Web Original An Iris For Every Garden The old -fashioned favorite is long-blooming, versatile and easy to grow.
The bearded ones
Some tall bearded irises must stay fairly dry because they are susceptible to diseases such as bacterial soft rot where summers are hot and humid. If your summers are sultry, stick with the standard dwarfs (8 to 15 inches tall) and intermediates (16 to 27 inches), which are much less susceptible to these diseases.
All bearded irises are fairly easy to grow, if you give them a sunny, well-drained site with neutral or slightly acidic soil. Bearded irises grow from rhizomes, or fleshy tuberous roots. Do not plant them as deep as you would plant bulbs. Rather, place them so that the tops of the rhizomes show above the soil.
If you live in an area with cold winters but not consistent snow cover, layer some mulch on top of your bearded irises after the ground is frozen. Use a loose organic material such as pine boughs or straw. Don't use leaves or grass clippings, which can pack down and retain too much moisture, causing rot. The Siberians If you're looking for a really tough iris, consider the beardless Siberians

"I feel that I'm a better person for living in this house," said Barry Gildae. "Every morning I wake up and thank God for Fay Jones, Mrs. Hunter and my mother." The house that inspired these extraordinary sentiments stands in East Memphis, near Shady Grove between Yates and I-240.

Who could resist a program titled "Bullet-Proof Grasses and Flack Jacket Perennials?" Certainly not me or the 200 or so others who crammed into the auditorium in the Goldsmith Civic Garden Center at the Memphis Botanic Garden recently to hear landscape designer Jesse Howley.

Because garages are often prominently placed in front of houses, their doors need to be more than functional. Design details should enhance the overall appearance of the house.

The Irresistible Iris BY MICHAEL WEISHAN
Few garden flowers are more magnificent or easier to maintain In many ways, I owe my horticultural career to the tall bearded iris. This plant was my grandfather's passion. As I advertisement
adored my grandfather, it soon became clear that if I wanted to spend any type of quality time with the man, I had better love irises, too. Thus I learned about irises and, by extension, gardening in general. By the age of eight I had advanced sufficiently in my grandfather's rather stern estimation to merit my own row behind the garage. This was Grandpa's "trial garden" where he tested his new crosses. It was quite an honor (Grandpa didn't let just anybody fool around with his beloved irises). The depth of my childhood pride is mirrored in the fact that after more than a quarter century I can still recall the evocative names of my first irises in the order they appeared in the rows: Pacific Palisades, Latin Lover, Winter Olympics, Stepping Out and so on down the line. By the age of nine I had bred my own hybrids (nothing spectacular, I'm sorry to say). By age 10, I was one of the youngest members of the American Iris Society. Advancement came quickly in the iris ranks.

Tucson Botanical Gardens
It's hard to believe there's a botanical garden tucked away in central Tucson just south of Grant Road. But once you leave the parking area and go through the front doors, you're in for a gardening surprise. There you'll find herb gardens, a tropical forest filled greenhouse, xeriscape methods, a wildflower garden, and so much more. You'll have to visit several times during the year to really appreciate all the colors and variety offered at Tucson's Botanical Gardens.
Special events sponsored by the Botanical Gardens like the spring Home Garden Tour or the October La Fiesta de los Chiles and the December Luminaria Nights will keep you entertained while giving you plenty of new gardening ideas. The spring and the fall plant sale will help you to find new desert adapted plants for your home garden.
The Tucson Botanical Gardens is truly of the Old Pueblos treasures. Founded in 1968, the Botanicals Gardens has quickly become one of Tucson's favorites. Established on the estate of Bernice and Rutger Porter, the site was doubled to five acres in 1975. Originally leased for twenty-five years in 1974, the property was deeded by the City to the non-profit organization that facilitates the Botanical Gardens in 1985. The City also provided the Gardens with public restrooms, an iris garden, and a tropical greenhouse in the same year.
The Botanical Gardens have been growing ever since. These exhibits are equally as informative, as they are beautiful. The Native American Crops Garden was added in 1986, and in 1988 a low water use exhibit, the Xeriscape Demonstration Garden began showing Tucsonans the beauty and ease of healthy desert landscaping. This commitment to entertaining and highly useful education drives 100,000 visitors to the Botanical Gardens yearly. There are several services offered by the Gardens both yearly and seasonally. Every Wednesday the Gardeners of Tucson host an informative plant clinic, and the Tucson Organic Gardeners have helped to create the Home Compost Demonstration Site. There are 60-70 classes and workshops offered annually on a variety of horticultural and desert environmental concerns.

During May and June-when Mother Nature reveals her magic and dull soil explodes into brilliant splendor-we make haste to welcome the season. We're excited by spring, eager for summer and all set to explore. What better way to seek tranquility than to be amid flowers and trees that keep secrets and inspire deep thoughts? Come along and traverse the area for those special places where butterflies dance and bountiful woodlands bring peace to the mind! Started in 1951, UNITY VILLAGE offers the visitor 1,400 acres containing fountains, a rose garden, two meditation gardens, and woodlands with walking paths and ponds that surround a natural preserve and nature prairie. A chapel bell tower chimes hourly and plays recitals several times daily. A popular site for outdoor weddings, the Unity Rose Garden contains more than 800 award-winning rose bushes of over 40 varieties. Many of the rose bushes were donated in memory of loved ones. May and June are great times to enjoy the Garden when the roses begin to bloom. The Unity Village compound is a retreat for those seeking spiritual inspiration and its non-denominational chapel welcomes all visitors. In fact, the Village does not charge for the many prayer requests received from those who call and write Silent Unity, a worldwide prayer ministry of Unity School.

Going native with Louisiana iris Elizabeth Cernota Clark Special to The Christian Science Monitor LITTLE ELM, TEXAS - Louisiana irises are lagniappe - a Creole term for a little something extra - for your spring garden. In the perennial quest for succession of color, Louisianas offer a regal seasonal transition, blooming in tandem with, or just after, bearded irises and fading as daylilies begin their reign. Elegant, beardless Louisiana irises bring height, color, and contrast to perennial beds and borders, water gardens, and containers. Despite their name, they thrive in settings beyond the Bayou State's borders - in fact, Louisiana irises are at home in most of the US, even into Canada, as long as their roots are well mulched and they have sufficient water, sunshine, and acidic soil.

3429 - Garden Iris
One of the most spectacular spring-flowering plants is the bearded iris. The multitudes of colors, reminiscent of a rainbow, gave rise to the name. The bearded iris are categorized into three groups: tall bearded (20-48"), intermediate bearded (6-20"), and dwarf bearded (5-6") based upon height and also flowering sequence, the dwarfs flowering earliest along with daffodils and crocus, while the tall varieties flower last, around Mother's Day with peonies. Culture of the bearded iris is simple and straight-forward. Plant in a sunny location where the soil is well-drained. The soil must be prepared by deep digging to create excellent drainage. Incorporate some organic matter such as well-decayed manure or compost to the subsoil, and ground bonemeal or lime can be added to the topsoil, as directed by a soil test. A balanced fertilizer can be applied and worked into the topsoil each spring if soil test results indicate the need. Graded sand or calcined clay can also be added to improve the drainage. The best time to plant is late July through early September. Rhizomes are planted with the attached roots evenly spread in the soil and only half-covered as they prefer to be sun-baked. The plants are used to best advantage as clumps; so, be sure to place the growing points to the outside of the clump because they will continue to grow in the same outward direction and not crowd each other.

CHRISTINE ARPE GANG: When irises are smiling, take notice
Scripps Howard News Service (SH) - Bearded irises have a relatively short season, about six to eight weeks from the earliest bloomers to the latest. So, we need to enjoy them while we can. "This has been a spectacular year," said Steve Stone, a past president of the West Tennessee Iris Society, the group that maintains the iris garden in Germantown, Tenn. Stone talked about some trends in iris growing and provided some tips for getting the biggest and most blooms from established iris plants. Hybridizers have been producing irises with petals that have ruffled edges, Stone said. There are lots of bi-color blue irises and also combinations of maroon and orange colors. Space Age irises that have beards (the fuzzy hair on top of the lower petals) that curve upward into "horns" or "spoons" at the ends are also popular with iris aficionados.
