Iris
With hundreds of varieties in several different colors and combinations, Irises are popular and easy to grow perennial. The most common larger varieties are great at the back of the flower bed or as a cutting. For flower growers, there is a place in your garden for one, or several groups. But, be careful, as they spread quickly and can overcome other flowers. Varieties: There are hundreds of varieties of this easy to grow perennial flower. Regular Irises come in several colors. Some are Bearded, while others are beardless. Regular Irises make great cut flowers, with their tall, sturdy stalks. Dwarf varieties grow much smaller, less than eight inches tall. They are good in flower beds and around rock gardens. Propagation: Irises are grown from both seed and root separation. The roots, or Rhizomes, are easily separated and replanted. The Rhizome looks like a long, thin potato with roots underneath. When transplanting, separate the Rhizome. Make sure to have some root and a leaf or two in each section. Plant the Rhizomes near the surface with the roots below. Space them a foot or so apart . They will fill in the spaces quickly.

Iris are easy to grow This vast family of beautiful perennials is one of the most important of all garden plants. There are hundreds of varieties ranging through almost every color, differing in size, blooming seasons, and even habits of growth and method of propagation. The two most important groups for the average gardener are (1) the Bearded Iris group and (2) the Beardless Iris group. The Bearded Iris group is commonly known as the German Iris and the Beard-less group includes the Japanese Iris.
Within this vast family, there are many different colors, early, midseason, and late flowering, as well as dwarf, intermediate, and tall strains. Every state in the Union, with the possible exception of Florida, can successfully grow irises. Irises demand good drainage and full sun. A good garden soil that will produce corn or potatoes will grow irises, but for the finest flowers and foliage a high- fertility level must be maintained.

Even before World War II, Sumter’s Iris Gardens and Swan Lake was one of the 10 most famous public gardens in the South. After the war, visiting Japanese proclaimed the irises more beautiful than their own. All thanks to Sumter’s Hamilton Carr Bland, who breathed life into a swamp he had intended to convert into a fish pond. Bland, nicknamed "Hallie," was born in September 1880. As a child, he was afflicted with an illness that left him in a wheelchair until about age 17. Therapy later freed him from confinement, but he would need the aid of a cane for the better part of his life. After becoming a successful car dealer in Sumter, his leisure time increased. He turned his interests to gardening and became skilled in his horticultural endeavors at his home on Hampton Avenue. He wanted something more. Something larger. The "Bog," as it was called, captured his interest. He laid plans to build his fish pond. While reading an advertisement in a magazine praising the beauty of Japanese irises—a plant forbidden for export until the turn of the century—he ordered a small quantity to plant in his home garden. The plants arrived without instructions as to their care and planting. So he planted them as if they were the common German bearded irises, which were prolific and easy to grow. He did not know Japanese irises thrive in highly acidic, very wet peat soil . . . like the soil found in swamps such as the one Bland was carving in the "Bog."

    http://www.louisianairis.com/diseases.html
    Diseases
In our southern part of the country, the Louisiana iris lives relatively disease and insect free. I have recently heard about possible insect problems in the Northeast, but as a south Louisiana grower, we do not take any special precautions against disease or insects. However, since the literature reports remedies to certain countrywide problems, it is prudent to share this knowledge. On occasion, Louisiana irises encounter problems with leaf miners, cutworms, or a fungus disease known as iris rust. Cutworms are greenish-brown caterpillars that can damage tender new growth in short order. Many general purpose insecticides will repel these rascals, as will fertilizers which are fortified with insecticides. Leaf miners spread their larvae in a weblike fashion in the leaf tissue. Active during the growth season, their channels are readily visible. Several new systemic insecticides are very effective against the leaf miner, but they may require a license to obtain and special precautions in their use. Less frequently the grower may find problems with the iris borer or leaf spot. The iris borer is not usually a serious problem in the Gulf South, but where they are planted in colder climates near the bearded irises, the borer may be a problem. Professional help may be needed if your garden has this problem, but the new systemic insecticides containing dimethoate are reported quite effective. You may try an October and a springtime application (after heavy mulch is removed) of "Cygon."

    June 06, 2004
    Memorable Weather
Typical for the day in Austin, Memorial Day brought on the weather. We hit our first 100 degree day of 2004 (a bit of a surprise since we only hit 90 a few days before). Then it began pouring rain, then hail (bean-sized). Then the sun shone and it continued to rain and hail. We had scattered thunderstorms throughout the week. Just as we'd tucked into bed around midnight on Friday (6/4), it really poured. Thunder bounced of the downtown buildings across Town Lake and one crack of lightning hit so close that I jumped out of bed with a curse. The electricity had gone off up and down the street and the surge protectors were beeping anxiously. When the electricity came on at 5:30 Saturday morning (thank you, road crews), we discovered that the DSL router had been fried. Thus, no internet, email, weblog updates or surfing for about twelve hours. Strange how quickly one feels cut off. What's happening out there!?! Then... AJM: "Ronald Reagan died."
