L eota's Iris Garden is located just outside Sacramento in the heart of the Sierra Nevada foothills. We are a family owned business. What started as a love for plants and an enthusiasm for iris, quickly turned into a beautiful garden of over 1500 different varieties of tall bearded iris. Slide your mouse over the persons for identification Deciding to share our joy of both gardening and iris with others, we opened to the public in 1999. We work along side with our children and their families to provide a welcome environment with picnic tables under the shade of mature oak trees and with ample parking. Please enjoy our website as a representation of what we at Leota's have to offer. Of course nothing substitutes for visiting the actual garden, so if you have a chance to come visit us, take it! The best time of year to visit is between late April and May. We also have many reblooming iris, which bloom a second time from October through December. If you plan on bringing larger groups to visit the garden, please let us know in advance so we can make sure you are greeted.

(nee-oh-mah-reek-ah)
Walking Iris
IRIDACEAE ( Iris family) The walking iris, also known as the twelve apostles, grows in grassy clumps. The plant can grow from 1-5 feet high and wide. A mighty appearance to be sure. The leaves are flat swords about one inch wide. The flowers are like miniature iris blooms. They are oh so delicate and cute and appear as if they are walking way from the plant on their long stems. Generally, the bloom will appear when the plant is pot bound or two years in age. Often in a fast growing situation or a warmer zone, this will happen in one year. In colder zones, this plant needs to come inside for the winter. In warmer zones of nine and higher they can be planted in the ground, or if lucky with a beneficial microclimate the plant may survive in zone 8. The best growing condition is sun to half shade, especially if it is morning sun. As always, a good drained soil is required - although the plant can tolerate a moist situation. I like growing mine in a clay pot.

Discriminating Gardener and Collector Home Glick Pick Archives Iris cristata Imagine my surprise when I revisited a distant woodland bed here on the farm, that I'd planted a few years earlier with some plants of Iris cristata. I found that I'd inherited a colony numbering hundreds of plants. In fact the colony was so tightly formed that it made a groundcover impenetrable to weeds. Since that day, I've used and recommended Iris cristata extensively as a groundcover to many a gardening friend.
The flower colors and patterns of Iris cristata are one of the most variable that I've ever seen, and there are many named cultivars including several forms of Iris cristata alba. You can see an image at: http://www.mobot.org/gardeninghelp/plantfinder/codea/K700.shtml
I've spent a lot of time photographing many different flower forms of Iris cristata, and have grandiose plans of putting them together in a gallery one of these days when things slow down, so stay tuned.
As the name implies, the specific epithet, cristata means crested and refers to the crest in the falls of the flower. I'd hoped to give you more specific information about the nativity of

Some internet discussion of this hybrids: From Jan Smithen in New Zealand , 18 Apr 1999, on Medit-Plants
"I want to second what Loren says about transplanting or dividing Pacific Coast Native Iris (PCNs). I killed several before I learned, they MUST only be disturbed at the beginning or during their active growth period. And like so many California natives, this is during our winter rainy season.
"You'll find that after yours have been in the ground for a few years, they'll spread out and develop empty centers. You'll be tempted to divide them as soon as bloom is finished. They are now entering dormancy and have almost no roots at all!
"As Loren suggested, wait until mid to late October, and you'll see little fans of new growth developing around the outside edges. If you dig down with your fingers, you'll see white roots sprouting from pink bases on the thin rhizome.
"With a fork, lift the whole clump and break it apart at its natural separations with your hands. Keep the divisions damp in the shade while you re-dig and amend the soil. Then replant your divisions at the same level they were before. Blooming does not depend on the size or age of the clump and your new divisions will generously bloom the following spring. They like light shade with plenty of reflected light, good loose humusy soil on the acid side and fairly good drainage, plenty of moisture during fall, winter and spring, and to be dry during the summer. You can lose them during the summer in warm(hot?) wet soil due to water mold fungi.

Irises
In both my garden and the Devonian Botanic Garden Irises have done very well this year in spite of the weather. During June into this month they have flowered well. The genus Iris is a large genus of bulbous and rhizomatous perennials. Some 300 species and countless cultivars exist. The species are native to northern temperate regions. In Greek mythology Iris was a sister of the Harpies, messenger of the Juno, goddess of marriage. Iris walked between heaven and earth over a bridge made by a rainbow. Legend has it that whenever she walked on earth, her footprints bore flowers with as many colours as the rainbow. The name Iris as a Greek noun means rainbow. Irises were grown in the east long before the Christian era. A flower on the sphinx is considered to be an Iris, and another appears on a bas-relief of the time of the 18th Egyptian dynasty. Pliny also knew the Iris and praised its medicinal virtues. The Iris was also a favourite flower of the Moslems, who took it to Spain after their conquest in the 8th century. So the genus Iris has been loved and used for centuries; however, it did not win popularity as did others such as roses, carnations, lilies and others. Perhaps this resulted from mistaking Irises for lilies
