Question: I am concerned that my son is ADD. What tests do you use to find this out and what are the steps I need to follow to seek treatment for him? It looks like I have ADD, too. Thank you. Good Question There is no single test or battery of tests for diagnosing ADHD. However, it is usually sufficient to complete a standard psychoeducational test battery (i.e., IQ, achievement, visual-motor, etc.), along with a thorough medical/developmental history and examination, and careful ratings of behavior in at least two settings (i.e., home and school). Computerized tests of attention/concentration are sometimes helpful, but generally are not required. For complicated cases (i.e., when a seizure disorder, other neurological complication, or severe emotional disorder may be present), a neurological or psychiatric examination may be needed, as well. At least in Georgia, we look at ADD or ADHD as a medical diagnosis. However, a lot of doctors send the kids straight back to the schools and say, "you make the diagnosis." This can drive parents crazy. In fairness, doctors may only see the child for a few minutes in the doctor's office. That's a very short time in which to determine if a child has ADD. In reality, you need information from both the school, parents, and the doctor to really make a quality decision. So What Do You Do?

Printed in PHS #4, 1993. Portions of this article and its sidebars are taken from the works of Charlotte Mason, British education reformer and founder of the Parents' National Education Union, and H. Clay Trumbull, a founder of the American Sunday School movement. Both authors lived and wrote in the nineteenth century. A pair of sisters stand side by side at the bathroom sink peacefully brushing their teeth. Their four-year-old brother bounds into the room,. Using much force he lifts the heavy stepping stool and squeezes it between them. Standing on his soapbox, now eye-level with his sisters, he states, "I want to brush my teeth." One annoyed sister, mouth full of foaming toothpaste, replies, "Can't you wait your turn?" Her brother eloquently argues, "Haven't you ever heard the story of the little boy who couldn't get any water to brush his teeth so da-seeds grew in his mouth?" "No, what seeds?" chuckles the sister, rinsing her mouth.

IQ: a hundred
As it reaches its centenary, Wendy Berliner asks if the intelligence test is back in vogue
Tuesday January 20, 2004
The Guardian

It all began because a rich kid failed to get top marks in his mathematics examinations at Cambridge University. Unlike others who moved on, Francis Galton wouldn't let his "failure" go. He went on to spawn a movement that blighted the lives of hundreds of thousands, while making a tiny group very pleased with themselves. Yes, it's the centenary of IQ testing, an idea which grew out of a eugenics nursery into a way of spotting youngsters with special needs, and was finally hijacked in this country for the 11-plus.

IQ tests urged for university entrants
by Liz Lightfoot The Daily Telegraph Teachers have lost faith in A-levels as a way of identifying the brightest students and want universities to supplement them with American-style intelligence tests. Two-thirds say students should be offered university places only after they have received their examination results instead of the present system of admission based on predicted grades. The fact that teachers - who complain that students are over-examined - support an additional test shows the extent of dissatisfaction with the present system of university admissions, says Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust, which commissioned the survey. The trust is piloting the Sat tests on which entry to American universities is based and says they help to identify talented students from low-achieving schools. The tests seek to judge how well students can solve problems, think laterally and apply their knowledge to different situations.

School Practices Testing/Student Evaluation 9 Reviews Found in Testing/Student Evaluation Achievement Tests For Young Children
http://fairtest.org/facts/ACHIEVE.html
“As evaluation tools for young children, achievement tests are not adequate for showing how or what students are learning, the kinds of help they need, or the quality of teaching they receive. Because they fail to measure much more than test-taking ability, they should not be used to make important educational decisions about young children.” This article provides reasons to support the criticism of this type of testing for young children, and suggests “practices and assessments that provide fuller, more in-depth pictures of children's development.”
How Standardized Testing Damages Education

http://fairtest.org/facts/howharm.htm
Readiness Tests

http://fairtest.org/facts/readines.htm
“The main reason for testing and evaluating students must be to improve student learning. Each year, however, public school students in the U.S. must take millions of standardized tests which are more harmful than helpful and which do nothing to improve the equality of instruction or learning for students.” This article questions the validity of readiness tests, used to make decisions about whether a child should be enrolled in kindergarten or first grade, which track they should be placed in, and often labels them as slow learners. Developmentally appropriate alternatives to readiness tests are suggested.

http://www.a2zpsychology.com/a2z guide/intelligence_quotient.htm
Intelligence quotient Intelligence quotient, or IQ, is a number used to indicate a person's intelligence. A person's IQ is based on a comparison of his or her score on an intelligence test with the scores of others on the same test.
Testing intelligence. Educators and psychologists use an intelligence test to determine a person's mental age (MA)the level of understanding and performance that the person has reached. Such a test consists of a series of mental tasks arranged in order of difficulty. Most intelligence tests include tasks involving memory, reasoning, definitions, numerical ability, and recalling facts.
Psychologists have worked out the age at which most people can correctly answer each question of an intelligence test. Suppose that a 10-year-old is asked to define certain words, to work out relationships of words and ideas, to solve simple arithmetic problems, and to remember certain facts. The child does as many of these tasks as possible. A child who completes the tasks expected of a 9-year-old but cannot complete those of a 10-year-old has a mental age of 9 years.

59. The Flynn Effect, Approximately
In fact, the high tide of iq testing was before the WWII, when the And test subjectstoday will score better on the older tests regardless of which home page..
http://home.online.no/~itlandm/Flynn.html
"The approximate truth" is intended as a series of easy explanations of common things. I'm sort of distilling facts I've read from various magazines etc, so any scientific accuracy is lost long ago. On the other hand, I mostly stick to stuff that is found in more than one source.
The approximate truth about the FLYNN EFFECT
One of the most puzzling facts in modern science is also among the easiest to overlook, despite being (often literally) in front of our eyes. It is the "Flynn effect", the fact that each generation has a strikingly higher IQ than the previous.
This is not just hard to explain, it is even hard to believe, especially for the elder generations. Still, there is a lot of evidence. In particular, the practice of IQ testing army recruits. The numbers here are so large that random variations are canceled out, and the practice has continued without pause since World War I in the USA, somewhat later for most other western countries. It was the studies of old IQ tests that convinced James Flynn (University of Otago, NZ) that something peculiar was going on: Different IQ tests had been used throughout time, and the older ones were easier. When people tried an old test and a new one, they consistently got higher scores on the old ones.
The average Intelligence Quotient of the population should always be 100. To achieve this end, the tests have had to be regularly recalibrated and even replaced with new ones. New, harder ones. If this adjustment had been ignored, average IQ would have risen by a whopping 3 points per decade. If we could take an average recruit of today back to the first test, he would have been rated a genius!
