    Geography on the Internet
Like the tangible world of geographical earth space, the digital world of cyber space is a wonderfully complex place. There are loads and loads of information resources out there that you'll find useful and interesting; the trick is finding it. Well, navigating the Internet is more art than science, but here are some useful guidelines:
    • When you have a reasonably specific idea what you are looking forexpressed in terms of one or more key words or phrasesthen a search engine such as Google is probably your best bet. Type in your term(s), and see what serendipitous goodies Google brings.
    • When your area of interest is broadly or poorly defined, then you might be better served by a hierarchical web guide such as Yahoo! . For example, select the Science category, then the Geography subcategory, then the Cartography sub-subcategory, and you've got a hot-linked listing of dozens of mapping-related sites and additional subcategories.

    Location
Iran is situated in south-western Asia and borders the three CIS states, the Republic of Armenia, the Republic of Azerbaijan, and the Republic of Turkmenistan, as well as the Caspian Seas to the north, Turkey and Iraq to the west, the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman to the south and Pakistan and Afghanistan to the east.
    LANDSCAPE
A series of massive, heavily eroded mountain ranges surround Iran's high interior basin. Most of the country is above 1,500 feet, one-sixth of it over 6,500 high. In sharp contrast are the coastal regions outside the mountain ring. In the north, the 400-mile strip along the Caspian Sea, never more than 70 miles wide and frequently narrowing to 10, falls sharply from the 10,000-foot summit to 90 feet below sea level. In the south, the land drops away from a 2,000 foot plateau, backed by a rugged escarpment three times as high, to meet the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
Mountains The Zagros range stretches from the border with the Republic of Armenia in the north-west to the Persian Gulf, and then eastward into Baluchistan. As it moves southward, it broadens into a 125-mile-wide band of parallel, alternating mountains lying between the plains of Mesopotamia and the great central plateau of Iran. It is drained on the west by streams that cut deep, narrow gorges and water fertile valleys. The land is extremely hard, difficult to access, and populated largely by pastoral nomads.

    Geography
By Christine Foy for the Iran Project According to the 1996 census, the population is 61.3 million, approximately 60 percent of which live in cities. Over half of Iranians are under age 25.
The official site of the president of Iran, Mohammad Khatami. A brief description of Iran's government from the InfoPlease encyclopedia.
    Government
By Christine Foy for the Iran Project Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi came to power in 1953 in a coup engineered by the CIA. He was praised in the West for his land reform and efforts to modernize Iran's industry and culture. But within Iran, he was seen as an increasingly brutal dictator. He instituted the SAVAK secret police in 1957 to oversee political activity and the work of the press, and in 1975 he decreed a one-party system. Mass demonstrations erupted in 1978, escalating until the Shah fled Tehran in January 1979. Iran was declared an Islamic Republic after the 1979 revolution. Iranians voted overwhelmingly in a referendum to establish an Islamic constitution. Under that constitution, the legislation of the country is guided by the code of Islamic law. Although a president and parliament are elected, supreme authority belongs to religious leaders. Tensions still exist today over how much Western influence should be allowed. Iranians also disagree on how much power should reside with popularly elected politicians or with religious leaders.

Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Known as Persia until 1935, Iran became an Islamic republic in 1979 after the ruling shah was forced into exile. Conservative clerical forces subsequently crushed westernizing liberal elements. Militant Iranian students seized the US Embassy in Tehran on 4 November 1979 and held it until 20 January 1981. During 1980-88, Iran fought a bloody, indecisive war with Iraq over disputed territory. The key current issue is how rapidly the country should open up to the modernizing influences of the outside world. Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Location: Southwest Asia Southwest Asia , or West Asia , is the southwestern part of Asia. The region is sometimes considered synonymous with the Middle East, but usually the term Middle East includes North African countries or at least the part of Egypt in North Africa. Geographers that were annoyed with the ambiguity of the term "Middle East" tried to popularize the word "Southwest Asia", but with little success. The term "West Asia" has become the preferred term of use in countries such as India, possibly because of the perceived Eurocentrism of the term "Middle East".
