aka Irangate
The Constitution contains a one-sentence definition of treason: Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. If you're an American pondering whether to sell missiles to a foreign power with a proven history of sponsoring terrorism against the United States, you probably ought to think twice. It could reasonably be argued that this would be giving aid to an enemy of the U.S., and therefore expose you to a charge of treason. Seems pretty straightforward, doesn't it? And yet this is precisely what President Ronald Reagan did. But did he get impeached? Nope. The American people decided that if the President was paving a road with his very best intentions, it didn't really matter where that road ultimately led. Who cares about a few broken laws? And in the wake of overwhelming public apathy, the whole affair was quietly set aside.
Illegal Arms for Terrorists

Once a major empire in its own right, it has been overrun frequently and has had its territory altered throughout the centuries. Invaded by Arabs, Seljuk Turks, Mongols, and othersand often caught up in the affairs of larger powersIran has always reasserted its national identity and has developed as a distinct political and cultural entity.
Archeological findings have placed knowledge of Iranian prehistory at middle paleolithic times (100,000 years ago). The earliest sedentary cultures date from 18,000-14,000 years ago. The sixth millennium B.C. saw a fairly sophisticated agricultural society and proto-urban population centers. Many dynasties have ruled Iran, the first of which was under the Achaemenians (559-330 B.C.), a dynasty founded by Cyrus the Great. After the Hellenistic period (300-250 B.C.) came the Parthian (250 B.C.-226 A.D.) and the Sassanid (226-651) dynasties.
The seventh century Arab-Muslim conquest of Iran was followed by conquests by the Seljuk Turks, the Mongols, and Tamerlane. Iran underwent a revival under the Safavid dynasty (1502-1736), the most prominent figure of which was Shah Abbas. The conqueror Nadir Shah and his successors were followed by the Zand dynasty, founded by Karim Kahn, and later the Qajar (1795-1925) and the Pahlavi dynasties (1925-1979).

Abadan - H istory Arabic 'ABBADAN, city, extreme southwestern of Iran. The city is situated in Khuzestan, part of the oil-producing region of Iran. Abadan lies on an island of the same name along the eastern bank of the Shatt Al-'Arab (river), 33 miles (53 km) from the Persian Gulf. The city thus lies along Iran's border with Iraq. Abadan Island is bounded on the west by the Shatt Al-'Arab and on the east by the Bahmanshir, which is an outlet of the Karun River. The island is 42 miles (68 km) long and from 2 to 12 miles (3 to 19 km) wide. Reputedly founded by a holy man, 'Abbad, in the 8 th century, Abadan was a prosperous coastal town in the 'Abbasid period and was known for its salt and woven mats. But the extension of the delta of the Shatt Al-'Arab by silt deposition caused the coast of the Persian Gulf to gradually recede from Abadan. By the time the town was visited by the Arab geographer Ibn Battutah in the 14 th century, it was described as little more than a large village in a flat, salty plain.

Kerman - H istory Kerman is as old as history. It is believed, that it has been founded as early as the 3 rd century by Ardeshir I, founder of the Sassanian dynasty. Historical documents refer to Kerman as "Karmania," "Kermania" and "Zhermanya," which means bravery and combat. Geographers have recorded Kerman's ancient name as "Go'asheer" (Bardesheer). In Islamic time, Kerman was one of the important cultural centres of Iran. Today the city (1991 pop. 311,643) is the capital of Kerman province, in east-central Iran. It is noted for making and exporting carpets. Cotton textiles and goats-wool shawls are also manufactured. Kerman has had very little peace in its history. From the 7 th century, it has been ruled by Arabs, Buyids, the Seljuks, Turkmens and Mongols in turn until the Qajar dynasty, when it was a victim of the barbaric Aqa Mohammad Khan. Throughout its history, Kerman has been chosen as the capital by different kings, but it was Ganj Ali Khan (1005 to 1034 A.D) during the Safavid era, who brought about the city's prosperity. Kerman was prospering under the Safavid dynasty (16 th century) and suffering under the Afghans (17 th century). In 1794 its greatest disaster occurred: Aga Muhammad Khan, shah of Persia, ravaged the city by

Comprehensive History of the Jews of Iran
    Habib Levy
Translated from the Persian by George W. Maschke
The history of the Jews of Iran is one of the most important chapters of Jewish history, yet it is also the most obscure, because little of it has been published. Considering the vastness of the Persian Empire during ancient times, Iran must be reckoned second only to Israel in importance to the study of Jewish history.
After the Assyrian onslaught, the ten lost tribes were moved to the east, toward the Persian Empire. Babylon, the former hub of Judaism, was an Iranian province for more than a thousand years, including the period during which the Talmud was written. Indeed, Iranian cultural influences are manifest in the Babylonian Talmud, which is, in essence, an "Iranian Talmud."
Iran, where the Jews are living for over 2700 years, is the land of the beginning of Diaspora. Based on historical facts, the first Jews exiled from their homeland settled in Iran and from there they moved to other countries such as India, China and Russia.
Iran is the birthplace of the Karaite movement in Judaism which spread throughout the world. During the Middle Ages, Iranian Jews were active contributors to the scholarship of the Islamic world an important factor in the European Renaissance.

All of this happened in the Iran-Contra scandal. Many like to brush off notions of vast conspiracies, saying how could so many people keep a secret? This affair was ongoing for five years without a peep from any participants! The Kennedy assassination was, after all, in the end, a one day event. But this went on for five years before story started coming out, and it involved thousands of participants. When people want to keep something secret, they can. It was a freak accident that brought this story into the mainstream, the downing of Eugene Hasenfus. BRIEF HISTORY OF THE TUDEH PARTY OF IRAN
      Written by: M. Omidvar
ABOUT THIS PAMPHLET The labour and communist movement in Iran is 71 years old, and this includes the 51 years of the of the Tudeh Party of Iran, the party of the Iranian working class. Since its formation the party has been the main target of attacks by internal reaction and the imperialist forces, who were dominating the political life of the country in order to plunder its vast natural resources. Our party, during all these 5 decades, has been allowed to operate legally for only a few years. The party has been outlawed by various governments and Tudeh members sent to torture chambers and firing squads; yet the party has relentlessly continued its struggle, remaining loyal to the lofty ideals of peace, democracy and socialism. This booklet tries to give a historical , rather an analytical account of the past 5 decades of the struggle by our party. In trying to paint the history with the colour of truth, the booklet has avoided going into a deep political analysis of the party's past policies and its mistakes. The booklet has relied heavily on party documents in order to avoid subjective views of the events. The present compilation is therefore a brief history of the life and struggle of the TPI which has been prepared from a mass of Party publications and documents. Let history speak for itself, since the ghosts of the past know more about the secrets of history than some vengeful analysts of today. What lies now in the hands of the readers is an attempt to sketch parts of the proud struggle of the Tudeh Party of Iran in its 51 years of life, and not a complete historical account.

To the North, it borders on former Soviet Central Asian countries including Armenia Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and the Caspian Sea. It also borders on Afghanistan and Pakistan in the East, and Turkey to the West. Click for large map Iran has a semi-arid climate for the most part, but it is extremely rich in natural resources. In particular, it has nearly 10% of the worlds proven oil reserves and nearly 16% of the worlds gas reserves. Iran has the second largest gas reserves in the world. Additionally, it has considerable quantities of fairly low grade uranium. However, poor economic planning, sanctions by Western countries, low literacy, high birthrates and a long and bloody war with Iraq have kept Iran poor, with a GDP of about $7000 and unemployment of about 16%. In recent years, government programs that encourage family planning and significant emigration have reduced the rate of population increase to about 1% a year. Birth rate is now about 17 per thousand, comparable to Western industrialized countries, and literacy is up to 79%. Early Modern Times - After the death, in 1779, of Mohammad Karim Khan Zand, who was the Zand dynasty ruler of southern Persia, Agha Mohammad Khan, a leader of the Qajar tribe, reunified the country, defeated numerous rivals and brought all of Iran under his rule, establishing the Qajar dynasty. By 1794 he had eliminated all his rivals, and had retaken former Iranian territories in Georgia and the Caucasus. Agha Mohammad established his capital at Tehran, a village near the ruins of the ancient city of Ray. In 1796 he was formally crowned as Shah, but he was assassinated in 1797 and was succeeded by his nephew, Fath Ali Shah.
