Some American analysts view Iranian Azeris as a potential source of instability for Tehran. At present, there is little tangible evidence to support the notion that Iranian Azeris are prepared to confront the government in Tehran. Iranian Azeris are widely known to be well-integrated into Iranian society and the state. Nevertheless, a new book by Brenda Shaffer, Harvard University’s Director of Caspian Studies, has reportedly captivated the attention of "regime change" advocates in Washington. In her book, "Borders and Brethren: Iran and the Challenge of Azerbaijani Identity," Shaffer challenges the widely held view in contemporary Iranian scholarship that a broad Iranian identity supersedes ethnic identities.

Society and Culture in Qajar Iran
Studies in Honor of Hafez Farmayan Edited by Elton L. Daniel The Qajar period of Iranian history (1797-1925) is being reinterpreted by historians of modern Iran. Once considered as a time of static backwardness, the period is now more often recognized as an age of dynamic political and social change. Beginning with a brilliant renaissance of literature and arts early in the nineteenth century, Qajar Iran not only was able to hold its independence during the awesome age of Western imperialism, it also managed to transform its traditional tribal society into a modern Iranian nation state. Hafez Farmayan, a pioneer in the scholarly study of Qajar Iran, was among the first historians to draw attention to the significant social and cultural change taking place during the Qajar period and often under Qajar patronage. This volume of essays by his students, colleagues, and friends attempts to further expand this understanding of Qajar history. After examining the circumstances which led to the establishment of the dynasty, they explore the innovations which took place in education and the arts as well as the changing status of women and the significant trends among the leading intellectual figures of the period. Travel, both by Iranians abroad and foreigners to Iran, played a key role in reshaping Iranian perceptions of neighboring countries and more distant ones. A number of essays explore this theme by surveying the burgeoning travel literature during the Qajar era; travel by Iranians to the Middle East, Europe, the United States and Japan; and travel by Russians and the British to Iran. They show, in ways that should be of interest to scholars interested in the general phenomenon of “transculturation” in the age of imperialism as well as to Iran specialists, how travel to and from Qajar Iran contributed significantly to changing material conditions, social values, and intellectual perspectives.

Fluent in Arabic and very familiar to the whole region, BBC's Frank Gardner is one of the best journalists I've ever seen. I wish he can recover from the deadly attack bu Saudi gunmen and get back to his wonderful work. Abbas Kakavand's revelations about heads of Motalefeh Eslami (Bahonar, Bohebbian, etc.) can be seen as Khamenei team's attempt to discredit the traditional Right and weaken their position in the Parliament. Bozorgmehr Hosseinpour could be another Marjane Satrapi or even a better, because he's lived all his life in Iran. Joshua Muravchik of AEI said in a new BBC documentary (Hotspot: Iran) US won't allow Israel to bomb Iranian nuclear facilities. So it has no choice but todi it itself. Iranians have long been silenced about the nuclear program. Now while the stupid hardliners are threatening the US and Israel, can it have any result other than attacking Iran's nuclear facitlities by Israel? Is our silence worth this?

Abstract:
The present article is a brief history of archaeological excavations of Iran carried out by some French archaeologists such as Jacques de Morgan, Marcel Diolafoa and Jeanne Diolafoa. Mention should be made of Pascal Coust (an architect) and Eugene Flanden (a painter), who discovered some monuments and relics during their two year stay in Iran, such as Tsephon Arch of Kangavar, Hamedan, Firoozabad, Fasa, Naghsh Rostam, Pasargad and Persepolis and published results of their works with some illustrations.
On the occasion of the centenary of the conclusion of the Archaeological concession Treaty between Iran and France (1897-1997), an exhibition, under the heading Jacques De Morgan's mission, was held in Louvre Museum in Paris. The exhibition began on October 15, 1997 for three months. On behalf of the government of his country Jacques de Morgan, a French archaeologist entered into negotiations with the king of Iran (Mozaffareddin Shah) and signed a treaty on May 15, 1897, according to which archaeological excavations were entrusted to France.

Cultural Relativists Misrepresent Iran Situation http://www.ghandchi.com/232-CulturalRelativists.htm Everyday I see a new article by so-called Iran experts justifying IRI (Islamic Republic of Iran). They write in the Western press claiming that religious democracy is what the Iranians want and they call this oxymoron as the so-called incorporating the "cultural and religious identities" of countries like Iran. Amazingly I see more such articles published in papers like New York Times, where the authors claim the Israel's democracy to be a model of such "religious democracy". I do not want to discuss Israel's democracy and whether it is similar to this so-called Islamic democracy of Khatami, but it is ironic that the authors of same views, when I previously called Israel a democracy, called me by labels like Zionist, while they try to justify IRI as a religious democracy, using Israel as a model! These authors claim that Iranians want religious democracy and not a secular democracy, and they go around the world to use Israel as a model of such thing in the Middle East. They try to give the reality of the stronger visibility of government reformists like Jebhe Mosharekat in Iran, in comparison to secular forces like Jebhe Melli and Jebhe Demokratik, to prove their point. But they masterfully neglect the reality that the secular forces have been suppressed for 24 years in Iran, while the various religious forces including the religious reformists ranging from Jebhe Mosharekt to sAzmAne EnghelAbe EslAmi of

    Iran and the Surrounding World
Interactions in Culture and Cultural Politics Edited by Nikki R. Keddie and Rudi Matthee

These essays examine Iran's place in the world - its relations and cultural interactions with its immediate neighbors and with empires and superpowers from the beginning of the Safavid period in 1501 to the present day. The book provides important historical background on recent political and social developments in Iran and on its contemporary foreign relations. The topics explored include Iranian influence abroad on political organization, religion, literature, art, and diplomacy, as well as Iran's absorption of foreign influences in these areas. A special focus is the prevailing political culture of Iran throughout its early modern and contemporary periods.
The authors combine approaches from history, political science, anthropology, international relations, and culturalstudies. Some essays address Iran's interactions with various Arab and Turkic ethnicities in the region stretching from India to Egypt. Others examine its relations with the West during the Qajar and Pahlavi eras, women's issues, culture inside Iran during the Islamic Republic, and the Shi`ite theocracy of Iran as compared with other Muslim states.
Nikki R. Keddie is professor emerita of history at UCLA and the author of many books, including Women in Middle Eastern History and Iran and the Muslim World. Rudi Matthee is associate professor of history at the University of Delaware. Other contributors are Bahman Baktiari, Thomas J. Barfield, Asef Bayat, Wilfried Buchta, Juan R. I. Cole, Ahmad Karimi-Hakkak, Firoozeh Kashani-Sabet, Golnar Mehran, Hamid Naficy, Vali Nasr, Monica M. Ringer, Jasamin Rostam-Kolayi, Gary Sick, Abolala Soudavar, and Nayereh Tohidi.

    Great guide book!

This guide book may lack the extensive lists of hotels and restaurants that Lonely Planet guides have, but for someone who is curious about travelling to Persia, this is a great idea. There are some nice photos, information on how to get there, and a good amount of cultural notes. While some of the material is probably outdated, its a great book for those who are interested in Iran.
