My exercises are the strictly mechanical manipulation type, which students find useful as a foundation before proceeding to more creative use of the language: e.g., things like tense changing, choosing the right mutation, gender agreement, preposition choice, etc. Not fascinating reading, but necessary practice, at least for those whose learning style is formally oriented..." Nancy Stenson I have modified some of the exercises in Chapters 2 through 7 into Forms based questions and answers. Eventually, I plan to modify the rest. Ron Ogawa

The irish gaelic language has been in decline since the 1840 s but progress in recent decades has ensured that it will continue as a living language for many
http://nm.essortment.com/irishgaeliclan_rsbt.htm
The Irish Gaelic language
The Irish Gaelic language has been in decline since the 1840's but progress in recent decades has ensured that it will continue as a living language for many years to come
The Irish language is one of several Celtic languages which were once widely spoken across Western and Northern Europe. In later years, the Celtic languages died out in most areas. However, they survived up to the present in Ireland, Scotland, Wales and France. Most visitors to Ireland will see street signs written in two languages. They may even realise that one of them is Irish (sometimes called Gaelic by people outside of Ireland). They are less likely to hear Irish spoken, unless they visit the extreme West and North-West of the country. As a result, many feel that Irish is no longer spoken anywhere. Even the few who are aware of its continued existence in the West of the country assume that it is a relic of the past that is only kept alive for tourism purposes. bodyOffer(19217) There are no longer any people who speak only Irish. However, Irish is still spoken by several thousands of people in preference to English in some parts of Ireland. The 1996 census of population found that over 30 % of the entire population used Irish on a regular basis. Thats well over a million people. Languages can be stubborn entities. They form an intrinsic part of the culture of a group. Governments can fall because or their approach to this topic It would be wrong to underestimate the staying power of a language. There has been talk of the death of Irish for well over a century. Ever since the huge potato famine in the 1840s, there has been a massive decline in the number of native speakers. Irish was associated with poverty and children were severely beaten for speaking it right through the 19th century.

The Irish Gaelic language Group Celtic (with Gaulish Welsh etc.), Goidelic branch (with Scottish and Manx Geography Spoken all over Ireland, being the official language of the Republic of Ireland. Also used in Irish communities in the USA, Great Britain, Canada. History It was obviously one of the last centuries BC when Celtic migrants first reached Ireland. According to written monuments, scholars usually define several periods of its history: Archaic Irish (4-6 centuries), written in Ogham mainly on wood and stone; Old Irish (6-10 cent.) having a great lot of literature works, manuscripts and poetry; Middle Irish (10-13 cent.), a language of transformation; and finally Modern Irish (from the 14th century). In the Archaic period a group of Irish speakers named Scotts land in northern Britain and found Scotland. Probably at the same time the isle of Man was conquered by Scotts too. In the 17th century Ireland was conquered by England, the language becomes quite endangered because of mass repressions. In the last 100 years it is revived in independent Ireland. Phonetics Archaic Irish preserves the Indo-European *kw (so Irish being a q -Celtic tongue). A distinction was made between soft and hard consonants, labialized and unlabialized ones. Final consonants are often dropped. IE

... Links I. History By: Andrew V. Liaugminas T he history of the Irish Gaelic language begins in Central Europe in the 5th century B.C., where a new tribe was taking Europe by storm - the Celts. This tribe was a hospitable group, placing much importance on family and friends - and widely known for their strength and valor in combat, and strong sense of culture in time of peace. Winning battle after battle, the Celts eventually conquered most of modern Europe; occupying lands from the Iberian peninsula in the west, to the Scottish highlands in the north, spanning Europe to the Black Sea in the East, and touching as far south as Central Italy.
During their history, the Celts gathered many names from the other tribes and cultures in Europe. The very word "Celt" comes from " Keltoi " (meaning "secret people"), which was the Ancient Greek name for the tribe. Regionally, the Celts who lived in the Iberian Peninsula were identified as
