Since state aid is an important part of every school district’s budget, setting the level of state funding is crucial to all of Iowa’s public schools. This week, bipartisan agreement was reached to increase state aid by 4% for the 2001-2002 school year. This was the level recommended by Governor Vilsack and the House Democrats. It will provide school districts with almost $79 million in increased funding, which is a responsible level of commitment to our students while consistent with maintaining a balanced state budget. The increase in funding, called allowable growth, is set two years in advance so that school districts have the opportunity to plan and budget ahead.
