Obituary Frances R. Hulbert, 86 Palmer Alaska
Frances R. Hulbert died on December 6, 2001 at Valley Hospital surrounded by her family. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Palmer, on Wednesday, December 12 at 2 PM. Visitation will precede Mass, and a reception will follow. Burial will be at Aurora Cemetery in Wasilla. Frances was born March 14, 1915 in Moorland, Iowa, the second of ten children born to George and Mary Byrne. After a one room rural schoolhouse, then Iowa State University, she taught high school and worked with the Iowa Cooperative Extension Service. In 1945, Frances came to Palmer to work with the Alaska Cooperative Extension Service. She met and married Jim Hulbert, then spent several adventuresome years prospecting and mining gold at Chicken in the Fortymile area. After the Hulbert family returned to Palmer in 1952, Frances worked as a school teacher, then as the Cooperative Extension Service agent, retiring in 1971. She traveled extensively teaching home economic skills. Frances and Jim then built a retirement home in Wasilla, then moved into the Pioneer Home in 1997. Frances loved to travel, taking Jim on world cruises, safaris, and visiting relatives. Frances was involved in church activities, and was a founder of Bishop's Attic. She was active in Beta Sigma Phi, PTA, local Homemakers clubs, Fiber Arts Guild, and served as a 4-H leader.

    EXTENSION HOME ECONOMIC'S MISSION
Alaska's families, in all their diverse forms, are Alaska's future. The Extension Home Economics program's primary "unit of care" is the family within its home environment. Extension Home Economics' program faculty help people improve their lives through an educational process that uses research based knowledge focused on issues and needs defined by the clientele. This program provides education in the areas of food (safety, preservation, preparation, food product development), nutrition, housing and home environment, energy utilization, clothing, management of financial and other resources, child development, and human relationships. Extension Home Economics programs promote positive change and growth for the family system within the community and the larger society.

    Cover Crops at a Glance
compiled by Mark Schonbeck and Ralph DeGregorio
Cover crops are grown not to produce food or fiber, but to conserve, maintain and enrich the soil, and to perform other functions in the agricultural ecosystem. Growing cover crops during seasons in which the land would otherwise be idle protects the soil from water and wind erosion, reduces the loss of nutrients through leaching and runoff, adds organic matter and suppresses weeds. Legumes such as clover support symbiotic bacteria on their roots which fix (convert) atmospheric nitrogen into a form that plants can use. Many cover crops can extract nutrients from insoluble minerals, making them available for plant growth. When cover crops are turned back into the soil (at which time they are often called "green manures"), their residues contribute to soil organic matter, and a substantial part of their nutrients become available to the next crop. Finally, some cover crops provide food (nectar) or habitat for beneficial insects. Because so many benefits can be derived from a relatively small input of materials (10 to 100 lb seeds per acre), cover crops have been called a cornerstone of many sustainable agricultural systems (Liebhardt et al. 1989) At the New Alchemy Institute, we have been studying cover crops for sustainable vegetable production for the past three years. The table on the following page is a synopsis of information on cover crops for temperate climates, derived from a review of literature and seed catalogues, a survey of farmers in the Northeast (Schonbeck 1988), and our own experience.

The Upper Midwest Gap Analysis Program
    by Daniel J. Fitzpatrick
The Gap Analysis Program (GAP) In 1995, the Upper Midwest Gap Analysis Program (UMGAP) was simultaneously initiated in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin under the coordination of the Environmental Management Technical Center (EMTC) in Onalaska, Wisconsin. The EMTC has since become part of the Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center (UMESC), and Illinois has since joined the regional partnership. The UMESC also coordinates closely with state GAP efforts in Iowa and Indiana. The objectives of UMGAP are listed in the Table.
Table. Upper Midwest Gap Analysis Program Objectives.
    • Develop a multi-state, multi-institutional, cooperative approach toward the generation and use of basin-wide landscape data in the Upper Midwest. Map the existing land cover of the Upper Midwest using uniform standards and protocols, with a minimum mapping unit of not less than 2 hectares. Produce maps showing the predicted distributions of native bird, mammal, reptile, and amphibian species in the Upper Midwest.
