http://www.emeraldtiger.com/general/geog.htm
Geography and climate of Ireland The geography of Ireland has often been related to that of a saucer the edges representing the the granite mountains and cliffs which are found predominately in the coastal areas whilst the central area of Ireland is much less mountainous, It is in these flatter areas that the larger rivers widen out to form large loughs. Most of the countries running water is made up from alkaline rivers before joining the sea via winding marshy estuaries. Ireland has a temperate, humid climate due to the action of the prevailing southwesterly winds and the warming effects of the Gulf Stream having the effect of keeping the country "warm" in winter. The combined effect of these factors is that whilst sharing similar latitude with other countries the climate swings between winter and summer are not as severe. Snow when it does fall rarely lasts long and is usually "Here one day and gone the next", possible exceptions being the higher mountains where snow will melt much slower. Where Ireland does differ is in the general weather which would best be described as "Changeable" one such expression to confirm this is "You get all four seasons in the one Day here". The mid East of Ireland generally receives less that 30 inches of rain with the South and West can receive over 80 inches per year. over 6 feet of rain !!. About Contents Feedback Search ... Home

Welcome to the GIS Laboratory at Trinity College, Dublin. Introduction
The GIS Laboratory was established in 1992 as a leading centre for GIS education in Ireland. This coincided with the appointment of Dr. Krysia Rybaczuk krybczuk@tcd.ie as a New Blood GIS lecturer in the Department of Geography and the Environmental Science Unit (Now the Trinity Centre for the Environment). Research into GIS at Trinity College, Dublin has been well established for over a decade. In addition to the GIS laboratory work has been carried out in a variety of research units. These include the Natural Resources Development Center (NRDC), Department of Geology and the Small Area Health Research Unit (SAHRU), Department of Community Health and General Practice. Over the past five years, the GIS Laboratory has also rapidly become one of the leading centres for GIS education in the Republic of Ireland. Currently there are a wide variety of GIS courses taught within the various college programs, both at

    Geography
Standard output will be available for a range of areas as defined on Census day 2001. The 566 Wards used for the 1991 Census were created following the Boundary Commission Review in 1984. They do not compare very well with the 582 wards used for the 2001 Census which were created following the 1992 Boundary Commission review as there is significant differences between the sets. For 1992, many of the 1984 individual ward boundaries were changed, others were deleted and subsumed into existing or new wards and some were renamed. The only major change in District Council boundaries between the two Censuses relates to Banbridge and Newry and Mourne District Council areas where as a result of the Local Government District Boundary change of 1992 the ward of Rathfriland, in effect, moved from Newry and Mourne Local Government District to Banbridge Local Government District. Area types The main types of existing areas which the Census recognises are: Ward, Local Government District, Health and Social Services Boards, Education and Library Boards, Parliamentary Constituency and NUTS level 3. All have boundaries which are currently consistent with one another although they are subject to change over time.

    Introduction
    • This overview of coordinate systems for georeferencing provides a brief description of local and global systems for use in precise positioning, navigation, and geographic information systems for the location of points in space. There are many different coordinate systems, based on a variety of geodetic datums, units, projections, and reference systems in use today. As an example, this overview often uses the position of one of the thousands of geodetic control points in the United States, the star in the hand of the Goddess of Liberty atop the Capitol building in Austin, Texas. The 1916 Easter Rising
The Easter Rebellion, was an armed uprising of Irish nationalists against the rule of Great Britain in Ireland. The uprising occurred on Easter Monday, April 24, 1916, and centred mainly in Dublin. The chief objectives were the attainment of political freedom and the establishment of an Irish republic. Centuries of discontent, marked by numerous rebellions, preceded the uprising. The new crisis began to develop in September 1914, following the outbreak of World War I, when the British government suspended the recently enacted Home Rule Bill, which guaranteed a measure of political autonomy to Ireland. Suspension of the bill stimulated the growth of the Citizen Army, an illegal force of Dublin citizens organised by the labour leader Jim Larkin (died 1948) and the socialist James Connolly (1870-1916); of the Irish Volunteers, a national defence body; and of the extremist Sinn Féin . The uprising was planned by leaders of these organisations, among whom were the British consular agent Sir Roger David Casement, the educator Padhraic Pearse (1879-1916), and the poet Thomas MacDonagh (1878-1916).

    Location
Ireland (Éire), is located in Far Western Europe, in the North Atlantic Ocean, and separated from Great Britain by Saint George's Channel on the south-east, the Irish Sea on the east, and the North Channel on the north-east. Politically, the island is divided into Northern Ireland, a constituent part of Great Britain, and the Republic of Ireland, formerly Eire. The island is divided into four historical provinces-Connaught (Connacht), Leinster, Munster, and Ulster-and administrative units called counties. The Republic of Ireland consists of Connaught, Leinster, and Munster provinces, totaling 23 counties, and in the north, 3 counties of Ulster Province. Northern Ireland consists of 26 districts, the remainder of Ulster Province. The area of the island is 84,431 sq km (32,599 sq mi) (Republic of Ireland, 70,283 sq km/27,136 sq mi; Northern Ireland, 14,148 sq km/5463 sq mi). In a northern and southern direction, the maximum length of Ireland is 486 km (302 mi); its extreme width is 280 km (174 mi). Malin Head, at latitude 55º 27' north, and Mizen Head, at latitude 51º 27' north, are, respectively, the northernmost and southernmost points on the island; easternmost and westernmost points are demarcated by longitude 5º 25' west and longitude 10º 30' west.
