Christian Brothers of Ireland
An institute founded at Waterford, Ireland, in 1802, by Edmund Ignatius Rice , a merchant of that city. At the close of the eighteenth century a cloud of ignorance and misery hung over the Catholics of Ireland, the inevitable result of two centuries of dreadful penal enactments. During those unhappy years it was illegal either for a Catholic to educate his children as Catholics or for a teacher to undertake the work. The wretched state of the Catholic boys of Waterford excited the pity of Mr. Rice. He had some idea of joining a religious order on the Continent, but the miserable state of his surroundings decided his future course. The bishop of the diocese, the Most Reverend Dr. Hussey warmly approved of his intention and promised him every support. In 1820 came the crowning of Mr. Rice's work in the Apostolic Brief by which the Holy See constituted his little band of workers into a religious institute of the Church. The Christian Brothers was the first Irish order of men formally approved by a charter from Rome. Encouraged by this great privilege from the Holy See and blessed by a regular succession of excellent members, the order gradually spread not only through the principal Irish towns, but also to Liverpool, London, and other large centres in England. Having gradually strengthened itself in the British Isles during the remaining years of the nineteenth century, the institute ultimately extended its influence into distant countries. In 1868 a colony was sent to Australia and so fruitful was the effort that out of a community of four, a province has grown up containing about fifty establishments, schools, colleges, orphanages, and a flourishing novitiate. Another extension of great importance.was the opening of a school in St. John's, Newfoundland (1875). From the begining the efforts of the brothers there have been very successful, and through the zeal and energy of the Benevolent Irish Society there are now five large institutions under their management. Between the regimental schools on one side and those of

    Round Table History
The first Round Table was formed in Norwich, England in 1927. The founder, Louis Marchesi, was a young member of Norwich Rotary Club who felt a need existed for a club where the young business men of the town could gather on a regular basis. At their meetings they could exchange ideas, learn from the experiences of their colleagues and play a collective part in the civic life of Norwich. Within a year of inception the membership of this Round Table had grown to 85 and interest was being shown in establishing Round Tables elsewhere. From a very early stage it was agreed that Round Table would be a non-religious, non-political club and this has continued to this day. A second Round Table was established in Portsmouth and subsequent growth was rapid, with 125 Tables and a membership of 4,600 by the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. Round Table proved it had international appeal with the first overseas Table formed in Copenhagen in 1936. During the war years Round Table in Denmark continued to expand although in the British Isles activity was restricted and was in the nature of a 'holding operation'. After 1945 the pattern of growth was rapidly re-established with Tables being 'chartered' all over the UK. Today there are about 1,000 Tables with a membership of around 13,000. Round Table now flourishes in the majority of European countries, throughout Africa, the Middle East, India, Hong Kong, New Zealand and America. In fact Round Table is represented in every continent of the World.

    Trimble quits N.Ireland post
Trimble quit as first minister at midnight on Saturday BELFAST, Northern Ireland The troubled peace process in Northern Ireland is entering a new period of uncertainty following the resignation of first minister David Trimble. Trimble quit the post as expected at midnight on Saturday, carrying out a threat made weeks ago when he said he would step down unless the Irish Republican Army began handing over arms. The move came following minor clashes between Protestants and Catholics during a contentious loyalist parade in Belfast. The Protestant "marching season," during which historic victories over Catholics are celebrated, is an annual flashpoint for potential trouble. Trimble, leader of the Protestant Ulster Unionists, had submitted a post-dated resignation letter several weeks ago, and a Northern Ireland Office spokesman told Reuters early on Sunday: "As of midnight, David Trimble ceased to be First Minister of Northern Ireland's power-sharing government." IN-DEPTH Conflict and Hope in Northern Ireland Overview Decommissioning Marching season ... Quiz ANALYSIS Trimble, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize winner with Catholic leader John Hume for their part in the 1998 Good Friday peace accord, has asked Trade Minister Reg Empey, another Ulster Unionist, to take over his duties.

    The Archaeology of Ancient Ireland
Prehistoric Ireland. Little remains of Irish dwellings that predates the sixth century a.d. The abundance of wood and the difficulty of working stone with primitive tools undoubtedly accounts in part for this. In addition, the primitive farming practice of depleting the fields and then moving on to new ones made the laborious erection of a permanent stone dwelling unfeasible. Moreover, livestock constituted a major part of the wealth of the time, and the pasturing of flocks required considerable mobility, since the animals lived as foragers and were not, for the most part, fed grain from the laboriously worked fields. Furthermore, there were at that time no towns or even villages where artifacts might accumulate over a considerable period of time. At the most there were quasi-permanent encampments such as the royal sites of Cruachan and Emain Macha. Burial sites, however, are another matter. Court graves and passage graves can be found dating from as early 3,500 years b.c. ( Harbison 5-ff). A

Tyrone has a fine variety of scenery, mountains and gentle hills, glens and river valleys, moorland and little plains. There is some low land bordering Lough Neagh in the east, and in the river valleys in the north-west, but the rest of the county is hilly, and towards the County Derry border in the north and land piles up in the 2,000 foot peaks of the Sperrin Mountains. This is a wild yet welcoming land of forests, mountains and a rich historic heritage. For a change of pace (and a spot of shopping) savour the atmosphere of busy towns such as Omagh, Dungannon and Cookstown. Autumn is the perfect time to motor through the Sperrins and you can stop off on the way at An Cregan Visitor Centre for refreshments.

Northern Ireland mediator: No imminent breakthrough
November 3, 1999 Web posted at: 1:41 p.m. EST (1841 GMT) LONDON Mediator George Mitchell said Wednesday he does not see an imminent end to 30 years of sectarian strife in Northern Ireland , but plans to push ahead with the troubled peace process. The former U.S. senator said he hopes to finish his review of the peace drive by next week, but did not impose a specific deadline while speaking to reporters after meeting British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Mitchell, scheduled to brief President Clinton in Washington this week, plans to return to Belfast on the weekend. He is to meet with the parties the Ulster Unionists and Sinn Fein, the political wing of the Irish Republican Army on Monday and Tuesday.
