    Introductory Note:
    • The cultures of Central Asia and Iran share a number of remarkable features. They are Islamic, albeit Sunnite and Shi'ite, and they enjoy a common cosmology and mythology. Additionally, they share the same early history. Indeed, until the rise of the Western Turks and the subsequent coming of the Turks and Mongols to Central Asia, the primary population of the region was Iranian. As descendants of the earlier Indo-European peoples, they followed the teachings of Zoroaster and worshiped his God, Ahura Mazda.
    • From the foregoing, we can conclude that any social, political, or ideological study of the early history of this region must take this common heritage into consideration. To respect the shared values of the Iranian and the Central Asian peoples, therefore, the following arrangement is adhered to. The more recent events appear under "Central Asia" and "Iran" respectively. The ancient and medieval issues that cannot be logically divided appear under "Central Asia and Iran."

    Introduction
Visitors will find it hard to reconcile their own experiences with the pronouncements that Iran is part of an 'axis of evil'. For culture seekers, Iran has magnificent ruins of ancient cities, plus glorious mosques and mausoleums, and museums so interesting they're bound to leave your feet sore. The more adventurous can enjoy trekking, budget-priced skiing, or swooping off cliffs strapped to a hang-glider. For the traveller who doesn't mind covering up (preferably not in a stars and stripes poncho) and eschewing ale and heartfelt feminist discourse, Iran has a vast amount to offer.
    Warning
Iran is considered safe and secure for travellers, although it's best to keep abreast of world events that might have repercussions in Iran and to avoid political demonstrations and gatherings wherever possible. Visitors wishing to travel to Bam and Kerman are advised to travel with tour groups organised by travel agencies approved by the Iranian government. Potentially perilous areas in Iran include the western border with Iraq and the eastern borders with Afghanistan and Pakistan. Overland travel to Pakistan is not recommended. Egypt's charge d'affaires to Tehran Shoqi Esmaeil called here Thursday the recent meeting between the two countries' presidents as a "turning point" in expansion of cultural relations between the two countries.
In his meeting with the head of Iran's Culture and Islamic Communications Organization Hojatoleslam Mohammad Mohammadi Araqi on Wednesday, the Egyptian charge d'affaires said that his country possess ample tourist attractions and potentials which lead to expansion of mutual ties but they are still awaiting a suitable opportunity to improve two sides relations.
The Islamic Republic of Iran and Egypt have many intellectuals who can jointly take part in all cultural and intellectual conferences around the globe, he pointed out.
The head of Iran's Culture and Islamic Communications Organization, for his part, said if Iran and Egypt as great countries with ample tourist attractions provide their respective nationals with information on their tourist attractions, there will be numerous tourists and culture lovers who wish to visit the two countries.
The Egyptian charge d'affaires extended an invitation to Araqi to attend the "16th gathering on reconciliation in Islamic civilizations" to be held in Egypt this year.

Country Info Iran Introduction Iran General Data Iran Maps Iran Culture ... Iran Time and Date Iran Culture Back to Top Although the war with Iraq has imposed extraordinary burdens on the economy and society, the government of the Republic has continued its efforts to recast society according to religiously prescribed behavioral codes. These policies have resulted in a significant enhancement of the role that the mosque plays in society. The Shia clergy have become the major political actors not only at the national level but also at the local level, where the chief cleric in each town has assumed the functions of a de facto district governor. Thus, local mosques, in addition to fulfilling their traditional roles as places for prayer, have become primary sources of social services that formerly were obtained from various government ministries. Mosques also have become one of the principal institutions for enforcing the observance of public morals. All the major cultural and social groups in Iran have been affected by the changes resulting from the establishment of the Republic. The secularized, Western-educated, upper and middle classes of the prerevolutionary period have been frequent targets of criticism by the clergy and lay political leaders, who have accused them of "immoral life- styles." These secular groups have tended to resent the laws that regulate individual behavior. In particular, they dislike hejab, the dress codes that require women to be covered in public except for their faces and hands, and the prohibition of all alcoholic beverages. Members of these classes, who predominated in the upper levels of the civil service and in the professions, have also been compelled to undergo "re-education classes" in Islam to retain their positions.

Middle East from the August 21, 2001 edition REFORM: Iranian President Mohamad Khatami (front) addressed parliament on Sunday, defending his recent cabinet appointees and explaining his plans, as speaker Mehdi Karrubi listens. HASAN SARBAKHSHIAN/AP Iran's culture war intensifies On Sunday, police launched a nationwide crackdown on symbols of 'decadent' Western culture. By Michael Theodoulou The busy Tehran square was packed with hundreds of dismayed onlookers, many of them women sobbing at the spectacle, according to recent press reports. 13 young men, stripped to the waist, were being flogged for offenses against the public order - mostly for drinking alcohol, which is forbidden in Iran, and for being seen with women to whom they were not related. Since Mohamad Khatami, the reformist Iranian president, was re-elected by a landslide in June, there has been a spate of public floggings ordered by his hard-line opponents who control the judiciary. Hard-liners, it seems, are in a combative mood as they try to jerk back the hands of Iran's social clock - a task many believe to be impossible.
