Lunaville Main August 30, 2003 AN IRAQ GEOGRAPHY LESSON Many of you are not too concerned about where soldiers’ lives have been lost. After all, the fact that a life was lost at all is tragedy enough. But for people like myself who take great interest in “the bloody details”, the place of death takes on great importance. I make it a point to be sure I understand at least approximately where each death occurred. It’s a good way to spot trends in the action. Unfortunately, relying on the DOD and CENTCOM for accurate details in this regard can be a lost cause, as Yazid from Austria and I have been discussing this past week. Take this example. CENTCOM reported on Aug. 26th that a soldier died in an attack on a convoy that day “near the town of Hamariyah And the press faithfully regurgitated that fact. But try to find “Hamariyah” on a map of Iraq. Having trouble? Yazid managed to dig up a “Hamaria” just south of Kirkuk  while I had no luck at all. So I began a search of the media reports. And luckily I stumbled upon two press items that mentioned “Hamariyah’s” location as being 16 miles (25 km) northwest of Baghdad. Eagerly, I returned to my maps. 16 miles northwest of Baghdad  hmmmm  no Hamariyah. There was, however, a “ Hamamiyat ”. Great.
