of critical, biographical, bibliographical, and textual research projects.

The Abbey Theatre, organized in 1904, grew from the Irish National Theatre Society. Indicative of its association with Irish nationalism and the literary renaissance, the opening night of the theatre presented short works by W. B. Yeats, Lady Gregory, and John M. Synge. This collection of materials relating to the Abbey Theatre includes 22 play parts (typescript portions of plays produced at the theatre, some with holograph annotations) and approximately 467 programs for plays produced at the theatre between 1925-1942. Also present is correspondence of Eric Gorman, the Secretary of the National Theatre Society, with such writers as Sean O’Casey regarding productions of the theatre.

A Pocket History of Irish Literature
by A. Norman Jeffares
Since Irish writers first began to write in English, their presence on the stage of world literature has been astonishing, their achievements culminating in the awarding of four Nobel Prizes for Literature - to Yeats, Shaw, Beckett and Heaney. In A Pocket of Irish Literature Professor Jeffares traces the long and noble list of Irish dramatists, poets, novelists and short story writers from Swift to the end of the twentieth century. The story of Irish writing is followed, beginning with Jonathan Swift, and working through playwrights Synge and O'Casey to Beckett and Friel; in novels, from Maria Edgeworth, through James Joyce, Elizabeth Bowen, Kate O'Brien, Flann O'Brien, to contemporaries Julia O' Faolain and Roddy Doyle; from nineteenth-century poetry through Yeats to Paul Durcan. All the leading writers, and some of the lesser known, are placed in context, and their works listed, while commentary provides brief but telling insights into their work and lives. A readable, accessible overview of Irish literary achievement through the centuries.

Readers should understand that this is the ONLY overview of Irish Literature we have in print. It is a perfect text for American students, the best text there is to serve as the foundation text for any introductory Irish Studies course. The editors chose to forgo inclusion of literary works readily available for the most part (Yeats, OCasey, and the like), to give precedence to more to those that are harder to find, but which need to be studied seriously in order to get an overall understanding of Irish literature.

English majors may pursue a concentration in Irish Literature. To complete the concentration, the student must take four courses focusing on Irish Literature or language, such as:
English 233 Modern Irish Literature English 234 Contemporary Irish Literature English 264 Studies in Individual (Irish) Writers
Some of the Irish writers featured in English 264 have been Yeats, Joyce, and Heaney. Fulfilling this concentration does not necessarily require taking extra English courses beyond the number required for the standard English major.

http://www.siu.edu/~ireland/gcil.htm
General Collection in Irish Literature The Humanities Division and Special Collections at the Morris Library of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale have worked together to develop our holdings in Irish literature. While Special Collections has more manuscripts and scarce editions than the general collection, the stacks have a broad selection of secondary material, especially on the early twentieth century. Our holdings include nearly 1,000 secondary works on James Joyce alone, as well as nearly 500 separate books by him. Forty editions by Mary Lavin are on the shelves as well as over 400 by W. B. Yeats. The holdings on other Irish artists of the period are also unusually good, including, among others, significant coverage of Samuel Beckett, George Russell, Lady Augusta Gregory, Lennox Robinson, Lord Dunsany, Liam O'Flaherty, George Moore, Brian O'Nolan, William Trevor, Padraic Colum, Sean O'Casey, and Austin Clarke. In addition to these specialized areas, the basic holdings in Irish literature are representative of a fine research library. There are over 100 books of travel and descriptive writing about Ireland as well as over 2,000 works on Irish history, society, and politics. Over 200 books discussing the economic and historical conditions of Northern Ireland alone are included in the collection. Also, Morris Library subscribes to a number of Irish and Irish-American journals including Irish Historical Studies and Eire-Ireland as well as numerous less common publications such as

Scottish and Irish Literature
Research and publication on the history, literature and languages of Scotland is a major strength of the School. The strong linguistic and cultural links between Scotland and Ireland are explored in the taught MLitt in Irish and Scottish Studies (see above). Scottish special interests include the Scottish Enlightenment; Scott and the Waverley Novels; Burns; MacDiarmid; Muir and contemporary Scottish writing. Irish research interests include Yeats, Joyce and contemporary Irish and Northern Irish literature. For research topics linked to the Celtic element in Scottish or Irish culture, joint supervision with the Celtic Department can be arranged. Research into Scottish and Irish culture benefits from three major Faculty research initiatives. First, there is the Research Institute of Irish and Scottish Studies . The Elphinstone Institute is a centre for the study of the history, languages and traditions of the North of Scotland. The Irish-Scottish Academic Initiative, which links Aberdeen with Trinity College, Dublin, Queen's University, Belfast, and the University of Strathclyde, aims to develop collaborative research in these fields.

Irish literature For a comparatively small country, Ireland has made a disproportionate contribution to world literature in all its branches. The works that are best known outside the country are in English , but Irish Gaelic also has the most significant body of written literature, both ancient and recent, in any Celtic language, in addition to a strong oral tradition of legends and poetry. See also the main article on modern literature in Irish This Irish language tradition has contributed to making Irish literature in English something quite distinctive from English literature in other countries. From the older tradition, Irish writers in English have inherited a sense of wonder in the face of nature, a narrative style that tends towards the deliberately exaggerated or absurd, a keen sense of the power of satire. In addition, the interplay between the two languages has resulted in an English dialect, Hiberno-Irish, that lends a distinctive syntax and music to the literature written in it.
