Iran: Government Official Reports Several Deaths In Riots
Tehran, 17 August 2003 (RFE/RL) Mehdi Taheri, the Isfahan Governor General Office's director-general for political-security affairs, said that eight people, including two policemen, were killed and some 150 injured during 16 August riots in the central Iranian province, the Iranian Students News Agency reported. The original protest was against the amalgamation of two towns, Vardasht and Dehaqan. "But the demonstration turned into a riot when a number of agents provocateurs entered the scene," Taheri said. "A number of the town's youngsters also joined in the riots for the sake of entertainment," he added. Tehran radio reported earlier in the day that houses and vehicles were damaged by fire, and shop windows were broken. Another official in the governorate, a Mr. Shafii, told state radio on 17 August that the amalgamation plan has been put on hold. Such plans by the central government frequently lead to provincial riots because they affect the amount of funding and services that are provided to a locale.

IRAN: Government offers conflicting explanations of free-lancer's death
Authorities launch media crackdown and detain at least six journalists
New York, July 17, 2003— A top Iranian official said yesterday that the death of Canadian-Iranian free-lance photojournalist Zahra Kazemi might have be en caused by a fall or another accident, contradicting an announcement the same day by Iranian vice president Mohammad Ali Abtahi that Kazemi died from a "brain hemorrhage resulting from beatings"
Iranian foreign minister Kamel Kharazzi told Canada's Foreign Minister Bill Graham yesterday that Kazemi's death might have been an accident.
Kazemi, 54, died on Friday, July 11, at Baghiatollah Hospital in Iran's capital, Tehran, where she had been transferred after being held in government custody.
There have been reports that an autopsy has been performed on Kazemi, but CPJ has not been able to confirm them. Other reports suggest that her body has been buried, which will hinder any possible investigation.
"These conflicting statements only reinforce the need for an immediate, independent autopsy and investigation into Kazemi's death," said CPJ executive director Ann Cooper. "We again urge Iranian authorities to begin such inquiries at once."

A large proportion of Iranians are employed by the state. Inflation, about 16% last year, particularly hits those such as teachers and civil servants whose wages are not driven by consumer prices. Unemployment is a serious problem, with about 28% of 15.29 year olds out of work, and high rents are also a concern for the young.
    Population
In the run-up to Iran.s parliamentary elections, there is much interest in the two-thirds of the country's population aged under 30. The post-revolution baby boom generation strongly backed President Khatami.s election in 1998, but the young are now considered widely disillusioned with the pace of change and many may not vote.

Yes No VIEW RESULTS WASHINGTON (CNN) The Bush administration is considering taking a hard-line approach toward the government of Iran that could include efforts to destabilize Tehran's Islamic regime, a State Department official told CNN on Sunday. Senior Bush administration officials, including the deputy secretaries of defense and state, are scheduled to meet Tuesday to discuss Iran, the official said. Iranian officials said Sunday that the United States has cut off discussions with the Tehran government that encompassed a range of issues, levying what the Iranians called false accusations that Iran provided a haven for al Qaeda members.

    Government
By Christine Foy for the Iran Project Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi came to power in 1953 in a coup engineered by the CIA. He was praised in the West for his land reform and efforts to modernize Iran's industry and culture. But within Iran, he was seen as an increasingly brutal dictator. He instituted the SAVAK secret police in 1957 to oversee political activity and the work of the press, and in 1975 he decreed a one-party system. Mass demonstrations erupted in 1978, escalating until the Shah fled Tehran in January 1979. Iran was declared an Islamic Republic after the 1979 revolution. Iranians voted overwhelmingly in a referendum to establish an Islamic constitution. Under that constitution, the legislation of the country is guided by the code of Islamic law. Although a president and parliament are elected, supreme authority belongs to religious leaders. Tensions still exist today over how much Western influence should be allowed. Iranians also disagree on how much power should reside with popularly elected politicians or with religious leaders.
