Iris was the Greek goddess of the rainbow and her name is therefore an appropriate one for a genus containing more than 300 species of multicoloured flowering plants which have been cherished for their beauty since antiquity. The genus Iris is native to almost every country in the northern hemisphere. Flower structure. . .
Iris flowers vary greatly in colour, shape and size but in general structure all are the same:
  • Each flower has six segments in two sets of three The three upper segments are petals and called standards The three lower segments are called falls Between standards and falls are three flat-coloured bands which arch over the stamens. These are style-arms.

The many faces of iris What is your image of an iris? Gardeners tending small-space or container gardens might think of the early-blooming, bulbous dwarf iris Iris danfordiae or Iris reticulata Cottage gardeners would claim the showy bearded iris Siberian iris Iris siberica ), or the water-loving blue flags Iris versicolor, Iris virginica var. shrevei ) that anchor shorelines and streambeds. For others, the iris of their dreams is the late-blooming Japanese iris Iris ensata syn. kaempferi ) with its much photographed but oh-so-fleeting, orchid-like flowers. And the images continue.
With 200 different species, and hundreds more cultivars grown today in sites as diverse as high desert and low wetland, iris options might appear overwhelming. To simplify selection, gardeners should study their site and then choose the iris whose needs perfectly match the intended location.
To perform their best and produce show-quality flowers, bearded iris should have full sun, outstanding drainage and a slow-release organic fertilizer applied after the flowers fade. Divide the fat rhizomes in early autumn every three to four years to reinvigorate flowering. Dwarf iris and the other true bulbs like the deep yellow Iris bucharica , newly planted in the Bulb Garden, appreciate good drainage with more moisture in spring than summer. The blue flags thrive in full sun in a rich, moist or very wet soil. Siberian iris will adapt to less sun and less water in most gardens. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers that overstimulate foliage and cause flopping in midsummer.

GARDENING: Two iris shows in valley this weekend
The Las Vegas Valley has finally come of age. This weekend, you have two iris shows to chose from. One is at the Nevada Garden Clubs Center, located in Lorenzi Park at 3333 W Washington Ave. in Las Vegas, and the other is at the Galleria at Sunset mall, 1300 W. Sunset Road in Henderson. Both shows are Saturday and Sunday. The show at the Garden Center is from 1-5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The show at the Galleria is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Today's irises have come a long way from the original "flag" irises of yesteryear. Come see a "Kaleidoscope of `new' Irises" at the Garden Center and "Blaze of Color" at the mall. You'll be sure to find at least one variety that will be your favorite, said Dorlene Waite, president of the Las Vegas Iris Society. Now, some words of advice. When coming to these shows, you will see varieties you dearly want, but you'll have to wait until July, when their rhizomes will be for sale. If you have a short memory, jot down the irises you like, so in July you'll be able to purchase them. It is a great way to start growing irises and starting out with the best. Irises originated in a climate very much like ours, and are often known as the "orchids of the desert."

Although you might not recognize his name, Currier (a rhumatologist by trade) is a legend in the iris world. In fact, he created not only the first yellow Siberian Iris, but also 200 new varieties that nature never imagined. You'd think that any man with such a remarkable gift for beauty must have fallen in love with the garden as a youngster. But Currier's passion for the delicate flowers wasn't kindled until he was almost 50 years old when somehow, a mysterious iris catalogue appeared at his door. "It wasn't really meant for me," he said. "So I gave it back to the postman the next day. And he said, 'Oh I know Doctor, but there's no such address so I left it here.' Currier smiles. "There was no more sense in my starting with that particular flower than the fact that they were in that catalogue." And start he did. He joined the Day Lily and Iris Society. He learned about hybridizingthe artistic science of creating new breeds of iris by combining the traits of existing flowers. And where once his microscope revealed the riddles of the human cell, his focus now was flowers.

Greetings to deliberate or casual visitors. This is the first airing of what I hope will be a series of illustrated pages broadly centred on the topic of gardening. Over the years I have accumulated a number of photos of plants, gardens and garden-related subjects. With the sudden, unexpected offer of free webspace by my service provider, it seemed the ideal opportunity to share some of these. The collection (alright - there's only one topic there as yet) is eclectic. They are subjects that have caught my eye at one time or another, or which have interested me for some time. Welcome to the ragbag.
Let's not waste bandwidth - it's Japanese Irises
Over the next six months, I hope to add bamboos, alpine plants, some unusual species irises and half-hardy bulbs. Beyond that, it would be good to add foliage elements in garden design, Andean climbing plants.... several pages on half-hardy bulbs are nearing completion right now.
