Iowa School for the Deaf
William P. Johnson, Ph.D., superintendent; Council Bluffs 51503; 712/366-0571, voice or TDD The School for the Deaf (ISD) is a state, tax-supported school open to all students in Iowa under 21 years of age whose hearing loss is too great for them to progress satisfactorily in a regular or modified public school program. Located on a beautiful 120-acre campus three and one-half miles south of downtown Council Bluffs on Highway 275, the school's educational program is designed to provide successful and satisfying learning experiences which promote balanced intellectual and social growth. Total communication programming assists each student in the education effort so that social interaction skills, as well as the concept development of each student, can evolve to maximum potential possible. No charge is made to residents of Iowa for room, board, laundry, tuition, transportation, and limited medical and dental care. The school is governed by the State Board of Regents. Through its mainstream and off campus programs, Iowa School for the Deaf works cooperatively with area schools to provide the opportunity for deaf amd hard-of-hearing impaired students to attend classes in the public school system. Conversely, students from Council Bluffs and other southwest Iowa school districts attend classes in ISD's vocational department through a "reverse mainstream" program.

Iowa Vocational Association Award to ISU Biotechnology Program
Iowa State University Office of Biotechnology October 13, 1997 AMES, Iowa - The Iowa Vocational Association, an organization for vocational educators in the state's schools and community colleges, has presented a 1997 Citation Award to Walter Fehr , director of biotechnology at Iowa State University.
The IVA Citation Award recognizes individuals, legislators, groups or industry committed to and actively involved in improving and promoting vocational education. Fehr joined ISU's agronomy faculty in 1967 and has served as director of biotechnology since 1984. The award was presented to Fehr in recognition of ISU's efforts to help Iowa's agriculture and family and consumer sciences educators incorporate biotechnology into their curriculums.
Marlene Scott, a teacher at Central Decatur Community Schools in Leon and the 1997 IVA President, announced the award during the IVA's annual conference Sept. 30 in Ames.
"Genetic engineering technologies are impacting what we teach about crops, livestock, food and human health," Scott said. "The Citation Award is one way that our members can express their appreciation to Iowa State University for its program that keeps Iowa educators up-to-date with the rapidly growing field of biotechnology."
ISU's biotechnology outreach program began in 1987 when it sponsored its first biotechnology workshop for science, agriculture, and family and consumer science educators. Since that time, ISU-sponsored workshops have provided hands-on laboratory training for about 600 middle school, high school and community college instructors and ISU extension professionals.

Thomas Jefferson High School, Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Thomas Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has developed Careers 101 , a model program that infuses career exploration and preparation into the total educational curriculum. This effort to integrate academic and vocational education began when the Iowa State Department of Education mandated school-to-work transition as a high priority for Iowa public schools. The Careers 101 program emphasizes professional development, in which teachers visit area businesses and industries to gain more insight into the world of work. Also, representatives of business and industry present programs on workplace skills and proficiencies that students need to develop in order to be successful in their future vocations. Applying what they have learned, teachers infuse career exploration and career preparation activities into their instruction. They model and require students to use workplace team skills in the classroom. They also have created cross-curricular partnerships, in which teachers from various disciplines work together to enhance academic and vocational learning. The goal of this program is that each student will "develop the academic and social characteristics necessary for successful transition into future careers" (cited in First in the Nation in Education [FINE] Foundation, 1997, p. 4). To accomplish this goal, the school has outlined specific outcomes for students. One of those outcomes is the completion of a Personal Planning Portfolio, in which each student details career aspirations and vocational applications learned in classes. The school also is working to develop a career counseling program.

Commander: Tom Ferguson
Here's your chance to tour the most technologically advanced and highly skilled fighting force in Iowa, from the safety of your own desktop. See some of the Iowa men and women that make it happen. And if you're so inclined, become one of them.
Key Features
Training in the "Ironman" Battalion
  • Training makes the difference. It's what turns an ordinary man or woman into a soldier. So whether their specialty is exiting helicopters at 1,300 feet or maneuvering as a member of a fire team, training helps them become the best they can be. Medicine

  • Army medics are trained to fix problems long before they reach the hospital. Telemedicine even allows him or her to perform minor emergency surgery, with the physician's long-distance supervision. A soldier who chooses a medical MOS may also be trained as a practical nurse, an X-ray, or respiratory specialist.
  • Signal Operations and Intelligence

  • The Army heads all the Military Satellite Communications for the Department of Defense. Signal Operations is the maintenance crew on the military's information superhighwayalong which travel "friendly" and, occasionally, enemy signals. Military Intelligence involves gathering information and composing battle strategies based on it. Soldiers in both Signal Operations and Intelligence have a vital role in information control and transmission in today's highly computerized Army.

Your comments are welcome and can be emailed to the address listed at the bottom. Key Features
Training in the "Ironman" Battalion
  • Training makes the difference. It's what turns an ordinary man or woman into a soldier. So whether their specialty is exiting helicopters at 1,300 fee or maneuvering as a member of a fire team, training helps soldiers develop skills and confidence they'll be able to use later on.

  • The National Guard has more than 200 Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) to choose from. And, as the Army becomes more technologically advanced, so does the training soldiers receive in their MOSs.
High-tech training makes our soldiers more marketable in an information-based society. Much of it is either directly transferable to a civilian career, or builds character traits that employers are looking for. So, basically, wherever a soldier wants to go in life, he or she can get there from here.

elcome to the Vocational Education Page in the Dubuque Community Schools Web site. In Dubuque Community Schools, vocational education takes many and varied forms, from curriculum planning to activities that extend opportunities for our students beyond the classroom experience. Today vocational education includes highly technical training to prepare students for the evolving information industry, for example. Why Vocational Education is So Important In many individual cases, a four-year liberal arts education may not be the best fit for a particular student at this stage of his or her life. This is why the Dubuque Community School District is collaborating with regional and state education agencies as well as the Iowa Association of Business and Industry, to continually explore and cultivate post secondary educational options for our students. One of the programs we are most enthusiastic about is School-to-Work. Below is a cursory outline of School-to-Work as we apply it in our District.
