Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Known as Persia until 1935, Iran became an Islamic republic in 1979 after the ruling shah was forced into exile. Conservative clerical forces subsequently crushed westernizing liberal elements. Militant Iranian students seized the US Embassy in Tehran on 4 November 1979 and held it until 20 January 1981. During 1980-88, Iran fought a bloody, indecisive war with Iraq over disputed territory. The key current issue is how rapidly the country should open up to the modernizing influences of the outside world. There is probably no person better suited to write this book on Iran's cultural and political transformation than Robin Wright. She has traveled to Iran as a reporter since 1973, when the country was "one of the few comfortable places for foreigners"including womento live and work, a place where "short skirts were acceptable" and women "wore bikinis on the beach." But the revolution in 1979 changed all that: "For anyone who'd been to Iran before, the new Islamic Republic of Iran seemed al...

In the Walled Gardens: A Novel

The book paints a very perceptive picture of pre-revolution Iran through the eyes of a sensitive upper class house-wife and a left wing radical. The love story though poignant is almost incidental. This novel has resonances in many countries of the region both in the Middle East and Asia of that period. The author has done an outstanding job. In the walled garden( or is it pairi daeza?) is a book difficult to put down.

Until 1979 there had been a monarchy rule, an almost uninterrupted feature of Iranian government for nearly 500 years. The tradition of monarchy itself is even older. In the sixth century B.C. Iran's first empire the Achaemenid Empire was already established. It had an absolute monarch centralized rule a highly developed system of administration aspirations of world rule and a culture that was uniquely Persian even as it borrowed absorbed and transformed elements from other cultures and civilizations. Although Alexander the Great brought the Achaemenid Empire to an end in 330 B.C. under the Sassanids (A.D. 224-642) Iran once again became the center of an empire and a great civilization.

he Central Intelligence Agency's secret history of its covert operation to overthrow Iran's government in 1953 offers an inside look at how the agency stumbled into success, despite a series of mishaps that derailed its original plans. Written in 1954 by one of the coup's chief planners, the history details how United States and British officials plotted the military coup that returned the shah of Iran to power and toppled Iran's elected prime minister, an ardent nationalist. The document shows that:
  • Britain, fearful of Iran's plans to nationalize its oil industry, came up with the idea for the coup in 1952 and pressed the United States to mount a joint operation to remove the prime minister.
  • The C.I.A. and S.I.S., the British intelligence service, handpicked Gen. Fazlollah Zahedi to succeed Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh and covertly funneled $5 million to General Zahedi's regime two days after the coup prevailed.
  • Iranians working for the C.I.A. and posing as Communists harassed religious leaders and staged the bombing of one cleric's home in a campaign to turn the country's Islamic religious community against Mossadegh's government.
  • The shah's cowardice nearly killed the C.I.A. operation. Fearful of risking his throne, the Shah repeatedly refused to sign C.I.A.-written royal decrees to change the government. The agency arranged for the shah's twin sister, Princess Ashraf Pahlevi, and Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, the father of the Desert Storm commander, to act as intermediaries to try to keep him from wilting under pressure. He still fled the country just before the coup succeeded.

    A Brief History Of Iran
Iran was settled some 3500 to 4000 years ago by Aryan people who migrated from the region around the Aral Sea. During the first 1000 years of Iranian history, several kingdoms rose and fell. In the 6th century B.C., King Cyrus the Great, of the Persian Achaemenid dynasty, defeated the rival Medes in northern Iran and united the Iranian people. Under Cyrus' rule Persian armies conquered all of the present Middle East and Central Asia as far as what is now Pakistan. Persepolis was built and a capital, Pâsârgâd was founded in the region of Fârs. Cyrus the Great died in 529 B.C. and he was buried at Pâsârgâd, not far from Persepolis.
Persepolis The next emperor was Darius, who developed the heritage of Cyrus. His dream of capturing Athens failed and also his son Xerxes attempted to conquer Athens but was defeated. The great empire founded by Cyrus flourished for over 2 centuries until it was overthrown in the 4th century B.C. by Alexander the Great, who burned down Persepolis. Alexander and his successors established a new dynasty and extended Greek cultural influence throughout the area.
Zoroaster (Zarathushtra) Greek rule lasted until the 2nd century B.C., when the Parthians (people who were related to the Iranians) gained control. The Parthians considered themselves heirs of the Achaemenids and adopted Zoroastrianism as the official religion. After 350 years of rule, the Parthians were defeated by the Sasanids who established another Persian dynasty and ruled for 4 centuries until the Arab conquest of Persia.

Jump to the Documents The CIA history of operation TPAJAX excerpted below was first disclosed by James Risen of The New York Times in its editions of April 16 and June 18, 2000, and posted in this form on its website at: http://www.nytimes.com/library/world/mideast/041600iran-cia-index.html This extremely important document is one of the last major pieces of the puzzle explaining American and British roles in the August 1953 coup against Iranian Premier Mohammad Mossadeq. Written in March 1954 by Donald Wilber, one of the operation’s chief planners, the 200-page document is essentially an after-action report, apparently based in part on agency cable traffic and Wilber’s interviews with agents who had been on the ground in Iran as the operation lurched to its conclusion. Long-sought by historians, the Wilber history is all the more valuable because it is one of the relatively few documents that still exists after an unknown quantity of materials was destroyed by CIA operatives – reportedly “routinely” – in the 1960s, according to former CIA Director James Woolsey. However, according to an investigation by the National Archives and Records Administration, released in March 2000, “no schedules in effect during the period 1959-1963 provided for the disposal of records related to covert actions and, therefore, the destruction of records related to Iran was unauthorized.” (p. 22) The CIA now says that about 1,000 pages of documentation remain locked in agency vaults.

    http://www.salamiran.org/IranInfo/General/History
Iran's history in brief The written history of Iran begins with the early Achaemenids, some 2,500 years ago, but since then till the dawn of Islam in Iran, all that is available on the Iranian history has been written by the ancient Greeks, who were then Iran's greatest enemies. So, the pre-Islamic historical sources are not completely reliable although there are indications that Greek historians often faithfully recorded the facts. Was there no Iranian Herodotus or Xenophon, or were Iranian historical records destroyed in the many invasions that followed? The answer is not clear. But of the ancient past, certain mythological stories have survived which had been collected during the Sassanid era; and once the Persian language emerged in the Moslem Iran, these were turned into verses, sixty thousand of them in all, by one of Iran's greatest poets, Abulghassem Ferdowsi. He compiled these verses into a book and named it "Shahnameh", the book of kings. Parts ofthese verses have been translated into English, French, Cerman and a few other languages. The book makes excellent epic reading, but for the ancient history we have to rely on Greek writings, and archaeological findings. Iranians are said to be Aryans and this is in part true. Though predominantly Aryan, they are in fact a mixture of many nations and races: the Old Asian people who lived on the Iranian plateau before the arrival of the Aryans; the Aryans who moved to the plateau mostly in the first millennium BC ; and finally the descendants of the later conquerors: Arabs, Turks, and Mongols.

Persia or Iran A Brief History
Pre-Twentieth Century "History is a mirror of the past
And a lesson for the present."

    (A Persian Proverb)
The country has always been known to its own people as Iran (land of the Aryans), although for centuries it was referred to as Persia (Pars or Fars, a province in southern Iran) by the Europeans, mainly due to the writings of Greek historians. In 1935 the Government specified that it should be called Iran; however, in 1949 they allowed both names to be used. Most people today, know Persia or Iran through its carpets, its caviar, its costly war with its neighbour Iraq, or through its importance as one of the world's major oil-producing nations. Yet, Persia has one of the richest and oldest cultures in the world. For more than three thousand years Persia was a melting pot of civilizations and demographic movements between Asia and Europe. Under Cyrus the Great, it became the centre of the world's first empire. Successive invasions by the Greeks, Arabs, Mongols and Turks developed the nation's culture through rich and diverse philosophical, artistic, scientific and religious influences. Persia's first vigorous growth began in the Neolithic era, and by the third millennium B.C. it had developed into a civilization of great sophistication. The infiltration of the Aryan peoples into Iran during the second millennium B.C. paved that way for the Achaemenian dynasty, whose achievements were gloriously represented in the great palaces of

Summary: Inlaid work is one of the valuable eastern or oriental arts. The oldest specimen obtained so far belongs to the Safavids period. Iran of today is the most important center of the inlaid work in the world. This book makes us familiar with the art of inlaid work. Text: Historical Record of Inlaid Work One of the valuable arts in the orient is inlaid work. Not much is known about the past history of inlaid work, because raw materials of inlaid work are mostly glue and wood which get destroyed with the passage of time. Nonetheless in those places which are regarded as sacred by people and which were maintained in good condition we come across specimens of inlaid work with antiquity of 200 to 300 years. The oldest specimen of inlaid work obtained so far belongs to Safavids period. This piece of craftsmanship is related to the tomb of Shah Nematollah Vali in Mahan, Kerman province. If we wish to get accurate and reliable information about the history of inlaid work, we must study the history of travels made to Iran by various tribes of the world, because some specimens of our valuable artistic masterpieces may have been plundered. Therefore, a little search in their museums may help us to achieve our purpose.

From the dawn of history, Persia has been a distinct and important cultural entity. Its position as a vast natural fortress, with mountain ranges, enabled the Persians to preserve their individuality inspite of the conquests by the Arabs (7 th century), the Turks (10 th century), and the Mongols (13 th to 15 th centuries). Today, Iran remains a country rich in traditions, with a culture which has had great influence on other countries, both in Central Asia, and throughout the world. "Human beings are all members of one body.
They are created from the same essence.
When one member is in pain,
    The others cannot rest.
If you do not care about the pain of others,

Geographically it consists of high mountains stretching across the north and west with a high plateau occupying the center of the country. The center and east of this plateau is a desert, but with irrigation the west and south of the plateau can be farmed. The empires of the Medes and Persians were among the greatest of the ancient world. Although those empires were swept away, Iran as a cultural entity remained. The boundary that marks the western edge of present-day Iran forms one of the most significant and enduring cultural boundaries of the world. The ancient civilizations that occupied Mesopotamia, Syria, Egypt, and North Africa were almost obliterated by the Arab Islamic invasion and that whole area came under Arab cultural domination. Iran, however, although it was among the first countries to fall to the advancing Arab armies, never completely lost its culture and language. Centuries later, the Iranian culture re-established itself and the Persian language re-emerged, now much influenced by Arabic, to become the dominant language of the eastern Islamic world (as far afield as Tajikistan and eastern India, Persian was the lingua franca of the eastern Islamic world until the advent of the British armies). The northern and western boundaries of Iran have, however, been under pressure from invading Turkish tribes and have contracted since ancient times.
