THE UNITED KINGDOM AND IRELAND
The UK and Ireland are regarded, for the purposes of this Genealogical Information Service, as being made up of England Ireland (i.e. Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland Wales , and Scotland , together with the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man . Together, these constitute the British Isles - which is a geographical term for a group of islands lying off the north-west coast of mainland Europe. (Legally, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are largely self governing, and are not part of the United Kingdom.) The Administrative Regions into which the UK and Ireland are divided have changed frequently in recent years. However, in line with normal genealogical practice, this Information Service is structured according to the counties as shown in these maps of England, Scotland and Wales , and of Ireland , i.e., as they were prior to the re-organisation that took place in 1974 (1975 for Scotland).

The War In Ireland
British Occupation Until 1922 Ireland as a whole was occupied by and ruled from Britain. This occupation began hundreds of years before but from the end of the 18th century a distinct Irish nationalism began to evolve. A series of rebellions broke out as well as agitation to alleviate the worst consequences of imperialist exploitation. This exploitation could be devastating as the Irish Famine or Great Hunger demonstrated. Following a rebellion in Easter 1916 and from 1918 and the War of Independence the country was partitioned. Here's the comments of the famous US anarchist Alexander Berkman on the rising and its aftermath. The War of Independence is portrayed in Irish history in nationalist terms but significant class struggle broke out particularly in Munster . A related event from that period was when the Trades Council declared a general strike in Limerick and took over the running of the city. This became known as the Limerick Soviet. Partition brought with it a carnival of reaction as the northern state became a highly sectarian state in which Catholics were treated as second class citizens as part of the state ideology. The southern state in turn developed into a Catholic version of the north, going as far as to give the Catholic church a special place in the constitution. In the north the working class was split along sectarian lines and sectarian riots resulted in workers living in sharply segregated communities. Despite this there were instances of workers coming together around specific issues, in 1933 for instance when the

Check the latest updates The old Irish writers commonly prefixed to their books or treatises a brief statement of "Place, Time, Person and Cause". The Place, Time, Person and Cause of Writing of these web pages are:- Their place is Cuskinny, Cobh, County Cork, Ireland; their time is the year of our lord one thousand nine hundred and ninety seven; the author is Brian Walsh; and the cause of writing is to give knowledge to those who desire to learn about the Old Irish People. These pages are based around information in an old book that I came across. Why is an old book more interesting than a modern study? Could it be that learning about our history has more to do with trying to understand a slightly alien culture rather than simply reading a set of facts/opinions. Everything about an old book - the style of presentation and prose, the texture of the pages and the binding, and the smell - is an aid to making that mental leap which can aid understanding. These pages are not a verbatim republication of the original. They take their structure and core data from the contents of the book. Entire pages may be summarised as a set of comments or omitted altogether. Material will be added gradually as links from the table of contents below.

History Situated on a 138 acre estate overlooking Lough Corrib, Glenlo Abbey was formerly the ancestral home of the Ffrench and Blake families, two of the fourteen Tribes that ruled over Galway for centuries. The Palmers, a well known merchant family lived in Glenlo Abbey for three generations. The original house dates back to 1740, and is still privately owned by the Bourke Family. A brief history of Galway Galway City is the capital of the province of Connacht. The origin of the place name Galway is uncertain, but it is known that among the ancient Irish , foreigners were called na Gall, hence the suggestion that Gaillimh or Galway, "the place of the foreigners", may have Stair garbh do Ghaillimh Is Gaillimh príomh –chathair Cúige Chonnacht. Níltear cinnte faoi bhunús an logainm Gaillimh, ach deirtear gur thug na sean-ghael "Na Gall" nó "Na Gaillibh" na daoine a tháinig as tíortha eile. Is iad na De Burgos a bhunaigh an áitriú aois deag, mar sin tá seans gur chuir na Gaeil "áit na Gaillimh" ar an láthair. Tá finnscéal ann chomh maith a deireann gur bháigh Galvia, iníon na taoiseach cailiúil, in abhann na Coirbe, agus gurb é ainm an bhanphrinsa bunús an log-ainm Gaillimh.

About Co-operation Ireland
History
Co-operation Ireland was founded in 1979 (as Co-operation North) in the midst of the ' troubles ' by Dr Brendan O'Regan a businessman and entrepreneur. At the time of Co-operation Ireland's establishment, the violence in Northern Ireland had been continuing for almost a decade. In Northern Ireland, relations between the catholic and protestant communities were at an all time low. In the Republic of Ireland, very few travelled to Northern Ireland or understood the complexity of the situation. Many courageous people protested and urged an end to the violence, but too many had become resigned to the continuing conflict as a way of life. It's in this context that Co-operation Ireland was founded. Its objective was to promote peace in a new and practical way. The charity would work to develop understanding and contact between the two parts of Ireland. Since then it has grown to be the largest peace charity in Ireland. Every year, thousands of young people, community workers, and business people take part in our programmes and in doing so learn more about each other.

Genealogy and Family History
The archives of the Church of Ireland, and particularly parochial registers of baptisms, marriages, and burials, are a primary source for genealogists and family historians. Although many registers were destroyed in the past, especially in the fire in the Public Record Office of Ireland in 1922, many others have survived in a number of custodies and are available to researchers. The staff of the RCB Library will be glad to offer advice on all queries concerning Church of Ireland archives and manuscripts and related printed and reference works. It should be stressed, however, that they will not undertake genealogical research on behalf of readers.

An index of articles on the labor history of Ireland. Covers the role of the working class in Irish history and the struggles of trade unions and other radical working class movements. This page was getting 2000 visits a month in April 2002. Loyalist myths: King Billy revisited The Orange Parades on and around the twelfth of July have long been a bone of serious contention and indeed a source of sectarian conflict in the Six Counties. Members of the Orange Order demand their unalienable right to march the Queen's highway, in commemoration of the victory of King William of Orange at the battle of the Boyne - a victory (as the Orangemen see it) for religious and civil liberty. The 1798 Rebellion In June of 1795 several Irish Protestants gathered on top of Cave Hill, overlooking Belfast. They swore " never to desist in our efforts until we had subverted the authority of England over our country and asserted our independence". Three years later 100,000 rose against Britain in the first Irish republican insurrection. Andrew Flood examines what they were fighting for and how they influenced modern Irish nationalism.

Irish Royal History
Ancient Legends
Ireland was first settled around 6000 BC by the prehistoric inhabitants of the British Isles. According to legend, several supernatural peoples the Fomorians, the Partholonians, the Nemedians, the Firbolgs, the Tuatha De Danann invaded Ireland in ancient times. Each group had its own royalty. The leader of the Partholonians was King Partholon. He had murdered his parents in an attempt to gain the throne of his native country. When that failed he came to Ireland with 49 followers and tried to conquer the ruling Fomorians. He was unsuccessful, and the Partholonians died of a plague. Next King Nemed arrived in Ireland from Scythia with his followers. 2,000 Nemedians died of plague, and the rest (including Nemed's sons Fergus, Iarnbonel and Starn) fled by sea after being defeated by the Fomorians under King Morca. The next two groups of invaders, the Firbolgs and the Tuatha De Danann, are said to have been descended from the Nemedians. The De Danann were powerful sorcerors. They possessed the Lia Fail, or Stone of Destiny, which roared when touched by the foot of the rightful king. The Tuatha De Danann overthrew the Fomorians and fought the Firbolgs for control of Ireland. Eventually the Firbolgs' King Eochaid, who is credited with establishing the first Irish laws, was killed in battle against the forces of the De Nananns' King Nuada. The defeated Firbolgs were left with only the province of Connaught.
