HEADLINES Gasoline prices explained Even though crude oil prices ducked back under $40 a barrel this week, markets are likely to remain volatile. Mark Joerger, CHS director energy risk trading, says because retailers are on the “front line,” they need to understand the complexities contributing to the prices they and their customers are paying.
“High crude prices are definitely the number one factor,” says Joerger. “But there are at least twenty other things I can list off the top of my head that pressure gasoline markets. For example, supply not being able to keep up with growing demand, a lot of environmental fuel specifications and, last but not least, political instability in the middle east and Venezuela.”
Joerger says the U.S. currently imports more than 62% of the crude products consumed here. Cenex and other American oil companies pay the world price and buy on the international market.
“China’s crude oil imports went up 36 percent last year,” Joerger says. “And just as their economy is affecting steel and other commodities, its also a factor in our pump prices.”

Consumers Energy Helps Zearing Obtain USDA Business Development Funds
April 12, 2004, Marshalltown, IA – Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman announced on April 6, 2004, that Consumers Energy of Marshalltown, Iowa, will receive grant funds totaling $136,000. The economic development grant dollars will then be given to the community of Zearing to construct a new medical clinic. Nationwide 34 loan and grant recipients in 17 states will receive $10.9 million in rural business development funds. The loans and grants will support 55 business ventures and assist in the creation or saving of over 900 rural jobs as part of the Bush Administration's ongoing efforts to spur economic development in rural areas. Negotiated Discounts for Iowa Libraries
State Negotiated Contracts Year 2004 Each year the State of Iowa negotiates contracts for library discounts for
books, videos, audio tapes and discs. The contract terms are available
to all government entities: state, county and local. The Iowa Department of General Services' contracts are at: http://das.gse.iowa.gov/purchase/index.html This screen provides a search box to type in the vendor's name or contract number. Click on Current Contracts and then choose alphabet range of the subject. Scroll down to "Books." Baker & Taylor's contract number for books, videos, audio tapes and discs is CT1305MVV. Ingram's is CT1305MV. The table shows the vendor and whether products are available statewide. Scroll through this list to find statewide contracts for other items, i.e., computers, fax machines, furniture. If there is a contract listed, but the sale price is listed as $.00, you must contact the approved vendor for pricing. Particular items from these vendors change prices so often throughout the year that it is necessary to contact the vendor in order to get the best pricing at the time of your purchase request.

Can I sell my home preserved food?

April 2003
Can I sell food made in my home kitchen?
The short answer is, "probably not." Each state is different, so proper advice is needed from a specialist in each state. Some states allow sales at farmer's markets of select foods; others prohibit sales altogether. The National Center for Home Food Preservation does NOT provide guidelines to home food preservers who wish to take the next step from home food preservation to commercial food preservation. Home food preservation is not regulated; however, food preservation and processing for commercial purposes is regulated. There are federal level regulations from the U.S. FDA (also USDA for meat and poultry products), state level regulations, and often county or city regulations.
