G'day and welcome to the web page for Yeatsians of the State of Victoria, Australia
Beyond Ben Bulben
The Australian Yeats Society BEYOND BEN BULBEN in the State of Victoria Australia consists of a group with a shared interest in Irish and Anglo-Irish literature and poetry, especially that of WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS (1865- 1939). The title BEYOND BEN BULBEN evokes the distance - both in time and space - from Sligo and the magical YEATS COUNTRY, in the heart of which is the resting place of W. B. Yeats and his wife George in Drumcliffe Churchyard. At the foot of BEN BULBEN the mountain which dominates Sligo town from the North and faces that other dominant magical cairn topped mountain KNOCKNAREA.
MacLysaght's The Surnames of Ireland defines the name YEATS as meaning 'dweller by the gate'. A more appropriate name could not have been given to W. B. and his family; for their vast opus is indeed a 'doorway' to the intellectual 'truth' of life.
Beyond Ben Bulben invite you through this gate to meet with
the contemporaries of W. B. Yeats including: AE(George Russell)

Last updated 9/22/2003 Cath Maige Tuired: The Second Battle of Mag Tuired. Edited by Elizabeth A. Gray. Dublin: Irish Texts Society, 1982. Series: Irish Texts Society (Series) ; v. 52. A fascinating story, with lots of interesting, useful notes about one of the tales dealing with the early days of the Tuatha de Dannan. Although this is a scholarly edition, complete with introduction, notes and glossary, there is a facing page translation in English of the Irish text. Gray also wrote a series of excellent articles on Cath Maige Tuired in Eigse vols. XVIII-XX 1981-83.

THE MYTHOLOGICAL CYCLE.
The literature of ancient Ireland has been called "the earliest voice from the dawn of western European civilisation".
In his remarkable and inspirational book The White Goddess (Faber and Faber. London. 1961) Robert Graves said, "English poetic education should, really, begin not with the Canterbury Tales, nor with The Odyssey not even with Genesis, but with The Song of Amergin."
The Song of Amergin, which Graves tentatively but brilliantly restores in the White Goddess, is not the earliest poetic incantation in Irish literature but it is certainly outstanding for its evocative power. It holds, as well, great fascination for the scholar since variants hide the ancient Celtic calendar-alphabet of the learned caste, the Druids.
Unfortunately much of that Early Irish Literature has been lost; what remains is contained in the few priceless manuscripts that have survived centuries of warfare and invasion.

Irish Literature
Ancient Ireland
Books were first brought to Ireland by teachers of Christianity, and after accepting the new religion, the Irish learned to make their own Christian books. Books in those days were not written on paper, but on strong velvety vellum, made from the skins of young animals, most often calves. The skin had to be scraped and bleached and stretched to be made into vellum. Then it was written on, folded, and bound between covers to make a manuscript.

Limericks
The limerick probably got its name from an Irish refrain that contained the name of County Limerick, which is in southwest Ireland. The limerick is a five-line nonsense poem, with the rhyme scheme a-a-b-b-a-the first, second, and fifth lines (a) have three stresses; the third and fourth lines (b) each have two.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Irish literature For a comparatively small country, Ireland has made a disproportionate contribution to world literature in all its branches. The works that are best known outside the country are in English , but Irish Gaelic also has the most significant body of written literature, both ancient and recent, in any Celtic language, in addition to a strong oral tradition of legends and poetry. See also the main article on modern literature in Irish This Irish language tradition has contributed to making Irish literature in English something quite distinctive from English literature in other countries. From the older tradition, Irish writers in English have inherited a sense of wonder in the face of nature, a narrative style that tends towards the deliberately exaggerated or absurd, a keen sense of the power of satire. In addition, the interplay between the two languages has resulted in an English dialect, Hiberno-English , that lends a distinctive syntax and music to the literature written in it.

Selected Poems of James Clarence Mangan
Edited with an Introduction and notes by Jacques Chuto, Rudolph Holzapfel, Peter van de Kamp, and Ellen Shannon-Mangan
Foreword by Terence Brown James Clarence Mangan (1803-1849), the greatest Irish poet before Yeats, was for a long time both famous and unknown. While legends about him prospered after his death, his works remained largely unread. Only recently have his poems been collected by an international team of scholars and published by Irish Academic Press. It is from this four-volume edition that the present selection has been made. Containing upwards of 230 annotated poems, it will provide the general reader with a more complete view of Mangan's many-faceted genius than has hitherto been available.

Standish O'Grady was a major figure of the Irish Literary Revival whose work has received scant attention.
