History
The first distinct people to emerge on the Iranian plateau were probably the Elamites, who established a city at Shush in the far south-west. The Aryans came to the region in the second millennium BC, bringing with them some agricultural and domestic skills. It wasn't until the middle of the 6th century BC, when the Achaemenian king Cyrus the Great ruled the region, that Persian history was documented. The Achaemenian Dynasty is recognised as the founder of the Persian Empire, leading to the eventual creation of Iran. In the 4th century BC Alexander the Great invaded Persia after conquering most of Greece, Egypt, Turkey and Iraq. Despite three conciliatory offers from Darius III for a negotiated peace, Alexander entered Shush. From there, he took some time to cross the mountains to the east, but eventually entered Persepolis. After Alexander's death in 323 BC, the empire was divided into three squabbling dynasties, with Persia controlled by the Macedonian Seleucids. But the Seleucids had problems controlling the numerous feisty ethnic minorities, in particular the nomadic Parthians who came to control most of Persia until the 3rd century AD. The Sassanians came from the central regions of Persia not under direct control of the Parthians. They were an industrious Zoroastrian gang who promoted urban development and encouraged trade, but who eventually set to squabbling and were overrun by the Arabs in 637. The Arabs ruled until 1050, converting most of the population to Islam and introducing the new Persian script and Islamic culture. They were brought down by a Turkish dynasty, which captured Esfahan in 1051. Despite numerous rebellions, the Turks hung onto power until they were swept clean away by Genghis Khan's rampaging Mongols in the early 13th century. When the Mongols ran out of leaders in the late 14th century, the Timurid Dynasty filled the breach, but was then pressured by Turkmen tribes, Ottoman Turks and European colonialists such as Portugal.

ersian Gulf is a crescent-shape groove which has demonstrated the encroachment of the Indian Ocean waters (Gulf of Oman) in an span of 900 km long and 240 km wide in the inferior folds of southern Zagros mountains. The Persian Gulf and its neighboring countries constitute almost one ninth of the 44 million square km span of the Asian continent. The Persian Gulf has been a valuable waterway since the beginning of history and as the venue of the collision of great civilizations of the ancient east, it has a background of several millenniums. Since centuries ago, the Ilamites used the Port of Boushehr and the Kharg Island for dwelling, shipping and ruling over the coasts of the Persian Gulf as well as transaction with the West Indies and the Nile Valley. In the Latin American geography books the Persian Gulf has been referred to as More Persicum or the Sea of Pars.
The Latin term "Sinus Persicus" is equivalent to "Persicher golf" in French, "Persico qof" in Italian, "Persidskizalir" in Russian and "Perusha Wan" that all mean "Pars".
Prior to the stationing of the Aryan Iranians on Iran's Plateau, the Assyrians named the sea in their inscriptions as the "bitter sea" and this is the oldest name that was used for the Persian Gulf.

Iran History
Iranians are descendants of Indo-Europeans who came from the Indian subcontinent about 2000 BC, although archaeological evidence indicates human habitation as early as 18,000 years ago. In 549 BC, Cyrus the Great began to make Persia (as Iran was then known) into a great empire that encompassed parts of Eastern Europe, Egypt and India. In succeeding centuries, Persia first fell to Alexander the Great (333 BC) and later to Arabs, Turks and Mongols. In 1501, the country regained its political independence. The most lasting influence was from Arabs, who introduced Islam. (Today's Iranians embrace the Shiite branch of the religion, rather than the Sunni followed by most of the Arabs.) In reaction to the oppressive regime of the shah and his Western supporters, Ayatollah Khomeini helped lead the revolution that brought to power a fundamentalist Islamic government in 1979. The world quickly got a taste of its diplomacy: A few months later, 52 staff members at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran were taken hostage for a tense 444 days, and relations between Iran and the U.S. remained precarious for nearly two decades.

BASIC INFO. ECONOMY GEOGRAPHY ... IRAN Persia and Babylonia were unified into the Persian Empire by Cyrus the Great in 549 B.C. Though Alexander the Great conquered Persia about two hundred years later, Persia did regain its independence after Alexander's death. The Persian Sassanian empire established in 226 A.D. was a formidable rival to the Roman Empire. It remained until Islam swept into the region in 641, displacing Zoroastrianism which had been the principal religion. The Mongols arrived in the early 1200s and their rule persisted until 1502. The Safavid dynasty ruled until 1736 but its end ushered in two hundred years of decline for Persia. Britain and Russia began to assert control over Persia in the 19th century. The defacto situation was formalized in a 1907 agreement between the two powers that divided Persia into specified spheres of influence. After the First World War, Persia was independent but in reality, the country was still treated as a protectorate of Britain. By 1921, the Soviet Union had given up all claims to Persian territory. That year, a military dictatorship was established by Reza Khan who then declared himself, Reza Shah Pahlavi, the first of what was to be a hereditary monarchy in 1925. The country became Iran in 1935. During the Second World War, the British (with an eye on Iran's oil) occupied the country and forced Reza Shah to abdicate. His son, Mohammed Reza Shah Pahlavi, took his place. In the early 1950s, the Shah was briefly ousted but returned in 1953, with the support of the US and British. The Shah was pro-Western, pro-progress and anti-communist. He was also repressive to his people and used the secret police to keep dissent buried. The Shah was exiled in 1979 after widespread violence erupted provoked by the religious fundamentalist elements in the country. The new government, led by austere Ayatollah Khomeini, was Islamic and totalitarian: thousands were executed as the new regime established itself. Militants took over the US embassy in 1979, holding over sixty Americans hostage for over a year. In 1980, war broke out between Iraq and Iran. It raged for most of the decade and cost the lives of at least a half-million people and probably closer to a million. In 1989, Khomeini died. Though Iran was no friend of the West, it tacitly supported the Gulf War against Iraq (its old enemy) by observing UN sanctions against Iraq and by grounding Iraqi planes that landed in Iran seeking haven from Allied bombing raids. Though a relatively 'moderate' government came into power in 1997, Iran remains deep in the grip of Muslim fundamentalism, showing few signs of moving towards democracy any time soon.

Iran has a long and rich history. For a detailed description of the Persian Empire, see Persia . Some of the world's most ancient settlements have been excavated in the Caspian region and on the Iranian plateau; village life began there c.4000 B.C. The Aryans came about 2000 B.C. and split into two main groups, the Medes and the Persians. The Persian Empire founded (c.550 B.C. ) by Cyrus the Great was succeeded, after a period of Greek and Parthian rule, by the Sassanid in the early 3d cent. A.D. Their control was weakened when Arab invaders took (636) the capital, Ctesiphon; it ended when the Arabs defeated the Sassanid armies at Nahavand in 641. With the invasion of Persia the Arabs brought Islam. The Turks began invading in the 10th cent. and soon established several Turkish states. The Turks were followed by the Mongols, led by Jenghiz Khan in the 13th cent. and Timur in the late 14th cent. Ismail , restored internal order in Iran and established the Shiite Abbas I (Abbas the Great). He drove out the Portuguese, who had established colonies on the Persian Gulf early in the 16th cent. Shah Abbas also established trade relations with Great Britain and reorganized the army. Religious differences led to frequent wars with the Ottoman Turks, whose interest in Iran was to continue well into the 20th cent.

It was conquered by Alexander the Great , but soon after Persia regained its independence in the form of the Parthian and Sassanid Empires. The latter was defeated by Islamic Arab forces in the 7th century AD, who were followed by Seljuk Turks , the Mongols , and Tamerlane The 16th century saw renewed independence with the Safavids and then other lines of kings or shahs . During the 19th century Persia came under pressure from both Russia and the United Kingdom and a process of modernisation began that continued into the 20th century . In 1953 , Iran's socialist prime minister Mohammed Mossadeq , who had been elected to parliament in 1923 and again in 1944 , and who had been prime minister since 1951 , was removed from power in a complex plot orchestrated by British and US intelligence agencies("Operation Ajax ").
