Geography
The island of Ireland is the westernmost and second largest of the British Isles, in the North Atlantic Ocean. It is separated from Great Britain by Saint George's Channel on the southeast, the Irish Sea on the east, and the North Channel on the northeast. Politically, the island is divided into Northern Ireland , a constituent part of Great Britain, and the Republic of Ireland , formerly Eire. The island is divided into four historical provinces? Connaught (Connacht), Leinster, Munster, and Ulster—and administrative units called counties. The Republic of Ireland consists of Connaught, Leinster, and Munster provinces, totaling 23 counties, and in the north, 3 counties of Ulster Province. Northern Ireland consists of 26 districts, the remainder of Ulster Province. The area of the island is 84,431 sq km (32,599 sq mi) (Republic of Ireland, 70,283 sq km/27,136 sq mi; Northern Ireland, 14,148 sq km/5463 sq mi). The population of the island (1981) is 4,925,364, including the Republic of Ireland (3,443,405).
In a northern and southern direction, the maximum length of Ireland is 486 km (302 mi); its extreme width is 280 km (174 mi). Malin Head, at latitude 55?7' north, and Mizen Head, at latitude 51?7' north, are, respectively, the northernmost and southernmost points on the island; easternmost and westernmost points are demarcated by longitude 5?5' west and longitude 10?0' west.

Ireland - Geography
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Think of something greengreen grass, green trees, or maybe you have a favorite green shirt. Have you ever seen an emerald? It is a beautiful and expensive green stone. Now imagine an entire country colored green! Ireland is an island country in the northern Atlantic Ocean. Much of the country is covered in green, grassy fields. That's why Ireland is called the Emerald Isle.
Ireland is covered in grass, a few forests, and bogs. Bogs are very wet patches of land covered by moss. Sometimes bogs are very easy to see, sometimes not. If you were to walk around parts of western Ireland, you might be surprised to feel the ground moving under your feet. It would probably mean you're walking on a bog.

Counties and Provinces of Ireland Main Menu Geography Map of Counties Map of Provinces ... List of Counties and Individual County Maps Ireland was divided up into counties by the English crown around 400 years ago. Since then, the counties have remained largely unchanged. In Northern Ireland they survive merely as curiosities - not having any actual purpose any more. In the Republic of Ireland, however, these historic divisions are still used as the basis of local government. The map below shows the 32 counties in the island of Ireland (26 in the Republic of Ireland and 6 in Northern Ireland) as well as some of the major towns (in italics). The Four Provinces In ancient times, Ireland was divided into provinces, each ruled by a King. These provinces were dynamic and their borders changed all the time. Today, when Irish talk about the provinces of Ireland, they mean Leinster, Ulster, Munster and Connaught. However, historically there were more than 4 provinces: others included Breifne [between Ulster and Connaught], Oriel [around county Armagh] and Meath [the northern half of Leinster]. The map below shows the 4 provinces of Ireland as they currently exist. The borders of these provinces coincide exactly with the county boundaries. County Details Details of each of Ireland's counties are given in the tables below.

The Republic of Ireland's Flag Maps
    Flags
The Republic of Ireland's flag is made of three equal-sized rectangles of orange, white, and green (this type of flag is called a tricolor ). The flag is twice as wide as it is tall. The green side is by the flagpole. This flag was first used in 1848. The green color on the flag represents the native people of Ireland (most of whom are Roman Catholic). The orange color represents the British supporters of William of Orange who settled in Northern Ireland in the 17th century (most of whom are Protestant). The white in the center of the flag represents peace between these two groups of people. Related Pages: Irish Flag Printout/Quiz Learn about and test your knowledge of the Irish Flag.

    The Geography of the Island
The island of Ireland is situated in the extreme north-west of Europe between 51.5 and 55.5 degrees north latitude and between 5.5 and 10.5 degrees west longitude. The Irish Sea to the east, which separates Ireland from Britain, is from 17.6 to 192 km (11 to 120 miles) wide and has a maximum depth of about 200 metres (650 feet). Around the other coasts the shallow waters of the Continental Shelf are rather narrow and depths increase rapidly into the Atlantic Ocean. The Republic of Ireland covers 70,282 sq. km (27,136 sq.mi.) and consists of Munster, Leinster, Connacht and three counties of Ulster, making a total of 26 counties governed by The Republic. Northern Ireland is only 5,500 square miles in area - about the size of Yorkshire or Connecticut - and is made up of the remaining 6 counties of Ulster. The island comprises a large central lowland of limestone with a relief of hills surrounded by a discontinuous border of coastal mountains which vary greatly in geological structure. The mountain ridges of the south are composed of old red sandstone separated by limestone river valleys. Granite predominates in the mountains of Galway, Mayo and Donegal in the west and north-west and in Counties Down and Wicklow on the east coast, while a basalt plateau covers much of the north-east of the country. The central plain, which is broken in places by low hills, is extensively covered with glacial deposits of clay and sand. It has considerable areas of bog and numerous lakes. The island has seen at least two general glaciations and everywhere ice-smoothed rock, mountain lakes, glacial valleys and deposits of glacial sand, gravel and clay mark the passage of the ice.

NORTHERN IRELAND Although, this information may not be needed for gathering information concerning genealogy, I thought it may be beneficial for people to understand where our ancestors came from, and what it is like in Northern Ireland in general. I never really realized how small Northern Ireland actually is. Nor, all the agricultural and industrial resources it has. The shorelines of Northern Ireland (NI) are characterized by many irregularities. It consists of mountains surrounding Lough Neagh (about 150 square miles/390 suare kilometers) on it’s northwest, northeast, and southeast. Lough Neagh is the largest lake in the British Isles. The highest point in the country is Slieve Donard, a peak in the Mourne Mountains, it is 2796 feet/852 meters tall. I was really amazed by the climate that NI has. It is a temperate climate with mild winters and cool summers. The westerly winds are responsible for this climate. The average normal temperature is 50 degrees F/10 degrees C. In July, you may find the temperature 58 degrees F./14.4 degrees C., or in January it will be about 40 degrees F./4.4 degrees C. Annual precipitation frequently exceeds 40 inches/1016 millimeters; therefore, you can expect moderate to heavy rainfall. Humidity is high.

    Background
Celtic tribes settled on the island in the 4th century B.C. Invasions by Norsemen that began in the late 8th century were finally ended when King Brian BORU defeated the Danes in 1014. English invasions began in the 12th century and set off more than seven centuries of Anglo-Irish struggle marked by fierce rebellions and harsh repressions. A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for 26 southern counties; six northern (Ulster) counties remained part of the United Kingdom. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland, known as the Good Friday Agreement and approved in 1998, is currently being implemented.
