By W.P. Kinsella I came to Iowa for the first time in August 1976 to study at the Writers' Workshop in Iowa City. Even though the setting was different from the prairies of Alberta and the ocean of Vancouver Island where I had spent my life, I quickly fell in love with the state with the rolling fields of corn, the dense humidity, the tall bamboo canes thick as hoe handles. I had never seen the dazzle of fireflies before. I also loved the intimacy of the Iowa River where it snaked, green and lazy, across the University of Iowa campus. There is a spot on campus, along the riverbanks just outside the English-Philosophy Building, where I have decided I want my ashes spread. I loved the town, the Prairie Lights bookstore, the small restaurants and the magnificent old homes, one of which Flannery O'Connor lived in when she was a student at the workshop. I enjoyed driving through the nearby cornfields, the air heavy and fragrant with growth. I did not want my two years of graduate studies to end. I decided to try to show, in my fiction, how I had come to love Iowa. I began thinking about some stories my dad had told me about Shoeless Joe Jackson and what had happened to him after he was wrongly banned from baseball; they were good stories but not necessarily true. Then I thought, What would happen if... ? Which is what storytellers like me spend their lives asking. I wondered, What would happen if Shoeless Joe Jackson came back in this time and place, which was Iowa City in the spring of 1978?

CORALVILLE, IOWA - It's a US$280 million deal that evokes a paraphrase of a line from "Field of Dreams": Are we in heaven, Iowa . . . or a rainforest? It's definitely two out of three. The project, which will create 2,200 new, fulltime jobs, is headed for Coralville, Iowa, three and a half miles (5.6 km.) northeast of Iowa City. The Iowa Child Institute ( www.iowachild.org ) has tapped the city as the site for the Iowa Child Project, designed to enhance state education and quality of life, according to project officials. The Coralville complex will include an enclosed rainforest spanning five acres (two hectares), ranking as the world's largest. In addition, the project will include an IMAX theater, an aquarium, a K-12 public school and a teacher education facility. The heaven part of the project awaits. That will only arrive with the project's payoff, which includes a significant economic development impact. ABOVE RIGHT: The project's entrance, as depicted in an artist's rendering.

NIH Funds Botanical Center in Iowa to Study Health Effects of Echinacea and St. John's Wort The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), components of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), today announced a 5-year, $6 million grant for the establishment of a research center based in Ames, Iowa to study two botanical dietary supplement ingredients, Echinacea and Hypericum (St. John's wort). Echinacea is reputed to ward off colds and other infections, while St. John's wort is purported to combat mild depression. The new Center for Dietary Supplement Research brings together two traditionally strong research institutions, Iowa State University in Ames and the University of Iowa in Iowa City. The Center Director, Diane F. Birt, Ph.D., chairs the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Iowa State University and is an expert in nutrition and its relation to disease. Other Center scientists have expertise in toxicology, medicinal pharmacology, clinical medicine, epidemiology, nutrition, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, botany, horticulture and statistics. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, (one of the National Institutes of Health), is the principal federal agency for research and training on the effects of environmental agents on human health. It is the only one of the institutes not headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, and is in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. The mission of NIEHS is to develop knowledge that will permit the better management of risks associated with body exposures to or processing of environmental factors or agents. Within this mission, the NIEHS supports research, including relevant nutrition and dietary supplement research, investigating the effects of chemical, physical and biological environmental agents on human health and well-being. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates secondhand smoke to be responsible for 35,000 heart disease deaths per year, a number likely to rise as data is re-evaluated. Big Tobacco has been dealt a severe blow by the CDC, which now recommends the avoidance of indoor smoking for those at risk of heart disease. In making this recommendation, the CDC cites a 2002 study conducted in Helena, Mont. The number of heart attacks dropped substantially during the city's 6-month smoking ban. When the ban was struck down in court, heart attacks ascended to pre-ban levels.

Contact Us SECTIONS : REGIONAL NEWS Study finds more asthma in children living on hog farms Tuesday, October 14, 2003 IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) A new University of Iowa study says children who live on hog farms in Keokuk County have a much higher incidence of asthma than those who live elsewhere. Raising hogs posed the highest apparent asthma risk to the children studied, said the University of Iowa's Peter Thorne, one of the lead researchers. Approximately 16 percent of Keokuk County children have asthma or have taken medicine for wheezing in the past year. That's far higher than the 7 percent statewide rate reported in the state's Healthy Iowans 2010 report. Many people avoid a diagnosis because they fear a stigma or possible problems getting on sports teams, so the disease is underreported, Thorne said. Keokuk County's asthma rate is triple the national average of about 5 percent, he added. The 347 children in the study who lived on properties with no hogs had an asthma rate of 13.5 percent. But 21 percent of the 71 children on farms with up to 100 hogs had asthma. Among the 69 children on farms with more than 100 hogs, the asthma rate was 24.6 percent. The size of the farms ranged to approximately 5,000 hogs.

Contact Us SECTIONS : REGIONAL NEWS Northern Iowa regional news and notes Tuesday, December 9, 2003 Ethanol plant needs $800,000 water main MASON CITY, Iowa An ethanol plant under construction in this north-central Iowa city will need an $800,000 water main to get it up and running, officials said. The water main for the Golden Grain Energy plant could initially be financed through the city's water fund, said City Administrator Tim Moerman. "Golden Grain analyzed the cost for providing water for these two uses and determined the most cost-effective way was for the city to provide the water through a water main," Moerman said. Under the proposed plan, the city's cost would be offset by Golden Grain agreeing to pay $40,000 a year for tapping into the city's water system. The plan also calls for the city to approve a 10-year tax rebate on property taxes. The plant will use about 250 gallons of water a minute to process grain into the renewable fuel when it opens in early 2005, Moerman said.
