Research Topic - Beginnings
In this section you will have the opportunity to investigate the geological makeup of the state from its beginnings dating from the Pleistocene period more than a million years ago. You will be able to study the glaciers that covered parts of Iowa and how they formed the land into the landscape that we have today. Among these many land forms is one that is only found here in Iowa and an area of China. This area is called the Loess Hills. If you so desire you might study the prehistoric wild life found in Iowa. Dinosaurs were not known as residents of Iowa but a new discovery points to a remote possibility of their presence. Many other exotic creatures were in Iowa and you can learn about and catalog these. You can begin your investigation with the links and print materials below.

Title Index The panoramic map was a popular cartographic form used to depict U.S. and Canadian cities and towns during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Known also as bird's-eye views, perspective maps, and aero views, panoramic maps are nonphotographic representations of cities portrayed as if viewed from above at an oblique angle. Although not generally drawn to scale, they show street patterns, individual buildings, and major landscape features in perspective. The majority of items presented here are documented in PANORAMIC MAPS of Cities in the United States and Canada Albert Ruger, Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler, Lucien R. Burleigh, Henry Wellge, and Oakley H. Bailey who prepared more than fifty-five percent of the panoramic maps in the Library of Congress. Additional panoramic maps will be added throughout 1998. The mission of the Library of Congress is to make its resources available and useful to Congress and the American people and to sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations. The goal of the Library's National Digital Library Program is to offer broad public access to a wide range of historical and cultural documents as a contribution to education and lifelong learning. The Library of Congress presents these documents as part of the record of the past. These primary historical documents reflect the attitudes, perspectives, and beliefs of different times. The Library of Congress does not endorse the views expressed in these collections, which may contain materials offensive to some readers.

Originally home to Indian tribes of the Great Plains, the Iowa region was first visited by Europeans when French explorers camped along the Mississippi River in 1673. But this land remained largely undiscovered until the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804-06 following the Louisiana Purchase, which included present-day Iowa, by President Thomas Jefferson. The U.S. Army built Fort Madison the first fort in Iowa in 1808. While fur companies established trading posts on the Des Moines, Mississippi and Missouri rivers, the region remained Indian land, officially closed to permanent settlement. As part of the treaty that ended the Black Hawk War in 1832, the United States purchased the eastern portion of Iowa from the Sauk and Fox Indians and pioneers began moving into the region. Dubuque, the oldest city in Iowa, was settled the following year. Congress created the Territory of Iowa in 1838. It became the 29th state in 1846 with a population of 102,000 after voters adopted its final geographic boundaries. In 1853, New York publisher Horace Greeley advised Josiah Grinnell, "Go West, young man, go West and grow up with the country!" Grinnell, a Congregationalist minister, heeded this advice and settled in Iowa where he established the town of Grinnell.

A farm north of Sibley in Osceola County marks Iowa's highest point, 1,670 feet above sea level. Conversely, Iowa's lowest point is at the confluence to the Des Moines and Mississippi Rivers in Lee County, 470 feet above sea level. Iowa's four distinct seasons provide a wide range of temperature variation through the year - a perfect place to celebrate summertime sunshine and winter wonders!
