The influence of the Protestant ascendancy in Ireland reached its peak in the 18th century, politically due to the loss of voting and office-holding privileges of the Catholic majority. By 1778 the continued persecution of native Catholics resulted in their ownership of a meager 5% of Irish land. All was not negative during for Ireland during the 18th century because there were dramatic improvements to Ireland's infrastructure including the construction of road and canal networks to help facilitate a growing agricultural economy.
In the latter part of 18th century Ireland, rural protest movements were a common reaction to laws imposing new taxes, payment of tithes, enclosure of lands, high rents, etc. These movements became the precursors of more organized political movements in later years. In 1761 the Whiteboy movement began in the south. The Oakboys started in the north in 1763. In 1769 the Steelboy disturbances began in Antrim, and in 1785 the Rightboy movement started in Munster.
After France declared war on England in 1778, a Volunteer corps was set up to help defend Ireland (and ulitmately England) from possible invasion. The 'Volunteers' soon began to wield their organized military power to win political and economic concessions from England. The extra-parliamentary lobbying of the 'Volunteers' was instrumental in securing Free Trade for Ireland in 1780 and legislative independence in 1782.

History
The Celts, Iron Age warriors from eastern Europe, reached Ireland around 300 BC. They controlled the country for 1000 years and left a legacy of language and culture that survives today, especially in Galway, Cork, Kerry and Waterford. The Romans never reached Ireland, and when the rest of Europe sank into the decline of the Dark Ages after the fall of the empire, the country became an outpost of European civilisation, particularly after the arrival of Christianity, between the 3rd and 5th centuries. During the 8th century Viking raiders began to plunder Ireland's monasteries. The Vikings settled in Ireland in the 9th century, and formed alliances with native families and chieftains. They founded Dublin, which in the 10th century was a small Viking kingdom. The English arrived with the Normans in 1169, taking Wexford and Dublin with ease. The English king, Henry II, was recognised by the pope as Lord of Ireland and he took Waterford in 1171, declaring it a royal city. Anglo-Norman lords also set up power bases in Ireland, outside the control of England. English power was consolidated under Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The last thorn in the English side was Ulster, final outpost of the Irish chiefs, in particular Hugh O'Neill, earl of Tyrone. In 1607 O'Neill's ignominious departure, along with 90 other chiefs, left Ulster leaderless and primed for the English policy of colonisation known as 'plantation' - an organised and ambitious expropriation of land and introduction of settlers which sowed the seeds for the division of Ulster still in existence today.

The island of Ireland consists of a large central lowland of limestone with a relief of hills and several coastal mountains. The mountain ridges of the south comprise old red sandstone separated by limestone river valleys. Elsewhere granite predominates, except in the north east which is covered by a basalt plateau. The central plain contains glacial deposits of clay and sand. It is interrupted by low hills and has large areas of bog and numerous lakes. Key events in Northern Ireland history

Ireland has been divided administratively since 1922 when the Irish Free State was formed 12th century First involvement by England in Irish affairs when the Earl of Pembroke, known as Strongbow, intervenes in a local dispute in Leinster in 1170 . King Henry II lands the following year. English expansion continues and in 1177, Ulster is conquered by soldiers led by John de Courcy. 14th/15th centuries English expansion halted and then reversed. By the end of the period, English possessions are limited to a small area around Dublin. the 'Pale'. Everything outside is regarded as savage, giving rise to the expression 'beyond the pale'. 16th century First Henry VIII and then Elizabeth I take an increasing interest in Ireland. Colonisation increases again, sparking off several rebellions late in the century. The greatest of the revolts, led by Ulsterman Hugh O'Neill, the Earl of Tyrone, reaches its high point with victory over the English at the Yellow Ford in 1598, but he is defeated three years later at Kinsale and surrenders. 17th century Start of the 'Plantation of Ulster' - the systematic colonisation of Donegal, Tyrone, Derry, Armagh, Cavan and Fermanagh by settlers from England and Scotland.

Ireland History
The genial nature of the Irish is surprising considering their country's history of conflict: The island has drawn wave after wave of invaders. Celtic tribes from Europe led one of the early onslaughts, arriving around 300 BC and wresting control from the people who were already living on the island. The Celts were gradually converted to Christianity beginning in the AD 300s (St. Patrick being a prime motivator), and during the Dark Ages, scholars based at Irish monasteries helped preserve important writings from throughout western Europe. Viking plunderers menaced Ireland beginning around AD 700, and some of the Norse invaders eventually settled on the island. Three centuries later, English warriors intervened in a dispute between two Irish kings, beginning England's long involvement in Ireland. Religion played a key role in the struggles: The majority of the Irish were Catholic, and they were often at odds with their Protestant English rulers. The most bitter battles occurred in the mid 1600s, when Oliver Cromwell reasserted English control by shedding much Irish blood, seizing the lands of his opponents and desecrating Catholic cathedrals all across the land.

Irish History
Periods of Isolation and Hardship

The island's early history is intertwined in mythology. One mythical account has the tribe of the Fomorians , a race of demonic giants, as the first to inhabit the coasts of Ireland. Another early people mentioned were the Partholons, who after many battles with the Fomorians were killed by a deadly plague. After them came the Nemeds, who in their very first battle were defeated and enslaved. The third wave of invaders, the Firbolgs, were said to have finally subdued the Fomorians and managed to live peacefully with them.
Ireland in the Norman Empire
After a period of peace, the Tuatha De Danann, the Irish race of gods, arrived. They conquered the Firbolgs, but dealt more subtly with the Fomorians, eventually destroying their dominance in the second battle of Mag Tuireadh. The Fomorians were given the province of Connacht, and were even allowed to marry some of the Tuatha De. During the ninth and tenth centuries, the progress of Irish civilization was checked by the incursions of the Scandinavians, which began toward the close of the 8th century and continued for more than two centuries. The Vikings established settlements on the east coast of Ireland and conducted raids in the interior until their signal overthrow at the Battle of Clontarf, near Dublin, in 1014, by the Irish king Brian Boru.
During the 13th century, various Anglo-Norman adventurers succeeded in firmly establishing themselves in Ireland, either by assisting or suppressing native clans. The descendants of the most powerful Anglo-Norman settlers in Ireland gradually became identified with the native Irish, whose language, habits, and laws they adopted to an increasing extent. To counteract this, the Anglo-Irish Parliament passed, in 1366, the Statute of Kilkenny, decreeing excommunication and heavy penalties against all those who followed the custom of, or allied themselves with, the native Irish. Numerous religious and cultural battles followed during the Norman period, when Ireland was ruled by English nobility .

These local taxes, called the County Cess, were based on townland units. Successive committees of the House of Commons debated this problem and found that, although the names and outlines of these divisions were assumed to be well known, the acreages and rateable valuations were doubtful. Finally, on the recommendations of the Spring Rice Committee, a survey of all Ireland at a scale of 6 inches to one mile was authorized by the British Parliament in 1824. On the 22 June 1824, the day after the report was signed, Lt Col Thomas Colby was chosen to undertake this task. Prior to this the Ordnance Survey's brief had been topographic mapping at smaller scales and this departure marked the introduction of the large scale mapping that was to become a major task. Colby immediately began the trigonometrical survey of Ireland.
