Since some vocational education programs include courses that prepare students to take the General Educational Development (GED) examination for high school equivalency, the impact of a GED certificate on workers' wages is also analyzed. The surveys on which this analysis is based are the 1992 National Adult Literacy Survey (NALS) and the 1991 Workplace Literacy Assessment Survey. NALS, a national survey conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics and the Educational Testing Service, sampled 14,900 adults aged 16 and older in the United States (with African Americans and Hispanics over-sampled).
