Country List World Factbook Home The World Factbook Iran Introduction Iran Background: Known as Persia until 1935, Iran became an Islamic republic in 1979 after the ruling shah was forced into exile. Conservative clerical forces established a theocratic system of government with ultimate political authority vested in a learned religious scholar. A group of Iranian students seized the US Embassy in Tehran on 4 November 1979 and held it until 20 January 1981. During 1980-88, Iran fought a bloody, indecisive war with Iraq over disputed territory. Over the past decade, popular dissatisfaction with the government, driven by demographic changes, restrictive social policies, and poor economic conditions, has created a powerful and enduring pressure for political reform.

Iran (Persia, La Perse): History and Geography
    1. History of Iran (Persia)
Known to the West as Persia until 1935, Iran is a desert nation of unyielding religious doctrine. A constitutional monarchy governed modern Iran from 1906 to 1979, when Islamic leaders led a popular uprising that made it a republic. Iran is known for its oil wealth and for caviar that is considered among the world's best. Aryan tribes settled the Iran ian plateau in 1500 B.C. The most important were the Medes, who dominated the northwest, and Persian s from Parsua (a region west of Lake Urmia), who named the southern territory Parsamash. Warrior chief Hakhamanish, or Achemaenes, was the most powerful of the Persian rulers, but he was felled by the Medians in the seventh century B.C. Cyrus the Great overthrew Median rulers in 558 B.C., conquered the kingdom of Lydia in 546 B.C., won Babylonia seven years later, and made Persia the greatest power in the world. His son and successor, Cambyses II, expanded the kingdom in 525 B.C. by seizing Egypt. Darius the Great later constructed a canal from the Nile River to the Red Sea and crushed a revolt during 499-493 B.C. by Ionian Greeks who lived under Persian rule in Asia. However, his forces were annihilated by European Greeks in the historic Battle of Marathon in 490 B.C. Several successive land and sea battles with the Greeks marked the decline of the

    72. Freshwater Fishes Of Iran, Introduction - Geography
iran. Barthold (1984) gives an historical geography of iran and Yarshater (continuing) has many articles on geographical features.
    http://www.briancoad.com/Introduction/Geography.htm
Freshwater Fishes of Iran Introduction - Geography Revised: 07 March 2004 Acknowledgements Purpose Materials and Methods History of Research ... Quotes Iran is the second largest country in Southwest Asia (after Saudi Arabia with less than 20 freshwater fish species), has an area of 1,648,000 sq km and ranks fourteenth in the world in size, nearly as large as the British Isles, France, Italy and Spain combined (Firouz et al et al . (1979) and Davoudzadeh (1997). It is pertinent here to interject a note on geographical names. Transliteration of Farsi place names into English is possible by more than one system. This results in variant spellings for geographical features in articles and on maps of Iran. For convenience, I have followed the official standard names approved by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names. The Board publishes a gazetteer for Iran with a designation of the geographical place (e.g. lake, populated place, stream, spring, etc.) and its latitude and longitude. The latest gazetteer is available from the Defense Mapping Agency, Combat Support Center, Washington, D.C. 20315-0010. Some literature localities could not be identified from maps or gazetteers. They are placed in quotes ("....."). I have not included the diacritical marks used in the Board's system. They would be of little help to those unfamiliar with Farsi and perhaps unnecessary to those who are. Needless to say, there are variant diacritical marking systems and in any case pronunciation varies throughout Iran.

    74. The Geography Of The Iranian Empire
The geography of the iranian Empire. For comparison, modern iran, somewhat smaller than the Sassanian dominions, is five times as large as France.
    http://latis.ex.ac.uk/classics/visualessays/iran/geography.htm
The Geography of the Iranian Empire It is important to begin by stressing the vastness of the area they ruled. As the crow flies it is almost 1500 kilometres from the Euphrates in northern Mesopotamia to the most eastern known settlements of the Sassanians towards the borders of modern Afghanistan and Turkmenistan, and it is around a 1000 kilometres from the Caspian Sea to the Persian Gulf south of Fars. For comparison, modern Iran, somewhat smaller than the Sassanian dominions, is five times as large as France. So we are dealing with the equivalent of a small continent in modern terms. Map Showing Relief of Iran Two mountain ranges form the framework of the empire: The Elburz begins in Azerbaijan in the west and runs across the entire length of northern Iran, south of the Caspian Sea before it merges with the Hindu Kush of Afghanistan. The highest peak, mount Demavand, north-east of the modern Iranian capital of Teheran, is 5629 metres high, perpetually under snow. The Zagros range also begins in the tangled knot of volcanic peaks of Azerbaijan, in north west Iran, and runs as a series of huge parallel ridges south east to the Persian gulf. The Zagros is lower than Elburz, with a highest summit at Mount Elvand, 3570 metres, behind the ancient city of Ecbatana (modern Hamadan), but it is a larger and more extensive range. In the angle between them, these mountain ranges enclose the great highland plateau of Iran. Some of this is fertile and provided with water by springs and canals drawn from the mountains themselves, but a large part forms the great desert, Kuh-e Dasht. North and East of the mountains ranges are the only lowland areas of Iran. The heavily forested northern flank of the Elburz range streches down to the fertile and temperate basin of the Caspian. East of the Caspian begin the lush grassy steppes of Turkmenistan, leading without interruption into central Asia. The south-west facing slopes of the Zagros step down to the lowlands of the Tigris basin and southern Mesopotamia.

Many of these routes have been documented from as early as 5,000 years ago, and the presence of so many different people and products over the years has had a profound effect on the region's culture, politics, and economy.
More than deserts and camels The landscape of the Middle East is more diverse than the deserts that dominate movie screens and novels would suggest. Rivers allowing for productive agriculture were the key factor in the settling of cities. Mountain ranges kept cultures in separate areas, providing natural barriers to imperialist agendas. The Fertile Crescent between the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers known as Mesopotamia (now modern Iraq, and extending north into Syria and Turkey) was the home of the world's first urban culture, the Sumerians, 6,000 years ago. The Sumerians' Egyptian rivals took advantage of the annual flooding of the Nile for their regular harvest, later exporting a large portion of their produce to the Roman Empire.
