    Bringing inner geography to light
By Vidya Murthy - The Daily Iowan Published: Monday, June 23, 2003 The wide-open spaces, the rolling plains, the multi-hued skies, the swaying cornfields dotted with fences and barns - Marcia Wegman's representations reflect her love for the Iowan land.
While the images are infused with emotional warmth, and the viewer experiences a certain connection and recognition, Wegman avoids maudlin sentimentalism. She does not romanticize but carefully composes her pictures by positioning each element in the picture in quite a strict manner, not unlike that of a mathematician. The dappled surfaces are achieved by the deft application of the pastels.
Wegman has a deep fascination with this medium and has learned to manipulate it to her advantage. Despite a prophecy made by her teacher that women could never make it as artists, Wegman has not only disproved the observation but has made a significant contribution to the Iowa art scene.
While her basic training in fine arts was in Oxford, Ohio, she got her graduate degree in printmaking from the UI. Iowa City has been her home since 1957.

Iowa - Geography Midwestern state in the N central United States. It is bounded by the Mississippi R., across which lie Wisconsin and Illinois (E); Missouri (S); Nebraska and South Dakota, from which it is separated by the Missouri and the Big Sioux rivers, respectively (W); and Minnesota (N). Typical of Iowa is the prairie. Covered a little more than a century ago with grass higher than the wheels of the pioneers' prairie schooners, or covered wagons, the prairies are now covered with fields of corn and other grains. The wild flowers that once blossomed among the prairie grass still brighten the roadsides; however, few areas of the original grassland remain, and prairie grass preserves have been established. The former habitat of wild turkeys, prairie chickens, and quail, Iowa abounds with migratory geese and ducks and the imported ring-necked pheasant and European partridge, all of which are hunted in the autumn. Des Moines is the capital and largest city. Other major cities are Cedar Rapids, Davenport, and Sioux City. Near Marquette is Effigy Mounds National Monument, site of Native American mounds built by the area's earliest inhabitants. Many state parks and forests provide recreational facilities.

"It's an ideal location logistically," Gregos said. "It really opens the possibilities of future expansion with other customers in major Midwestern markets." Economic development officials in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids are banking that Alpla is just the latest corporation to set up shop in what's being marketed under the trademarked title: The Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Technology Corridor. "If companies are not already located in the Midwest, they may not have any idea where Cedar Rapids and Iowa City are and what companies are already located here," said Jordan. "Our hope is that by working together, and defining who and what we are ... we are able to create more opportunities to compete and grow."
