Statehood
Iowa became the 29th state on December 28, 1846.
Capital City: Des Moines
Founded at the confluence of the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers; originally a military outpost.
Nickname: The Hawkeye State
The nickname was adopted early in the state's history. Two Iowa promoters from Burlington are believed to have popularized the name.
State Banner and Motto
The Great Seal of the State of Iowa
The Great Seal of Iowa pictures a citizen soldier standing in a wheat field surrounded by farming and industrial tools, with the Mississippi River in the background. An eagle overhead bears the state motto.
State Flower: Wild Rose
The 26th Iowa General Assembly designated the wild rose as the official state flower in 1897. It was chosen for the honor because it was one of the decorations used on the silver service which the state presented to the battleship USS Iowa that same year. Although no particular species of the flower was designated by the General Assembly, the wild prairie rose (rosa pratincola) is most often cited as the official flower. Wild roses are found throughout the state and bloom from June through late summer. The flower, in varying shades of pink, is set off by many yellow stamens in the center.
State Bird: Eastern Goldfinch
The Iowa General Assembly designated the eastern goldfinch, also known as the American goldfinch and the wild canary, as the official state bird in 1933. It was chosen as the state bird because it is commonly found in Iowa and often stays through the winter. Seeds from dandelions, sunflowers, ragweed and evening primrose are the main source of food for the eastern goldfinch (carduelis tristis). In late July or early August, goldfinches build their nests from plant materials and line them with thistledown. The pale blue-white eggs of the eastern goldfinch hatch after two weeks and then, following two to three more weeks, the young birds leave the nest. The top of a male's head is topped with black and their bright yellow body also has black wings and tail. The female has a dull olive-yellow body with a brown tail and wings. The male goldfinch acquires the same dull plumage in the winter months.

Iowa schools fret about finances as classes resume
As districts again try to do more with less, many will have to find new ways to pay for standard supplies. By KATHY A. BOLTEN
Register Staff Writer
The e-mail message sent to Pleasant Hill Elementary School parents this month was a reminder that many Iowa schools face another year of tight finances, even for necessities such as paper, pencils, workbooks and reading materials. The message from the Pleasant Hill Parent-Teacher Organization member prodded parents to help raise money by saving box tops from cereals and taking advantage of school contribution offers at stores and shopping malls.

Des Moines is one of just 13 of 370 Iowa school districts with a similar credit rating. Only two districts are rated higher- Iowa City and Western Dubuque, according to Public Financial Management.
“This A+ is a credit to sound fiscal management by the school board. The board has approved balanced budgets while holding the line on general fund property tax rates, despite having to make difficult decisions and severe budget reductions.”
“The A+ rating reflects the district’s improved financial position and demonstrated ability to maintain balanced operations and sufficient liquidity during a period of minimal state aid increases that have forced budget cuts; the district has demonstrated it can operate with a balanced budget through this extended period of mismatched revenues and expenditures. The stable outlook reflects the anticipation of continued balanced financial operations, achievement of long-term financial goals, and successful management of capital demands.”

BLOCK SCHEDULING IN SCHOOLS MAY IMPACT STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT/ACT SCORES
IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY
AMES, Iowa Student achievement may be impaired by certain models of block scheduling, according to a new series of studies by Iowa State University and ACT.
Block scheduling models typically divide the school day into 80-90 minute blocks of time. The two main models are 4x4-semester plans (four classes per semester) and eight-block alternating-day approaches (eight classes throughout the year, with four classes on one day and four other classes on the next day). In contrast, under the more common seven- or eight-period daily scheduling models, students typically attend seven or eight 45-50 minute classes each day.
Block scheduling is used by about 30 percent of high schools in Iowa and Illinois, according to a series of joint studies conducted by a research team of Donald Hackmann, associate professor of educational leadership and policy studies at Iowa State, and Matt Harmston, Ann-Maureen Pliska and Robert Ziomek from ACT Inc. ACT is an Iowa City-based educational services firm that administers the ACT Assessment. The ACT assesses high school students' general educational development and their ability to complete college-level work.

Vilsack, Iowa schools face tough choices in lean times
By Mike Glover - The Daily Iowan Published: Friday, November 22, 2002 DES MOINES — Gov. Tom Vilsack warned local school officials that "difficult choices" lie ahead because of the state's budget crunch, but he said he would protect education from the worst of the cuts.
"Our top priority from a budget standpoint is going to be the education of our children," Vilsack told a convention of the Iowa Association of School Boards. "There's not a great deal of certainty I can provide."
Early estimates warn that the state may face a budget shortfall of up to $400 million when the Legislature convenes in January, and both Vilsack and Republicans, who have a majority in the Legislature, have ruled out a tax increase.
That makes another round of budget cuts a virtual certainty, and with education amounting to 60 percent of the state's budget, schools can't escape entirely.
