History may seem, as it did to Joyce's Stephen Daedalus, a nightmare from which we're trying to awake, but visitors to Ireland unfamiliar with historical conflicts will pass by some of the island's most worthwhile attractions-namely, the character of its people and their cultural productions-with little sense of what lies beyond their surface charm. The following should provide you with a taste of the complexities underlying modern Ireland.

Britain and Ireland had been one of Europe's hotspots long before the arrival of Conquerin' Will and his Stormin' Normans. Stonehenge is the most famous of the Stone Age sites, though next-door neighbor Avebury is bigger and less touristed. In Ireland's Co. Meath, the underground passages and 5000-year-old designs of the Boyne Valley still stump engineers. On Scotland's Isle of Lewis, the Callanish Stones reveal ancient knowledge of astronomy and math, while the burial tomb of Wales's Bryn Celli Ddu pops up in the middle of a modern farm. Before they declined and fell, the Romans had themselves an orgiastic time in old Britannia. Fabulous mosaics and a theater have been excavated at

Professor Peter Holmes of London believes that the first Bronze horns could have been cast in the North East of Ireland about 1500 B.C. These were quite small, relatively heavy and not highly decorated. Gradually as the culture surrounding them spread South through the Island, so too the casting expertise improved until the youngest instruments were made in the South West around 800 B.C. Because of this gradual evolvement, a wide variety of shape, design and size of horn were made. It appears that certain particular designs and tuning were indicative of the area where an instrument was made. Because a large number of originals survive it is likely that there were many horns played throughout Ireland in the Late Bronze Age. As a fragment was found in West Scotland and a drawing comes from Sussex in England it is also quite possible that a sibling culture existed there and there was most likely interaction between the two Islands.

A Brief history of Croquet in Ireland
In addition there are records that show that the game was played at Greenmount near Castlebellingham, Co Louth about 1834 and then introduced into Galway to be played at the Bishop of Tuam's palace and at Castlehacket, Tuam by a Mr Kirwan. The Kirwan family owned Chateau Kirwan producing the famous third growth clarets. In The Reader of 29th October 1864 it says "It was a positive fact that in the year 1834/35 the game was played in Kingstown (now Dun Laoghaire) near Dublin under the name of Croquet with implements similar to those now used". So it can be seen that the game was played here quite extensively for almost twenty years before it ever reached England. The first Irish Croquet Championship is recorded from 1871, and it was played again in 1873 and 1874 before seemingly lapsing. Indeed croquet did not prosper in England during the next 25 years, although there is patchy evidence that it may have in America and possibly also here, although the new craze of Lawn Tennis stole its thunder in the sporting press. The oldest existing club in Ireland is Rushbrooke Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, founded in 1882. Although croquet flourished in Ireland after its early days, most of the clubs were in the provinces and there were few in Dublin. The Irish Championships, resurrected in 1900, and the Gold Medals were held in Belfast, Cork or Fitzwilliam LTC in Dublin, on adapted or borrowed courts. Athenry could muster 12 courts for its tournament! Prichard records that there were clubs in Athenry, Athlone, Belfast, Birr, Carrickmines, Cork, Galway, Kennilworth Square in Dublin, Lismore, Malahide, Mallow, Mullingar, Muskerry, Newcastle (Co Down), Rushbrooke, Tullamore and Youghal. Home Rule was not yet won, but there was for a time a separate Irish branch of the Croquet Association. This was the heyday of croquet in Ireland, when players like Cyril Corbally, his brother Herbert, C.L. O Callaghan, Nina Coote and Peter Duff Mathews bore all before them both at home and in England. Carrickmines Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club became the home of the Championship in 1909.

    History
Dr. Brian Pringle founded the MS Society in Dublin in 1961. Dr. Pringle who was at that time a renowned General Practitioner with a great interest in Multiple Sclerosis. He was concerned about the disease but also its effects on those principally affected and indeed the other far-reaching side effects. Dr. Pringle went on to play a leading role in the formation of the International Federation of MS Societies, which today is the standard bearer for MS Societies across the world. The initial meeting, which was the consequence of a newspaper advertisement, was held in Lumsden Hall, in Dublin in February 1961. This meeting was well attended and momentum quickly gathered resulting in the first Annual General Meeting taking place on 8th June 1961. The Society moved into offices at 14, Merrion Sq. from where services would be administered for the next twenty years. The task of building the organisation into a vibrant support group was begun. The establishment of branches and the overall advocacy on behalf of persons and families affected by Multiple Sclerosis was to be the main thrust of the new Society. It is interesting to note that even back then there was mention of cutbacks, lack of sufficient services, home helps etc. At the end of 1982 the Society on celebrating 21 years of service made two momentous decisions. It decided to set up new office structures and to move to establish Community Services by introducing community workers to support the client base of the Society. The premises were purchased in Sandymount Green towards the end of 1982 with the aid of what was a substantial bequest at that time. The editor of MS News of the period wrote
