Investor Relations The culture-war president With Iraq still a mess, Team Bush is switching battlefields to start screaming about Sodom and Gomorrah. By Arianna Huffington "I'm a war president," George Bush told us. But as the body count in Iraq continues to rise, the president's approval rating plummets, and the furor over phantom WMD, sexed-up intel, and Bush's spotty Air National Guard service refuses to go away, it appears Karl Rove is planning a small rewrite for his candidate: "I'm a culture war president." No Quick Democracy in Iraq
by Patrick Basham Patrick Basham is senior fellow in the Center for Representative Government at the Cato Institute. It's clear now that Iraq will not transform into a democracy anytime soon. The uninspiring, but inescapable, fact is that Saddam Hussein never stood between the Iraqi people and Western-style democracy. The Iraqi dictator was justifiably despised by most of his fellow countrymen. A Saddam-free Iraq may have been a little wealthier; it may even have been a little freer. But it would not have been a liberal democracy without Saddam, and it will not be a democracy significantly faster now. The end of Saddam as a political leader does nothing to alter the fundamental incompatibility of Iraqi society with liberal democracy, or to alter the nature of democratization, as experienced around the globe over the past several decades. It is very hard, therefore, to be optimistic about the chances of post-Saddam Iraq establishing a stable, liberal democratic political system, at least in the short-to-medium-term. Such pessimism stems from an appreciation of, first, Iraqi history and, second, what causes democracy to flourish in a society. Iraq has never had a genuine democracy in its modern history. Since its establishment by the British in the 1920s, Iraq has witnessed the rise and fall of successive brutal authoritarian regimes, competing ruthlessly for power and resources.

GIs in Iraq tote in digital pop culture and share it
Fascinating piece in today's NYT about digital media sharing among enlisted personnel in Iraq. Would entertainment industry groups or at some point, our government prosecute these soldiers for piracy? At the Kirkush Military Training Base in the eastern Iraqi desert less than 15 miles from the frontier with Iran, an hour's wait for a helicopter was spent listening to Marilyn Manson, Eminem and Shania Twain before the Black Hawk fired up its turbines and somebody back in the barracks, as if on cue and with a dark sense of irony, cranked up Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven." The songs came from a European satellite music channel and a communal computer where 12.8 gigabites of tunes had been downloaded for sharing on MP3's. The rule was simple: Take some music, add some music. "Any time anybody on the team gets a new CD, they load it in, so we stay pretty current," said Sgt. Thomas R. Mena. As the new CD from Tool blasted in the barracks, Sergeant Mena scrolled through the computerized music library, which ranged from Abba and AC/DC, through Limp Biskit and Metallica and on to Van Halen and ZZ Top. Emigres from West Africa who joined the Army for citizenship and career training arrived with the latest Nigerian pop CD's. Chinese-Americans hauled along hot Hong Kong video imports.

    98. Cultural Heritage Of Iraq: Site Overview
archaeological team made history, discovering the rich and complex Sumerian cultureat the Museum in London, and one half sent to the National Museum in iraq.
    http://www.museum.upenn.edu/new/research/iraq/overview.shtml
    An Introduction to this Site
"The looting of the Iraq National Museum and other art and archaeology museums in Iraq is a tragedy of vast proportions to the Iraqi people, and to all those who care about understanding our shared human heritage. In the days, weeks and months ahead, museums and governments alike must do everything possible to assess the damage and stop the flow of stolen artifacts out of Iraq. This Museum has joined with others in a growing international effort to salvage and re-establish the collection."
Dr. Jeremy A. Sabloff, The Williams Director

The land between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, ancient Mesopotamia, modern-day Iraq, is often called "the cradle of civilization." Much of the long and impressive archaeological record of this region's rich cultural and artistic history resided in the National Museum of Iraq in Baghdaduntil the tragic looting that took place in mid-April. It will be a long time before the full extent of the loss is known.
In response to the looting of Iraq's antiquities, University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (UPM) has launched this web feature, in order to educate the public about Iraq's ancient past and to offer the latest updates on a tragic situation that continues to develop. This site features a wide variety of resources, including the latest online news stories, official responses to the situation, and an online exhibition of photographs from the Museum's Photographic Archives, highlighting the Museum's rich history of archaeological research in Iraq. These photographs are available as prints to the public for personal and/or scholarly use. (*Note: the photographs on the right of artifacts known to have been in Iraq's National Museum are not available as prints.)

In fact, thousands of Palestinians who have served time in Israeli prisons and detention centres see striking similarities between the Israeli treatment of prisoners and American treatment of Iraqi detainees. In some cases, the torture technique or form of mistreatment is almost identical, some former Palestinian prisoners told Aljazeera.net. Hisham Abd al-Razzaq is a Palestinian Authority minister in charge of overseeing and catering for more than 7000 Palestinian prisoners in Israel, many of them interned without charge or trial.
