OAKLAND, Calif., April 7 (AScribe Newswire) Following is a summary of news sources who are willing to discuss issues related to the status and treatment of POWs.. Each of these organizations issued news releases on the AScribe newswire. This summary of sources is provided by AScribe as a service for the media. David S. Weissbrodt / University of Minnesota Weissbrodt, law professor and an expert in international human rights law, can discuss human rights and prisoners of war. "It's very important that the Geneva Convention article on prisoners of war be complied with by all parties to this conflict," he says. "There have been some pretty visible apparent violations of the POW convention." The most egregious case so far involved Iraq parading American POWs before the media, but there have been violations on both sides, he says. One year on the human rights situation remains dire Introduction
A year after US-led forces launched war on Iraq, the promise of improved human rights for Iraqis remains far from realized. Most Iraqis still feel unsafe in a country ravaged by violence. Every day Iraqis face threats to their lives and security. Violence is endemic, whether in the form of attacks by armed groups, abuses by the occupying forces, or violence against women. Millions of people have suffered the consequences of destroyed or looted infrastructure, mass unemployment and uncertainty about their future. And there is little or no confidence that those responsible for past and present human rights abuses will be brought to justice. There have been some welcome positive developments in the country, especially in the field of freedom of expression, association and assembly. Dozens of non-government organizations (NGOs), including organizations focusing on women's rights, have been established, more than 80 daily and weekly newspapers are published and scores of political parties and religious organizations have emerged.

Talking Points on Iraq
From the Campaign to End the Cycle of Violence (North Carolina)
January 31, 2003 There is no credible evidence that Iraq has nuclear weapons (this was confirmed this week by the Jan. 27 report to the UN Security Council) or is engaged in reviving its nuclear program. Saddam Hussein may have hidden chemical or biological weapons (most of it originally supplied by US and other western nations), but no means to deliver them (the longest range of any discovered missiles is 180 or so kilometers, about 120 miles). There is no evidence that Saddam Hussein has the will or the capacity to attack the US. Iraq is a battered, weak nation after being routed in the Gulf War and under embargo since. UN inspectors destroyed a large percentage of Iraq’s military capacity during the 1990s. There is no credible evidence of Iraqi ties to Al Qaeda, despite Bush Administration allegations. Al Qaeda considers Saddam Hussein to be an enemy, a secularist who has betrayed Islam. Saddam Hussein is certainly a cruel dictator, who was just as cruel when the US supported him in the brutal Iran/Iraq war of the 1980s.

Iraq Security Council Economic Sanctions Vienna, 21 January 2000/P/K/16705c-is The President of the I.P.O. pointed to the fact that Paragraph 33 of the resolution falls back even behind earlier resolutions in only vaguely offering the prospect of suspending sanctions instead of lifting them as provided for in Paragraph 22 of resolution 687 (1991) in regard to Iraqi exports. This new resolution has deliberately obscured what is required of Iraq even for the mere suspension of sanctions. The resolution's deliberate lack of precision is likely to produce more tensions between Iraq and the major Western protagonists, the United States and the U.K., Dr. Koechler said. It continues the policy of taking the Iraqi people hostage for the pursuit of the political strategies of these two Western powers. jus cogens of general international law. Nowhere is this truer than in the area of civil rights, where unions were the indispensable actors in mobilizing the grassroots and political power to win most civil rights battles in state and national legislatures. As importantly, they were the vehicles for economically and socially empowering millions of black workers to be able to fight for their rights more broadly. Yes, many union locals, especially in the building trades, were racist themselves in treatment of black members, but it's too easy to look at the partial failures of unions to live up to their ideals while ignoring the forest of civil rights leadership most unions and union leadership took. It is from the higher ideals unions publicly set for themselves that they failed, since throughout most of this period, they were far more integrated and more actively involved in fighting segregation than almost any major institution in society.
