About AEAs Legislation News AEA Directory ... Board Room I owa Area Education Agencies are regional service agencies which provide school improvement services for students, families, teachers, administrators and their communities. The AEAs work as educational partners with public and accredited, private schools. Agency staff members, school staff and families work together to help all children reach their potential. As intermediate agencies, AEAs offer the kinds of services that can be most efficiently and economically provided on a regional or cooperative basis among school districts. The Iowa system is widely regarded as one of the foremost regional service systems in the country. AEA programs and services fall into nine areas (below) that are defined by state AEA accreditation standards. Specific programs are outlined in each agency's Comprehensive Improvement Plan.

Welcome to the Iowa Educators Consortium
The Iowa Educators Consortium, IEC, is an initiative of the Iowa Area Education Agencies. Iowa AEAs formed the IEC as an independent, tax-exempt, nonprofit institution supporting the mission of the Area Education Agencies. The primary function of the IEC is to provide a voluntary purchasing program for K-12 schools by bringing all statewide school purchasing programs under one legal umbrella and one fiscal management group. IEC purchases allow schools to take advantage of aggressive pricing based on the purchasing volume of many Iowa schools.

IMSC is an alliance of leaders from business and industry, education, and public policy working to achieve mathematics and science literacy for all citizens in Iowa. Current Activities
Notable Accomplishments

The Iowa Mathematics and Science Coalition has three major thrusts for the coming year: 1). We are involved in Linking Leaders and this should provide new direction and momentum for the coalition. 2).We received a grant ($123,875) from the Iowa Board of Regents for a project entitled "Teachers Engaged in the Advancement of Mathematics and Science" (TEAMS). This grant will allow the coalition to work with teams of teacher/leaders from four Area Education Agencies and one local district in preparing quality professional development for schools in northeast Iowa. 3). Our third thrust will be a series of meetings with higher education agencies to work on a coordinated plan for preservice and inservice training. Outgrowths of this would be sharing and/or developing consistant and quality programs for preservice teachers throughout the state and definition of quality professional development to assist the state in its 40 million dollar teacher compensation plan.

Local Efforts Iowa's education standards require the board of education in each LEA to "adopt a plan for the efficient and effective use of technology in the instructional program." This plan "shall provide for the understanding and use of current technology by staff and students and shall include a procedure to review the district's utilization of technology as a teaching and learning tool." Technical assistance in the development of these plans is generally provided by the educational services and media personnel of Iowa's intermediate education agency, the AEA Area Education Agency. State Efforts At the state level, the following efforts are being made:
  • The State Board of Education's "strategic plan" includes an objective addressing "instructional technology," which declares that "the power of technology will be harnessed in Iowa schools and community colleges to help students learn."
  • The Department of Education has appointed a technology commission to develop "a clear and compelling vision for using technology to transform the education system at the building, district, area and state levels to support the teaching and learning process." This commission will conduct policy and practice analyses and provide a forum for addressing issues in technology.
