"Yes, we agree with the Americans. Our intelligence indicated that Iraq did possess weapons of mass destruction and was hiding them from the U.N.," the official said.
The official, from the top ranks of Iran's cleric-led government, asked to remain anonymous amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.
He went on to say that the big question is, "What did the Iraqis do with these weapons?"
Although Tehran does not know where these weapons may be today, there is a strong suspicion that some may have filtered onto local black markets. "We know other items, once under military control [such as broadcast transmission equipment], have found their way onto the black market," the official said.

Australians in Iran should exercise extreme caution and monitor developments that might affect their safety. There are ongoing tensions in the Middle East and risk of possible terrorist attacks against Western interests remains. Particular care should be exercised in the vicinity of government buildings. Australians should not travel to the Kerman/Bam area or the regions bordering Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan. This advice should be read in conjunction with our General Advice to Australian Travellers at http://www.dfat.gov.au/zw-cgi/view/Advice/General Safety and Security Australians in Iran should exercise extreme caution and monitor developments that might affect their safety. There are ongoing tensions in the Middle East and the risk of possible terrorist attacks against Western interests remains. Particular care should be exercised in the vicinity of government buildings. Large gatherings or demonstrations should be avoided. Recent shootings targeting the British embassy compound and surrounding facilities in Tehran underline the potential for Western interests in Iran to be targeted with violence. Acts of political violence can occur, particularly in the capital, Tehran. These incidents have included assassinations of political figures and bomb attacks against Iranian government establishments. Bombing attacks have, to date, not been aimed at foreigners, but they have resulted in civilian casualties.

Government: Islamic Republic under Constitution of 1979, with Ayatollah Sayyid Ruhollah Musavi Khomeini as faqih (see Glossary) for life and ultimate decision maker. Executive branch included elected president, responsible for selecting prime minister and cabinet, which must be approved by parliament, or Majlis (see Glossary), elected legislative assembly. Judiciary independent of both executive and Majlis. Council of Guardians, consisting of six religious scholars appointed by faqih and six Muslim lawyers approved by Majlis, ensured conformity of legislation with Islamic law. Politics: Islamic Republican Party, created in 1979, dissolved in 1987 because its factions made it unmanageable. Iran Freedom Movement, a nonreligious political party, existed in 1987 but had been intimidated into silence. Opposition political parties existed in exile abroad: monarchists, democrats, Kurds, Islamic groups, and Marxists. Regime stressed mass political participation through religious institutions, such as mosques, rather than political parties. Factories, schools, and offices had Islamic associations similar to mosque voluntary associations. Fervent religious zeal and support for the Revolution promoted by the Pasdaran (Pasdaran- e Enghelab-e Islami, or Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or Revolutionary Guards). Japan, the world's second-largest oil importer, said it may give Iran its second loan in three years to secure stable supplies of oil, days after it overrode U.S. protests and agreed to develop an Iranian oilfield.
State-owned Japan Bank of International Cooperation, that provides loans to Japanese companies and overseas governments, is considering giving the loan to Iran's government as an advance for future crude oil supplies, said Masaaki Yamada, a bank spokesman.
Japan gave a $3 billion loan to Iran in 2001 drawing criticism from the U.S. The U.S. opposes any business ties with Iran because of concerns about the Persian Gulf nation's nuclear development program, charges Iran denies. The Japanese government is addressing those concerns, Yamada said. ``JBIC itself is not talking about it directly with the U.S. government; the Japanese government is,'' said Yamada. ``The Japanese government is checking out the international situation regarding Iran. Japanese policy will have to consider many issues including the security of oil supplies.''

"So this is how we get rid of that madman Mossadegh," announced John Foster Dulles to a group of top Washington policy makers one day in June 1953. The Secretary of State held in his hand a plan of operation to overthrow the prime minister of Iran prepared by Kermit (Kim) Roosevelt of the CIA. There was scarcely any discussion amongst the high powered men in the room, no probing questions, no legal or ethical issues raised.
"This was a grave decision to have made," Roosevelt later wrote. "It involved tremendous risk. Surely it deserved thorough examination, the closest consideration, somewhere at the very highest level. It had not received such thought at this meeting. In fact, I was morally certain that almost half of those present, if they had felt free or had the courage to speak, would have opposed the undertaking."
Roosevelt, the grandson of Theodore and distant cousin of Franklin, was expressing surprise more than disappointment at glimpsing American foreign-policy-making undressed.
The original initiative to oust Mossadegh had come from the British, for the elderly Iranian leader had spearheaded the parliamentary movement to nationalize the British owned Anglo-lranian Oil Company (AIOC), the sole oil company operating in Iran. In March 1951, the bill for nationalization was passed, and at the end of April Mossadegh was elected prime minister by a large majority of Parliament. On 1 May, nationalization went into effect. The Iranian people, Mossadegh declared, "were opening a hidden treasure upon which lies a dragon".

Conservative clerical forces established a theocratic system of government with ultimate political authority vested in a learned religious scholar. A group of Iranian students seized the US Embassy in Tehran on 4 November 1979 and held it until 20 January 1981. During 1980-88, Iran fought a bloody, indecisive war with Iraq over disputed territory. Over the past decade, popular dissatisfaction with the government, driven by demographic changes, restrictive social policies, and poor economic conditions, has created a powerful and enduring pressure for political reform.

The heated debate that is daily fought on both streets and in government institutions reaches as far back as the Constitutional Revolution of 1906-1907. However, its most current form derives from the power struggle during the first chaotic stages after the 1979 Revolution. Opposition groups formed a diverse coalition under the mass appeal of Ayatollah Ruhallah Khomeini to oust and exile Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. The coalition included a wide spectrum of ideologies, ranging from secular democrats to Islamic Marxists to conservative clerics. While Khomeini had originally promised the intelligentsia that he would leave politics and return to Qom, he slowly realized that his vision of an Islamic Republic would not be fulfilled if he were to leave it to the liberal democrats. As internal feuds continued, loyal followers to the Imam infiltrated and institutionalized themselves into pseudo-government agencies. By the time the last draft of the constitution was finished in, the liberal democrats had all but lost their decision-making influence. Whereas the first draft of the constitution had no mention of Khomeini's notion of

Politics In 1979, a group of revolutionaries led by the exiled Ayatollah Khomeini overthrew the U.S.-backed Pahlavi monarchy and established the Islamic Republic of Iran. The new government drafted a constitution that vested primary political power in Iran's clergy under the principle of velayat-e-faqih . The Ayatollah Khomeini died in 1989 and the country's current Islamic spiritual leader, Ali Khamenei, succeeded him. Iran's government also includes a popularly elected president and parliament or Majiles. Moderate cleric Mohammed Khatemi was elected president in a landslide vote on May 23, 1997. Khatemi was formerly the minister of culture before hard-liners removed him from power in 1992 for having liberal views. he Central Intelligence Agency's secret history of its covert operation to overthrow Iran's government in 1953 offers an inside look at how the agency stumbled into success, despite a series of mishaps that derailed its original plans. Written in 1954 by one of the coup's chief planners, the history details how United States and British officials plotted the military coup that returned the shah of Iran to power and toppled Iran's elected prime minister, an ardent nationalist. The document shows that:
  • Britain, fearful of Iran's plans to nationalize its oil industry, came up with the idea for the coup in 1952 and pressed the United States to mount a joint operation to remove the prime minister. The C.I.A. and S.I.S., the British intelligence service, handpicked Gen. Fazlollah Zahedi to succeed Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh and covertly funneled $5 million to General Zahedi's regime two days after the coup prevailed. Iranians working for the C.I.A. and posing as Communists harassed religious leaders and staged the bombing of one cleric's home in a campaign to turn the country's Islamic religious community against Mossadegh's government. The shah's cowardice nearly killed the C.I.A. operation. Fearful of risking his throne, the Shah repeatedly refused to sign C.I.A.-written royal decrees to change the government. The agency arranged for the shah's twin sister, Princess Ashraf Pahlevi, and Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, the father of the Desert Storm commander, to act as intermediaries to try to keep him from wilting under pressure. He still fled the country just before the coup succeeded.

On Feb. 18, 2004, in the immediate run up to the controversial Iranian legislative elections, two reformist Iranian newspapers, Yas-e no and Shargh , published an open letter to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei signed by 70 reformist legislators who had resigned to protest a decree forbidding more than half of the candidates from running. The next day, the Tehran prosecutor’s office ordered the papers closed. Criticising the supreme leader is a criminal offence in Iran.
