"GIFTED" SCHOOLS: A GIFT FOR THE RICH 07-Jan-2003 In Boise, Idaho, where I live, school officials have forged ahead with their plan to create an island of separation between so-called “gifted” children and their merely ordinary peers using intelligence tests as the primary screening device.
Unfortunately, officials failed to think carefully about the likely ramifications of such a scheme.
In our test-obsessed culture, it might sound reasonable to many parents and educators to screen students for a gifted school based on their performance on IQ tests. Indeed, we are often awed by people who test off the charts on standardized tests, whether it’s the Iowa Test of Basic Skills or the SAT’s for college admission. I encountered one Boise parent, for instance, whose 7th grade son scored in the 99th percentile on a standardized achievement test but whose actual school work, according to Mom, was rather shoddy, at best. “Teachers were in awe of those test scores,” the mom told me. “They didn’t see him. They saw him as his test scores.”
Despite the widespread belief that even the most complex human traits and activities can be neatly summed up and valued by a single number, whether it’s achievement tests to measure the quality of our schools, SAT’s to measure one’s merit for selection to an elite university, or stock prices to indicate the value of a puffed up company like Enron, the numbers are far from the absolute measures of institutional value or individual merit that we like to think. Any plan that would designate gifted children according to results of IQ tests is riddled with a number of troubling problems.

I.Q. Tests and your Child
(by Carolyn Callahan and Howard Eichner)
Question:
A reader from Tampa, Florida writes "I think my child is very bright. Should I ask the school district to give my child an IQ test?"
Answer:
Before requesting that an IQ test be administered to your child, it is very important to know why you wish to know your child's IQ. You have information that leads you to conclude that your child has an exceptional capacity to learn. Is that capacity recognized by the school? Is your child's current level of achievement taken into account in the teacher's planning and instruction? Is your child challenged by the learning environment in which he or she is currently placed? If the answers to these questions are "yes", then there is little reason for requesting further assessment of your child. The teachers in the school are obviously responding to the characteristics you have recognized and an IQ score will do little to enhance the education of your child. On the other hand, if your child is bored or unchallenged by the classroom activities and his or her teachers do not recognize the level of achievement or the knowledge and skills your child has already mastered, there may be a need to provide documentation of your child's learning capacity. If you have attempted to provide evidence of your child's learning capacity and it has been denied by the educators in your child's life, then a request to have further evidence to use as argument of need for a more challenging curriculum may be warranted. Finally, if there are educational opportunities that are available only to students with a demonstrated level of aptitude (as in test score), and you believe that your child should be afforded these opportunities, then you may wish to request testing.

About IQ Tests People are surprisingly similar to each other. We all eat, drink, think, plan, and seek our goals. Yet, within these broad similarities are differences - uniqueness among individuals. Some are more artistic than others. Some might even be more intelligent than others.
Psychologists have long been intrigued by individual differences, and they have developed an array of tests to try to measure these differences. When they focus their attention on the way people differ in their ability to think, reason, and remember, then they raise questions about intelligence.
A General Intelligence Quotient Score (IQ Score) is a statistically derived number which indicates relative and comparative abilities that can be used to obtain academic skills and knowledge. You have hundreds of specific mental abilities. Some of these abilities can be measured accurately. Some of these measurements can be reliable predictors of an individual's academic achievements.
It is very important to always keep in mind that an IQ test does not measure most kinds of human abilities such as musical talent, artistic talent, emotional stability, physical coordination, or spiritual level. A higher IQ score is not a guarantee that an individual will achieve happiness, maintain sanity, or obtain spiritual growth. A lower IQ score does not mean that an individual will be unsuccessful financially, emotionally, or morally.

The Fallibility of IQ Tests The Fallibility of Tests Every year in nearly every school district a few children are tested for inclusion in whatever gifted programming the district offers. This is a tense time for many parents and their children. How smart is my child? Is she really gifted? What does that number mean? These are the most common questions. But these aren't really the right questions, because they all start with the assumption that IQ tests measure something as constant as blue eyes or brown hair, and as measurable as height or volume or the annual rainfall in the Sahara. In actuality no one has ever defined exactly what 'IQ' is and no one really knows how to measure what goes on inside the human mind. The 'right' questions should most likely sound something like this . . . Which test did you use? Did the test cover verbal skills? Performance skills? Both equally? Or did it simply measure the mastery of certain academic skills like reading and mathematics? How high does your test measure? Does the maximum attainable IQ top out at 145? 160? 200+? How old is the child? Is the test geared for use with this age, or is the child being tested 'out of level'? How was the test administered? One on one or in a group setting? How was the child feeling? Was he healthy? Was she motivated? Did he get to go to the bathroom beforehand? Was the room pleasant and free of distractions? Does the child have any physical or neurological disabilities that might make it hard to recognize his true ability? Most important, do the test results seem to line up with that the child's teachers and parents have observed at school and at home? Or are there discrepancies? If a parent can find the answers to all these questions, then she might begin to understand what the test really means, at least where her particular child is concerned.

Introduction: In the following page you will find some useful links for the most common IQ and Achievement tests that you are likely to come across. While the Stanford Binet (Form - LM) is the most appropriate test for the highly gifted, it is not normally accepted by the school boards because the test itself is out of date (unfortunately) and also available to the general public. Because of these reasons, it is assumed to be unreliable. * Please check with your local school board prior to seeking out private testing to ensure that the tests you will have completed are acceptable as admissible for the purposes of designating your child as 'gifted'. If you have already completed testing, understand that even if the tests are not accepted by your board as qualifiers for the official designation of 'giftedness', that they still may provide very useful information when developing a suitable program for your child in school. Overview and Standardization
The CI/AT is actually a computerized version of the American School Psycho-Educational Assessment (ASAS) and the American School Achievement Test (ASAT). These group-administered tests of ability and achievement were modified for use so that children could take them on the computer. There is no evidence in either the handbook or the technical manual that any children were actually administered the computerized version of the test during standardization. Instead, the ASAS and the ASAT were standardized based on a paper-and-pencil administration.

Independent IQ testing under fire High scores open door to taxpayer-funded benefits for kids who earn the 'gifted' label By Julie Poppen, News Staff Writer
    March 18, 2002
Despite concerns about the validity of IQ testing done by private psychologists and testing centers, metro area school districts routinely use their test results to place students in taxpayer supported gifted programs. A review found that most districts accept independent IQ testing. Statewide, schools spend $5.3 million annually on gifted and talented programs. GetAd('31', false, 'c1', 120, 600, 'EDUCATION_ARTICLE_DETAIL', ''); "I think it's consistently a concern that test results are being accepted from people who do not use appropriate testing methods or (whether they) are qualified to administer those tests," said Ruth Gonzalez, president of the Colorado Society of School Psychologists. "Parents who hope that their child is gifted and talented and hope to have the prestige associated with that are more likely to ask for private testing and find a private evaluator who will provide that label whether or not adequate testing is performed."

They want to test him to see if he'd qualify for some special educational opportunities. I am really excited that he may be getting some extra challenges in school, but I'm worried about the test itself. Two things can go wrong, he could do really well and get a swelled head, or he could do not as well and get a poor self image or put on a less than challenging track. I don't know why they need a test to prove that he's a real smart kid. Don't they look at his grades and his performance in school? He said he WANTS to take the test, so I'm going to let him. He'll be 8 in 3wks btw, 3rd grade next year. Has anybody else have a child take an IQ test, what can I expect? How did you handle it?
